M Ahmed [email protected], +86-029-85303259 [email protected], +86-15502930730 School of Education, Shaanxi Normal University, Xi’an, China, 710062 ABSTRACT In this chapter, we focus on systems thinking. A system is a group of interacting, interrelated, and interdependent components that form a complex and unified whole. Systems thinking is a way of understanding reality that emphasizes the relationships among a system's parts that goes beyond the parts themselves. We first provide brief professional profiles for three of the most relevant theorists: Ludwig von Bertalanffy, Peter Senge, and Donella Meallows. Secondly, we describe the primary issues of systems thinking and explain why this is an important theory. We have also included historical and theoretical background and relevant references. Thirdly, we make connections of the theory to science teaching and learning. We stated some advantages and challenges of systems thinking in relation to science education and related the theory to current teaching practices, and actual classroom applications. We have also provided examples of modeling practices, ideas, and programs. Lastly, we made references to major curricula currently in use such as the Next Generation Science Standards in the USA and 2015 PISA framework. We argue that we might need to have substantial changes in our existing science curriculum in order to encompass systems thinking and the new trends in science education like the STEM movement. -

American Journal of Business Education – March 2011 Volume 4, Number 3 Systems Thinking Evidence From Colleges Of Business And Their Universities John H. Seiler, Rutgers University Mini-MBA Program, USA Michelle Kowalsky, William Paterson University, USA ABSTRACT This study investigated instances of the term “systems thinking” among the websites of the Top 25 business schools as ranked by U. S. News and World Report in 2010. Since a greater number of instances of the term and its variants in a university’s web documents may indicate an increased interest of the institution in the concept of systems thinking, the universities in this study were rated according to their decreasing instances, counts, or website “hits.” Results indicated that while many schools had little to no mention of the term in any form, some schools used it prolifically on their websites, even when searching and hit counting was adjusted to remove duplicates and isolate inaccurate results. Nevertheless, appearance and discussion of the term was limited in official university information displayed by most schools. The authors assert that an increasing importance should be placed on teaching systems thinking at the graduate level and on providing evidence of this work to prospective business students and their prospective employers through university and business school websites. With the recent economic downturn of 2008, the business world more than S ever needs to employ leaders who have the ability to see their companies and industries as living organisms.
