There is a degree of mystery and uncertainty about just what goes on behind the studio door. Some producers are seen as Svengali- like figures manipulating artists into mass consumer product. Producers are sometimes seen as mere technicians whose job is simply to set up a few microphones and press the record button. Close examination of the recording process will show how far this is from a complete picture. Artists are special—they come with an inspiration, and a talent, but also with a variety of complications, and in many ways a recording studio can seem the least likely place for creative expression and for an affective performance to happen. The task of the record producer is to engage with these artists and their songs and turn these potentials into form through the technology of the recording studio. The purpose of the exercise is to disseminate this fixed form to an imagined audience—generally in the hope that this audience will prove to be real.

The LA-2A was originally produced in the early 1960s by Teletronix, which was later acquired by Babcock Electronics Corporation. My father purchased the product rights and the name Teletronix from Babcock Engineering in 1967, folding it into his Studio Electronics Corporation, shortly before he changed the name to UREI. There were three different variations of the LA-2A during this period before production was discontinued around 1969. Straightforward in its design, and initially intended for broadcast applications, the LA-2A quickly became standard equipment in studios worldwide. Many have been painstakingly maintained for the 30 years that they have remained in use since production stopped. A tube-based compressor, the LA-2A features hand-wired components and two simple controls. At the time, its electro-luminescent optical gain reduction was quite revolutionary: applying the audio signal to an electro-luminescent light panel which shines on a photo- electric cell which in turn controls the gain. In contrast to the electro-optical devices which preceded it, the electro-luminescent light source provided the fast attack necessary for broadcast applications. Additionally, the cadmium-sulfide photo-cells provided a very natural “two-stage” release which resulted in a compression characteristic more transparent than the other compressors of its day. To this day the LA-2A delivers a trademark sound treasured by engineers worldwide. Here at Universal Audio, we have gone to great lengths to recreate the LA-2A with complete authenticity.

Sauf volonté délibérée ou choix artistique, le rendu spectral du mixage doit par son rapport à l’oreille de l’auditeur ne rien susciter de « non-naturel », la présence de creux ou de bosses fréquentiels flagrants pour l’oreille est donc à éviter ou à corriger. Thanks for making time for me. David Frangioni: Oh, it's my pleasure, Bryan. Thank you for having me. Great to be here, everyone. Bryan Smith: Yeah, we'll I've done some research on you and your background and, and there is so much to unpack. Your bio is just amazingly eclectic and layered. So, let me start off by just asking you to tell us: What was your calling in terms of finding the drums as your instrument of choice? David Frangioni: You know, I wish I knew. It's, you know, if we go, even before I was born, my, my parents- my dad was in World War II. They got married, right? They met and got married right after that. All they wanted was a family there of Italian descent, and family was everything to them. And it took them almost 20 years of trying to have children. They had my brother, my older brother, by three years, they don't know how or why they could have kids, but they just all of a sudden had my brother; then they had me three years later. And in that process of my being very, very young, like literally a year, a year and a half, somewhere drum showed up around the house. I don't know if it's because I was banging on things and giving them an inkling that that was an interest, or if they brought it to me.

Inspelning av det självständiga, konstnärliga arbetet finns dokumenterat i det tryckta exemplaret av denna text på KMH:s bibliotek. Sammanfattning Bluegrass är en energi- och glädjerik genre som kräver mycket samspel och kommunikation mellan alla musicerande. Detta gör det svårt att fånga genren bra under organiserade inspelningsförhållanden utan att tappa själen i musiken. Syftet med mitt arbete är att undersöka hur olika inspelningssätt, såväl tekniska som miljömässiga, påverkar musiker, instrument, ljud och känsla. Tre olika inspelningar har genomförts, en utomhusinspelning, en inspelning i studiomiljö samt en inspelning under en livekonsert. En mix mellan utomhus- och studioinspelningen skulle med facit i hand varit det allra bästa. Inspelningstekniken och miljön behöver anpassas efter den ensemble som ska spelas in. Allt beror på i vilket sammanhang musikerna känner sig avslappnade och trivs bäst. Det viktigaste som inspelningstekniker och producent är att skapa rätt förutsättningar för musikerna och att inspelningstekniken anpassas efter det sammanhanget.
