  • Descriptive Analysis and Consumer Study of Viognier Wines from Virginia, France and California
Descriptive Analysis and Consumer Study of Viognier Wines from Virginia, France and California Martha Wicks Mueller, Gregory Hirson, Maya Hood White, Jonas Mueller, and Hildegarde Heymann Abstract: A trained panel (n=12) identified the key characteristics of Viognier wines from Virginia, France, and California. Fourteen aroma attributes were identified and assessed: Artificial fruit, chemical, citrus, earthy/dusty/musty, floral, green apple, hay, honey, hot (ethanol), melon/cucumber, stone fruit, sulfidic, tropical fruit, woody, yeasty, and overall product intensity. Six taste and mouth feel attributes were measured: astringent, bitter, hot (ethanol), sour, sweet, and viscosity. Principal component analysis and analysis of variance were used to describe and differentiate among wines and countries. Overall product intensity, artificial fruit, honey, hot, stone fruit, sulfidic, tropical fruit, viscosity, sweet, sour, astringent and hot mouthfeel were all found be significant across wines. When analyzing product versus region, wines from California were found to be significantly greater in overall intensity, stone fruit, artificial fruit and tropical fruit than wines from Virginia and France. French Viogniers were found to be significantly greater in woody than Virginian or Californian Viogniers. Consumer studies in Virginia (n=193) and California (n=109) found a preference for wines high in fruit intensities and higher residual sugar and acidity. Introduction: The European wine grape variety Viognier was on the brink of extinction some forty years ago. The variety had dwindled to only 20 acres in its home, the Northern Rhone Valley, during the late 1960's. It was rediscovered in the ‘New World’ with plantings in Virginia and California in the early 1980’s.

  • Valle Tranquilo Press Release
February 2, 2021 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Loudoun Heights Agritourism Council Releases Collaborative Wine Four Loudoun wineries join together to produce a 2019 estate-grown red blend. Loudoun County, VA (February 1, 2021) – The Loudoun Heights Agritourism Council is committed to telling the story of Northern Loudoun County with the release of its first collaborative wine, the 2019 Valle Tranquilo. This bold red blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Tannat is a full-bodied wine, perfect for enjoying this winter or for cellaring for enjoyment in years to come. Breaux Vineyards, Hillsborough Winery & Brewery, 868 Estate Vineyards, and Two Twisted Posts Winery each brought a barrel of single-varietal, estate-grown wine from their 2019 vintage to Hillsborough Winery where the four winemakers tasted the wines and experimented with different blends to create the 2019 Valle Tranquilo. “What really excites me about this wine is that it represents a coming together of the vineyards in our area. We’ve always been friends, but this is the first time that we have worked together as artistic collaborators,” said Kerem Baki, winemaker and owner at Hillsborough Winery and Brewery. “The resulting wine evokes the terroir of our Loudoun Heights geography, but it also represents the creativity of the entire team. From wine creation to label design, each member of the LHATC was able to contribute to the project. During this difficult COVID year, it has been a bright spot to be able to work with our neighbors on a project like this!” said Nancy Deliso, co-owner, 868 Estate Vineyards. Stephen Mackey, owner of Notaviva Craft Fermentations, designed the label.

  • Loudoun County Cultivates a Fast-Growing Wine Industry Dave
Loudoun County Cultivates a Fast-Growing Wine Industry By Dave McIntyre Special to The Washington Post Wednesday, October 14, 2009 Driving along Tarara Lane, just off U.S. Route 15 north of Leesburg on a recent Saturday, I was distracted from the pastoral view by several signs. One signaled a wedding party to the left, while another heralded a family reunion to the right; a third pointed to a rafting excursion on the Potomac. “There's supposed to be a winery in here somewhere," I muttered, feeling rather bucolicky. Two crowded parking lots later, I found Tarara's tasting room just off a large deck packed with 20- and 30-somethings sipping wine, nibbling cheese and enjoying the cool September air. Jordan Harris, Tarara's young winemaker, bounded from the working winery to greet me. Reeking of sweat and grape must, he wiped his palm on his T-shirt before offering a sticky handshake, his face flushed with the excitement and frenzy of harvest. "We're pressing viognier today," he said. Harris came to Tarara just before the 2007 harvest from Ontario's Niagara wine region and immediately made changes that are bearing fruit in terms of higher quality. But he's just part of a larger story of Loudoun County's wine industry, which in the past six years has more than doubled in size. Loudoun County now boasts 23 wineries, according to the Virginia Wine Board, nearly as many as the Monticello district that encompasses four counties surrounding Charlottesville. All these wineries interspersed with the suburban sprawl of the national capital region have led Loudoun to dub itself "D.C.'s Wine Country." The wineries are more than mere wedding factories or pleasant weekend diversions.

  • Oz Clarke Dazzles Virginia Wine Summit Crowd Trevor Baratko
Oz Clarke dazzles Virginia Wine Summit crowd By Trevor Baratko Loudoun Times Posted: November 6, 2013 Oz Clarke, left, one of the most prominent wine writers in the world, joined Gov. Bob McDonnell, first lady Maureen McDonnell and Virginia Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Todd Haymore, right, at the Virginia Wine Summit in Richmond Oct. 28. Photo Courtesy/Jay Paul and The Virginia Wine Board Marketing Office Virginians often hear Gov. Bob McDonnell and first lady Maureen speaking about the allures of the commonwealth's wine industry, and the fine folks at the state's wine marketing office tout award after award bestowed on Old Dominion vin. Here in Loudoun, we've familiarized ourselves with the “D.C. Wine Country” designation, celebrated it, and we're eager to see what the newly-arrived Epicurience food and wine festival will bring in the future. Yet hearing Oz Clarke, one of the most revered wine writers in the world, gush over Virginia's aromatic viogniers, pepper-smoke cabernet francs and expressive, eclectic blends brings about a new plane of prestige; it's extra rousing coming from a man who became the youngest British Wine Taster of the Year in 1973 and won the last World Wine Tasting Championship in 1985. To Clarke's words, the wine world listens. “You mustn’t try to be California. You can't win that battle,” Clarke told a wine-centric crowd in Richmond for the 2nd Annual Virginia Wine Summit on Oct. 28. “You mustn’t try to be French. You can't win that battle.
