  • Maiduguri: City Scoping Study
MAIDUGURI: CITY SCOPING STUDY By Marissa Bell and Katja Starc Card (IRC) June 2021 MAIDUGURI: CITY SCOPING STUDY 2 Maiduguri is the largest city in north east Nigeria and the capital of Borno State, which suffers from endemic poverty, and capacity and legitimacy gaps in terms of its governance. The state has been severely affected by the Boko Haram insurgency and the resulting insecurity has led to economic stagnation in Maiduguri. The city has borne the largest burden of support to those displaced by the conflict. The population influx has exacerbated vulnerabilities that existed in the city before the security and displacement crisis, including weak capacities of local governments, poor service provision and high youth unemployment. The Boko Haram insurgency appears to be attempting to fill this gap in governance and service delivery. By exploiting high levels of youth unemployment Boko Haram is strengthening its grip around Maiduguri and perpetuating instability. Maiduguri also faces severe environmental challenges as it is located in the Lake Chad region, where the effects of climate change increasingly manifesting through drought and desertification. Limited access to water and poor water quality is a serious issue in Maiduguri’s vulnerable neighborhoods. A paucity of drains and clogging leads to annual flooding in the wet season. As the population of Maiduguri has grown, many poor households have been forced to take housing in flood-prone areas along drainages due to increased rent prices in other parts of the city. URBAN CONTEXT Maiduguri is the oldest town in north eastern Nigeria and has long served as a commercial centre with links to Niger, Cameroon and Chad and to nomadic communities in the Sahara.

The art tradition is however preponderant in a few Yoruba towns to the extent that the names of these towns are traditionally inseparable with the Adire art tradition. With Western education, introduction of foreign religions, influence from other cultures, technique and technology, there is a shift in the producers of Adire, the training pattern, and even an evolution in the production centre. While Western education resulted in a shift from the hitherto traditional Copyright© IAARR 2013: www.afrrevjo.net 350 Indexed African Journals Online: www.ajol.info Vol. 7 (2) Serial No. 29, April, 2013 Pp.350-370 apprenticeship method to the study of the art in schools, unemployment gave birth to the introduction of training drives by government and non governmental parastatals. S. and Ogunjemite, B. G. Department of Ecotourism and Wildlife Management, Federal University of Technology, Akure. Corresponding Author email: [email protected] ABSTRACT The distribution of large mammals in Idanre Forest Reserve was assessed using the line transect method with a total number of five (5) transect lines and employing the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) to take the different points and location of different species of large mammals both sighted directly and indirectly. It was observed that transect C and D (within the undisturbed forest) 45 and 38 sightings respectively which were evenly distributed within this transects. It was also observed that transect C had 30.41 % the highest rate occurrence in terms of distribution of signs of large mammals. The study also revealed that in terms of vegetation cover preference, all of the large mammals were distributed with the undisturbed forest habitat while the Cephalophus silvicultor were not distributed within the disturbed forest and the farm land .Also, all the primates were available within all the habitat types with the exception of Cercocerbus torquatus which is not distributed within the Cercocebus torquatus farmland. The research revealed that there are still some significant amounts of large mammals within the reserve and if well conserved in terms of enforcement of strict adherence to forest laws, there will be an increase in terms of the distribution within their natural habitat and reduced dispersal outside their natural place of abode.

The study identified most of all the known rivers in Imo State and provided information like relief, topography and other geographical features of the major rivers which are crucial to aid water management for a sustainable water infrastructure in the communities of the watershed. The rivers and lakes are classified into five watersheds (river basins) such as Okigwe watershed, Mbaise / Mbano watershed, Orlu watershed, Oguta watershed and finally, Owerri watershed. The knowledge of the river basins in Imo State will help analyze the problems involved in water resources allocation and to provide guidance for the planning and management of water resources in the state for sustainable development. Keywords: Rivers; Basins/Watersheds; Water allocation; • What minimum reservoir capacity will be sufficient to assure Sustainability adequate water for irrigation or municipal water supply, during droughts? Introduction • How much quantity of water will become available at a reservoir An understanding of the hydrology of a region or state is paramount site, and when will it become available? • Assessing the Impact of Soil Erosion on Residential Areas of Efon-Alaaye Ekiti, Ekiti-State, Nigeria
International Journal of Environmental Planning and Management Vol. 5, No. 1, 2019, pp. 23-31 http://www.aiscience.org/journal/ijepm ISSN: 2381-7240 (Print); ISSN: 2381-7259 (Online) Assessing the Impact of Soil Erosion on Residential Areas of Efon-Alaaye Ekiti, Ekiti-State, Nigeria Olusa Adekemi Opeyemi 1, *, Faturoti Helen Abidemi 2, Otokiti Kolade Victor 3 Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria Abstract Soil erosion is a persistent process that continues relatively unnoticed, or at an alarming rate causing serious threats to soil. About 84% of the global land loss has been attributed to erosion. Accordingly, erosion is one of the most significant environmental problems worldwide. In this paper, Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) were used to assess the impact of soil erosion on residential areas of Efon-Alaayee Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria. Soil erodability, slope, land cover and support practice factors were the variables used to investigate the impact of soil erosion in the study area. As an output, a soil loss map was developed and the total land area at risk of being lost to erosion was estimated from the analysis. The soil loss map was calculated to be between 0 to > 756.60 tons per hectare (31.9 sq.km) in a year. The soil map was classified into four categories based on erosion risk classes, namely: slight, moderate, high and very high. The result indicates that 21.8 sq.km area is under slight class, 6.5 sq.km area is under moderate class, 2.7 sq.km is under high class while, 0.54km sq.km area is under very high class.
