The celebration dinner will be held on November 13, 2015, at the Community and Cultural Center. Yvonne has been the Friends newsletter editor for the past five years, creating appealing and colorful layouts. She also designs all the flyers for book sales and other events. She works a regular shift in the Friends bookstore and helps with every book sale. When the Friends were fundraising for a new library, she served on the Beyond Books Campaign steering committee and coordinated the ground breaking celebration in May 2006. (Remember bringing shovels to help dig, the treasure hunt, and Fabulous Flappers?) She was on the planning committee for the library grand opening in July 2007 and was a hit at the event wearing angel wings. A year later, she helped organize the library’s First Birthday Party and was in charge of the Fifth Birthday celebration. She has served as Friends vice president and secretary, was responsible for the Friends/Library booth at the Taste of Morgan Hill, and continues to pitch in whenever needed. Finally, she has demonstrated her commitment to our organization by becoming Lifetime Member of the Friends. Yvonne is also actively involved with AAUW Morgan Hill Branch. She is newsletter layout editor, designs program flyers, and was Wildflower Run Director for three years. We are grateful to Yvonne and honor her as the Friends’ Outstanding Volunteer. 2 Saturday, 10 am - 3 pm All books $1 or less Children’s books only 10¢ Many Cookbooks Bag Sale from 2 - 3 pm $5 including reusable library bag $4 if you bring your own bag Members Only Preview Saturday, October 10, 9 - 10 am (before sale opens to the public, memberships available at the door) Save the date: February 6, 2016, next book sale. 3 Peggy’s Pages Peggy Tomasso, librarian, [email protected] Ten Reasons to Have a Library Card In celebration of National Friends of Libraries week, I wanted to share a 1. They keep our bookstore open about 40 hours a week, nearly 170 hours a month. Some work as cashiers, others stock the store, and several sort book donations that sometimes fill the sort room to overflowing. There are volunteers who help at our Big Sales, help with special events, or do the work that keeps our organization running. And some seem to do all of these jobs! Yvonne Duckett is one of these and well deserves the Philanthropy Volunteer award from the Friends. Another special person is Roberta Henderson, who spends countless hours handling online sales, literally doing everything herself, including daily trips to the post office. Although we have many volunteers, more are always needed, especially for the bookstore. Sometimes our regular workers go out of town, need surgery, move out of the area, have family emergencies or other obligations and can no longer serve. We currently have a couple of openings for cashiers, if you would like to work a regular shift: 2nd and 4th Thursdays, 10 am -- 1pm. 3rd Wednesday, 10 am – 1 pm Plus, we can always use more subs. If you are interested in joining our wonderful group of volunteers in any capacity, please contact me at [email protected]. Is it time for you to get more involved? FMHL Finances Our FMHL Bookstore has had a good summer, averaging $650 per week. For the year to date, bookstore, big sales, and online sales have brought in more than $33,000. The support of members and the community at our sales enable us to fund library programs, activities, and needed furnishings.
