■ DEFENSIVE MIDFIELD Porter Wilkinson led the Carolina defense from her midfielder position last year, earning first-team All-America honors, and should do the same again this season as a junior. She is one of UNC’s tri-captains, along with McPike and Nicole Foran, and will again mark the opposing team’s best offensive players. Wilkinson has started 31 of Carolina’s 33 games over her two seasons in Chapel Hill. “Porter has an interesting year ahead of her,” Slingluff Levy says. “She was a first-team All-America as a sophomore, but she can’t get weighted down with expectations. Her strengths are her speed, her intelligence and her position defense. She’ll be a leader this year. There are a lot of expectations on her shoulders, but I’m confident she will work harder and continue to improve.” Foran appeared in 17 of 18 games in 2000, starting 10 after seeing lim- ited action in her first two seasons. “Nicole Foran she’s got the experience and talent defensively, ” Slingluff Levy says. “She’s gotten better over the course of her career, and we need her to continue to do so.”

■ DEFENSE The Tar Heels lost two experienced starters from their 2000 defense in the athletic Meghan Stringer and the savvy Jennie Voishan. Kate McDaniel and Andy Fortino were part-time starters last year who will see more extensive playing time this season. Redshirt freshman Meghan Melissa Coyne
