HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS THE CITY OF HUNTSVILLE

Huntsville is located on the crest of the water shed separating the Trinity and San Jacinto rivers. Its history is closely related to the history of the state itself. Before the white men began to settle the south west, the Indians favored the site now occupied by the city. The Indians used this site as a trading post and their well beaten trails led the Anglo-Saxon settlers to the land of many springs.

When the Mexican Government began issuing land grants to settlers in 1835? Pleasand Gray received the title to the section of land where Huntsville is now located. He did not name the location until after he' had established a trading post on what is now the town

square. When he saw that other settlers were beginning to form a small community, he chose to call his settlement

Huntsville after his old hometown in Alabama.

The small trading post town began to grow, but it was not chartered as a city until Texas became a republic.

The charter is dated January 3O5 18^-5.

Sam Houston, Texas' most colorful adopted son, chose

Huntsville as his home when he first came to Texas. His

influence on the growth of the community and the state is

legend. Today, his homesite is a shrine and visited by

thousands every year. Both of his original homes have been restored, A museum where relics of his era are carefully preserved is maintained for posterity.

Even before the establishment of the college named for Sam Houston, Huntsville has been known far and wide as a seat of education. The first educational institutions in Huntsville were academies, first one for men and later a women's academy, both established by the original settlers in the 18^0 's. Later Austin College, a Presbyterian school, was established, built the first endurable structure, then removed to Sherman, Texas, where it is still going strong. Upon the foundation laid by Austin College, the

Texas Legislature built a stronger edifice of educational strength, Sam Houston Normal, chartered in 1879.

Not only is Huntsville noted for its heritage and educational institutions, but also for the penal colony located in the city. The penal colony was established shortly before the Civil War when it was used to house prisoners of war. It has grown both in size and sitature.

For years sociologists from all over the world have visited the State Penitentiary to study the progressive methods of rehabilitation that have proved so effective under the guidance of such men as the late 0, B. Ellis.

Today, Huntsville is a throbbing city of more than

10,000. Its fine supply of pure artesian water, its excellent natural drainage, and its mild climate have attracted many people and businesses. There are over

260 retail stores and service businesses employing upwards of 1500 people. Huntsville is serviced by the major newspapers in

Texas, but is most boastful of the fact that the Huntsville

Item is the one newspaper in Texas with the longest con tinuous service.

Mindful of their rich heritage which fosters responsibility, the citizens of Huntsville have never been known to shirk their duty. They have been working continually to promote more and better facilities for all its future generations. SAM HOUSTON STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE

A Texas Tradition in Education

SAM HOUSTON STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE

Huntsville, Texas HISTORY AND PURPOSE OF SAM HOUSTON STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE

Sam Houston State Teachers College, located In Hunts ville, has a history which is a vital part of the development of the State of Texas. The legislative act creating Sam

Houston Normal Institute, the first teacher-training institution in Texas, was signed by Governor 0. M. Roberts on April 21,

1879.

In order to meet advancing standards of the public schools, the curriculum was extended in 19l8 by the Board of Regents to Include four years of college work; the faculty was increased and strengthened and additions were made to library and laboratory equipment, thus transforming the

Institution into a standard four-year college for teachers with authority to confer the bachelor's degree.

Five years later the legislature changed the names of the normal schools of Texas to State Teachers Colleges. The

Sam Houston Normal Institute became the Sam Houston State

Teachers College.

In 1925 Sam Houston State Teachers College was admitted to membership In the Southern Association of Colleges and

Secondary Schools, and in 1936 the college was authorized to offer graduate courses leading to the master's degree.

Sam Houston State Teachers College was established and presently exists to train teachers for the public schools of

Texas. In order to accomplish this end, the college offers instruction in all aspects of teaching snd administration of all the grades, high school, and junior college. As new subjects and areas of instruction are added to the curricula of the Texas Public schools, the college makes special effort to prepare teachers for those subjects.

In addition, the college offers courses leading to Liberal

Arts Degrees and courses required for entrance to professional schools of medicine, law, engineering, dentistry, and other professions. Five years of standard college work are offered in such special subjects as music, art, commercial branches, vocational home economics, industrial arts, vocational agri culture, physical education and the graphic arts.

Credits from Sam Houston State Teachers College are accepted in all standard colleges of the nation. The college is a member of the Association of Texas Colleges, the Southern

Association of Colleges, the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, and the American Association of

University Women.

Sam Houston State Teachers College today enjoys the advantages of having one of the fine st physical plants and

campuses in Texas. The instructional buildings and dormitories, except one, are competely air-conditioned. Many new buildings have been erected to meet the needs of a rapidly growing stu dent body. Improved facilities for all areas of instruction

are constantly being added. As one of the oldest state-

supported teacher training institutions west of the Mississippi, the college looks forward condidently to the bright promise of the future. Buildings that comprise the Sam Houston campus are:

SAM HOUSTON STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE

Huntsville, Texas THE HISTORY OP THE BUSINESS DEPARTMENT

In 1925> the Sam Houston State Teachers College was

admitted to membership in the Southern Association of Colleges

and Secondary Schools. It was also in 1925 that the first

student majoring in Business Administration was graduated

from Sam Houston State Teachers College.

During the following twenty-five years the Business

Department made tremendous progress in both enrollment and

in its course offerings.

