"We control it on our end, and now it's up to you" -- Exploitation, Empowerment, and Ethical Portrayals of the Pornography Industry Abstract Documentaries about pornography are beginning to constitute an entirely new subgenre of film. Big Hollywood names like James Franco and Rashida Jones are jumping on the bandwagon, using their influence and resources to invest in a type of audiovisual knowledge production far less mainstream than that in which they usually participate. The films that have resulted from this new movement are undoubtedly persuasive, no matter which side of the debate over pornography these directors have respectively chosen to represent. Moreover, regardless of the side(s) that audience members may have taken in the so-called “feminist porn debates,” one cannot ignore the rhetorical strength of the arguments presented in a wide variety of documentaries about pornography. -

Artrip ABSTRACT (academic) This dissertation is a theoretical study of the role of virality/virulence as a predominant technological term in the reproduction of social and cultural information in the digital age. I argue that viral media are not new phenomena, only the name is new. Media have always behaved as viruses; it is only when they become hyper-intensified in digital technology that their virulent function surfaces in language and culture. The project examines processes of self-replication and evolution undergone by various new media phenomena as they relate back to the global profusion of social networks, data centers, and cybernetic practices. Drawing from several contributions in media theory, political and social theory, and critical media studies, I argue that digital media have a hyper-intensifying effect on whatever objects, subjects, or realities they mediate or represent; thus networked societies are virulently swarmed by their own signs and images in information. Through an examination of three primary categories of digital proliferation—language, visuality, and sexuality—I situate digital culture in a framework of virulence, arguing that the digital may be best understood as an effect of cultural hyper-saturation and implosion. -

Voices of Feminism Oral History Project Sophia Smith Collection, Smith College Northampton, MA AMBER HOLLIBAUGH Interviewed by KELLY ANDERSON December 15 and 16, 2003, January 20, 2004 New York, New York This interview was made possible with generous support from the Ford Foundation. © Sophia Smith Collection 2004 Narrator Amber Lynne Hollibaugh (b.1946), a “lesbian sex radical, ex-hooker, incest survivor, Gypsy child, poor-white-trash, high femme dyke,” grew up in a mixed-race, working-class family near Bakersfield, California. Hollibaugh’s movement politics date back to Freedom Summer in 1964 and she’s been a fulltime movement activist—whether New Left, feminist, or queer—ever since. For the past two decades, Hollibaugh has been at the center of feminist debate over sexuality and a leader in the fight against AIDS. She was the founding director of the Lesbian AIDS Project at the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, the first project of its kind in the nation, and produced an award- winning documentary on women living with AIDS, Heart of the Matter (1994). She is the author of My Dangerous Desires: A Queer Girl Dreaming Her Way Home (2000) and is currently the senior strategist with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Interviewer Kelly Anderson is an educator, historian, and community activist. She has an M.A. in women’s history from Sarah Lawrence College and is a Ph.D. candidate in U.S. History at the CUNY Graduate Center. 10 March 2016 Senate Standing Committees on Environment and Communications Harm being done to Australian children through access to pornography on the Internet Written submission prepared by: Dr Meagan Tyler Vice-Chancellor’s Research Fellow RMIT University, Melbourne Thank you for the opportunity to submit to this inquiry. I have been involved in researching pornography, the pornography industry, and violence against women for the last ten years. In this time, I have published numerous journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters on these topics and am now an internationally recognised scholar in the fields of gender inequality and sexuality. There are several reasons why I wish to submit evidence to this inquiry and they all fall under ‘any other related matters’ in the terms of reference. A summary of these points is below, followed by a more thorough explanation with relevant citations. Summary • The increasing consumption, and the acceptability of the consumption, of pornography in the West marks a significant cultural shift in sexual attitudes and behaviours. • Although the impact of this shift is debated by experts in the field, there is general agreement that some level of ‘pornographication’ is occurring. In other words, pornography is becoming more mainstream and a largely accepted part of popular culture in places like Australia. • It has become apparent through a variety of academic studies that even mainstream commercial pornography now frequently includes violent and degrading practices and these are most commonly committed against women. • Therefore, we must consider ‘pornographication’ as mainstreaming the eroticisation of violence against women and gender inequality. • We cannot separate children’s exposure to pornography from this culture of ‘pornographication’ in which it is increasingly acceptable to consume images of eroticised inequality and violence. -

Seven hundred million porn videos or DVDs are rented each year. This is a mind-boggling figure. Pornography revenues, which can broadly be construed to include magazines, websites, cable, in-room hotel movies, and sex toys, total between 10 and 14 billion dollars annually. This figure as New York Times critic Frank Rich has noted, is not only bigger than movie revenues, it is bigger than professional football, basketball and baseball put together. -

Pleasure, pain and pornography: A gendered analysis of the influence of contemporary pornography on the lives of New Zealand emerging adults By Samantha Maree Keene A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Criminology Social and Cultural Studies Victoria University of Wellington 2019 i ii Abstract Historically, concerns have been raised about violence in pornography and the influence that such portrayals may have on levels of violence against women and children. Today, pornography is pervasively available on the internet and viewed by both men and women in ever-increasing numbers. In New Zealand, violence against women and children remains at alarmingly high levels, and concerns about pornography’s influence on gendered violence are a common refrain. Research remains inconclusive about the impacts of pornography on viewers’ sexual scripts, behaviours and attitudes, yet the voices of those most affected by pornography – viewers and their partners – are often omitted from pornography studies. Few New Zealand studies employ a gendered analysis of men’s and women’s experiences with pornography. To provide research specific to New Zealand about these experiences, this thesis explores the reported influences of mainstream pornography on the lives of a self-selecting sample of (primarily) heterosexual New Zealanders between the ages of 18 and 30. It adopts a uniquely gendered analysis and critically interrogates both men’s and women’s experiences with pornography in the digital age. The findings of this research suggest that pornography research necessitates a gendered appraisal both in terms of how pornography is experienced individually, but also within intimate relationships. -

WHITNEY STRUB Sanitizing the Seventies Pornography, Home Video, and the Editing of Sexual Memory ABSTRACT During the 1980s US feminist sex wars, pornography edited its own history, leav- ing a distorted record both less problematic and less queer than scholars have yet recognized. Academic inquiry into pornography coincided with home-video boom years, and research often took place in adult backrooms, necessarily because pornography was so poorly archived. Yet even as access has shifted from VHS to digital, the field has yet to reckon with how its interpre- tive frameworks were shaped by a material history in which the films that scholars watched were often altered from the versions patrons had seen in theaters. Gone from both straight and gay films were many transgressive sex acts that had frequently been staples of the genre, affecting the perceived oeuvre of nearly every hardcore filmmaker of the era. This article recov- ers the lost history of sexual media editing, arguing for a more carefully historicized interro- gation of the commercial sources of our porn archives. Few noticed and no official archives recorded or preserved this change, but the interpretive stakes were, and remain, high. Scenes disappeared, and with them the social meanings of texts, resulting in a disconnect between embodied histori- cal experiences and the later textual interpretations of those works. The pornog- raphy industry sanitized its s iterations, leaving a distorted record that narrowed the scope of its erotic imaginary in ways that left it both less misogy- nistic and less expansive, a triumph of the banal and the genital that necessitates intervention, since the “porno chic” that scholars have inherited is in large part an industrial memory production of the sands, as pornography’shis- tory was quietly disciplined and revised over the course of its various platform adaptations.
