National Population and Housing Census 2011 (National Report)

Volume 01, NPHC 2011 National Population and Housing Census 2011 (National Report) Government of Nepal National Planning Commission Secretariat Central Bureau of Statistics Kathmandu, Nepal November, 2012 Acknowledgement National Population and Housing Census 2011 (NPHC2011) marks hundred years in the history of population census in Nepal. Nepal has been conducting population censuses almost decennially and the census 2011 is the eleventh one. It is a great pleasure for the government of Nepal to successfully conduct the census amid political transition. The census 2011 has been historical event in many ways. It has successfully applied an ambitious questionnaire through which numerous demographic, social and economic information have been collected. Census workforce has been ever more inclusive with more than forty percent female interviewers, caste/ethnicities and backward classes being participated in the census process. Most financial resources and expertise used for the census were national. Nevertheless, important catalytic inputs were provided by UNFPA, UNWOMEN, UNDP, DANIDA, US Census Bureau etc. The census 2011 has once again proved that Nepal has capacity to undertake such a huge statistical operation with quality. The professional competency of the staff of the CBS has been remarkable. On this occasion, I would like to congratulate Central Bureau of Statistics and the CBS team led by Mr.Uttam Narayan Malla, Director General of the Bureau. On behalf of the Secretariat, I would like to thank the Steering Committee of the National Population and Housing census 2011 headed by Honorable Vice-Chair of the National Planning commission. Also, thanks are due to the Members of various technical committees, working groups and consultants.

Characterization and Quantification of Municipal Solid Waste in Jeetpur Simara Sub- Metropolitan City, Nepal

Characterization and Quantification of Municipal Solid Waste in Jeetpur Simara Sub- Metropolitan City, Nepal Bikash Adhikari and Yubraj Dahal Bikash Adhikari Yubraj Dahal Abstract: Waste management, being one of the most important aspects of urban development, is gaining importance among developing nation like Nepal where rapid population growth, unmanaged urbanization, lack of public awareness and poor management by municipalities have intensified environmental problems in towns in Nepal. In Nepal only six municipalities i.e. Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Pokhara, Dhankuta, Tansen and Ghorahi practice sanitary landfill for waste management and other municipality practices open dumping which has become major cause of environmental and human health hazards (ADB, 2013). Jeetpur Simara Sub-Metropolitan City (JSSMC) is a recently formed sub-metropolitan city. This city has not performed any study on solid waste management till date and lacks data on quantity and composition of municipal solid waste generation that facilitates effective planning of municipal solid waste management. The household survey revealed an average per capita household waste generation rate of 120 g/capita/day. The total Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) generation is estimated about 15 tons/day and 5475 tons/year. The analysis of household waste composition indicated that the highest waste category was organic waste with 80% followed by plastics with 10%, paper and paper products with 6% and inert with 4%. The composition analysis of institutional wastes revealed 41% paper and paper products, 33% plastics, 13% organic wastes and 13% inert. The study found that commercial waste comprised 59% paper and paper products, 21% plastics, 17% organic and 3% inert. In aggregate, MSW is composed of 56% organic waste, 21% paper and paper products, 19% plastics, and 3% inert.

Noise Level Status in Siddharthanagar Municipality, Rupandehi, Nepal

Noise Level Status in Siddharthanagar Municipality, Rupandehi, Nepal Lakshmi Nath Bhattarai Department of Physics, Butwal Multiple Campus, Nepal e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Undesirable sound for human hearing is called as noise. It was measured at the selected locations of silent, residential and commercial zones of Siddharthanagar Municipality by using Dick Smith Digital Sound Level Meter Q 1362 for ‘A’ weighting in day time at 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM in the month of November and December 2012. The result shows that at each location the Leq noise levels are above than the noise level standard prescribed by Government of Nepal and WHO. Maximum Leq of 81.9 dB(A) was observed at the Bus park of commercial area and minimum 54.5 dB(A) was observed at Medical College area of silent zone. In other places, the Leq lie in the range 56.2 dB(A) to 81.9 dB(A). The study showed that the places lying along highways have high level of noise which is due to bad condition of roads, vehicles and unnecessary use of horns. Keywords: Noise pollution, decibel, Noise level, Silent zone, Commercial zone. 1. INTRODUCTION etc. have been observed due to effect of noise Sound that is undesirable for human hearing is pollution. called as noise.