Prom 1925 to 1933 there was a gradual increase in

enrollment. In 192^ there were twenty-four courses offered

in the curriculum. Among those courses were the following

which have not been offered since that year in the Business

Department: "Teaching of Penmanship," "College Annual,"

"Business English," and "Penmanship Drills." In 1928, for

the first time, the Department offered five courses by corre

spondence. These five courses were: "Contracts and Agency,"

"Sales and Negotiable Instruments and Bailments," "Partner

ships and Corporations," and "Business Correspondence."

The next significant period in the history of the development of the department came in the years 193^ to

number 19^0, The of courses offered during these years increased. In 193^, there were fourteen (1^) courses offered and in 19^0, there were thirty-six (36).

In 19^8 there was a sharp increase in the number of students graduated, the number being seventy-three (73).

as far as the The year 19'4-9 represented the peak year number graduated during the twenty-five years of development is concerned. In 1950 there was a slight decrease in the number of students graduated, but the number: of courses offered increased. The peak year, as far as courses offered is concerned, was 1950.

Today, the business department has surpassed the growth in enrollment of the college proportionately.

It is now the largest department on the campus, with 1961 enrollment being 1,053, The department has twelve full- time and ten part-time faculty members.

The business department now offers majors in

accounting, business education, general business and

secretarial science. ninniniKiitiintfii DELTA SIGMA BUSINESS CLUB

SAM HOUSTON STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE

Huntsville, Texas BRIEF HISTORY OP DELTA SIGMA

Delta Sigma, a professional business adm^inistration club, was founded on November 18, 1961 to reolace the existing B. A,. Club. This new or.sanization was formed by a group of thirty undergraduate students who were brought together by Dr, Jean D, Neal, head of the Bus

iness Administration Department, This club was organ

ized specifically for the purpose of seeking affiliation with the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi,

The club was immediately recognized by the school

and help and assistance was offered by the administration.

Our sched.ule calls for a meeting of the club every

Thursday night. The meetings during the f'all semester were devoted to organization, promotion, and administra

tion. During the spring semester a speaker will be pre

sented at every other meeting, and on interveinlng nights

a business will be held.

Sam Houston is located close enough to Houston,

and Waco to us an Dallas, Pt . Worth, give unlimited

supply of successful businessmen from which to choose

our sioeakers. We have lined up several men from the

Banking, Insurance, and Investraents fields for this sem

ester.

There are two events Dlanned for this semester which nlan to be outstanding. The first will be a field trip

to the o-f^'f^ices of Hutton Investment Counselors in Houston on March 16, We will leave from Sam Houston at eight o' clock in the morning and. be in Hutton' s offices about

ten o' clock, .After this tour we will have lunch, and

then take a trip down the Houston Ship Channel on the

Port of Houston's Yacht, We feel that this will be an

educational and entertaining trip for all.

The second event will be the Delta Sigma spring picnic, which we plan to present annually. This will be

ooen to all students of business and their dates. Tickets will be sold bv the members of the Delta Sigma Club, We

plan to use this picnic as a fund raising project for the

coming years.

New offices will be elected during this semester to

replace the ones to be graduated. We feel that these

officers should be elected sometime before the end of the

sem.ester, so they can be trained by the officers they are

replacing.

This semester promises to be an interestin.g and ex

citing one for all of our members. #LlP^ . J %'-^l^ I^H kiJ^^^^^^^^^^^p^? j^^^^i^c***"' '^ mt ^^\s r^p W A s^ Xj^ Name: F, Giffert Alstrin Age : 27

OrFICE OF THE PRESIDENT March 5, 1962

Mr. Charles L. Farrar Executive Secretary Intemationel Fraternity Delta Sigma Pi 330 South Cenrpus Avenue Oxford, Ohio

Dear Mr. Farrar:

I am -writing this letter in support of Delta Signa's petition to become a chapter of Delta Sigjaa Pi. Delta Si^a is a local organisation in the Department of Business AdBiinistra.tion s.t Sam Houston State Teachers College.

I am vitally interested in the welfare of the students at this college, and I am anxious to support anything which I "believe to he of value to this college and its students. Many national organizations have established chapters on our csaapus, and I feel that the affiliation with these organizations strengthens the work of the students snd improves scholarship.

Sam Houston State Teachers College enrolled 5? 0^5 students this past fall. The Department of Business Administration is "by far the largest department on our campus. There are 1,022 students majoring in business admlnistrstion and 2,277 students enrolled in business aximlnistration courses. I think that the affiliation with Delta Sigma Pi would give this department the prestige which it needs to continue to grow and paragi^ss.

I sincerely hope that you -will look with favor upon this petition.

Respectfully yours. /i^X Harmon Lowman president Sam llouston btate 1 eachers (jolle^e

Mr. Charles L. Farrar Executive Secretary International Fratemity Delta Sigma Pi 330 South Campus Ave. Oxford, Ohio

Dear Mr. Farrar:

The Administration of Sam Houston State Teachers College has of ficially approved Delta Sigma, a professional organization in the Department of Business Administration, as an official campus or ganization. The men in this organization have maintained a scho lastic rating much above the all college average. I feel that in the near future they can and will excell their present standing.

The Department of Business Administration on our campus is one of our largest departments. It has more than one thousand majors. Its graduates have been highly successful and are located in big businesses through the state. We have many other professional or ganizations on our campus. We feel that our Business Administra tion Department would profit by affiliating with a national order like Delta Sigma Pi.
