iVEC Internship Program 2010-2011

iVEC, the hub of advanced computing in WA, is searching for students who are ready to challenge themselves through their student internship program. They will provide access to high performance computing, visualisation and rendering facilities, large-scale data storage and high speed communications - and expert help to make best use of technology. Researchers at iVEC member institutions have submitted an impressive array of projects for students to work on. The Internship program includes an intensive induction week to help students understand eResearch: data management, high performance computing, visualisation and collaborative tools and their impact on research now and in the future.

Eligibility Requirements & Award Conditions

1. Applicants must be undergraduate students - 3rd year and above, including honours students. 2. Internships will run for approximately 10 weeks during the period December 2010 through February 2011, although dates and exact length of the internship are negotiable. 3. The award is for up to $6,000 per student, depending on the length of the project. 4. Awards are fully funded by iVEC and its partners. 5. Interns must be studying at a Western Australian educational institution and not have held an iVEC Internship in the past. 6. Projects can come from any research field. At least one of the supervisors must be a staff member from an iVEC Partner or Facility:

 Partners: CSIRO, , , , University of Western 7. Students must discuss the project with the supervisor before nominating on their application. 8. The internship is a student award and is paid directly to the student via the partners' scholarship/payroll offices. 9. There will be a mandatory one-week induction from 29th November to 3rd December 2010. 10. Interns will write a final report, generate a podcast describing their work and give an oral presentation at the completion of the internship.

Selection: The selection committee will meet in the week following the deadline to determine the distribution of awards. Evaluation and selection will be based on:

1. Student qualification and past performance 2. Student motivation and expected benefit
