The lamp now available in sizes from mini to mega is arguably Artemide’s most iconic fixture.     MARIO TRIMARCHI Via Ariosto 28, 20145 Milano [email protected] www.mariotrimarchi.eu Mario Trimarchi Architect and designer Mario Trimarchi was born in Messina. He graduated in Architecture with Franco Purini, with whom he collaborated on some projects in Sicily. In the 1980s he moved to Milan, where he lives and works. In the early 1990s, he was the director of the Master in Design at the Domus Academy and later headed the DDA, a joint venture between the Domus Academy and Mitsubishi, alternating long business trips to Japan with conferences, lectures and workshops in various countries throughout the world. In 1999 he founded Fragile, a corporate identity studio, where, in parallel with strategic positioning and communication projects for companies and institutions, he continued his personal research on design. For nearly ten years he was part of the Olivetti Design Studio, where he designed, along with Michele De Lucchi, personal computers and cash dispensers. During the same period he studied how to give a domestic touch to technological innovation, creating concept designs and products for Philips, Siemens and Matsushita Denku. From 2005 to 2015 he taught Corporate Identity at the University of Genoa and since 2013 teaches the Brand Design Course as part of the Product Design specialist degree at the Naba in Milan. Since 2016 he is the Design Advisor for the Korea Craft & Design Foundation. His objects too are created from the aesthetic experiments that distinguish his work; objects that are centered on the relationship between unstable geometries and sculpture and almost always accompanied by drawings and small illustrated stories.

    Press release Memphis 40 Years of Kitsch and Elegance 6 February 2021 to 23 January 2022, Vitra Design Museum Gallery The Memphis group was one of the most unusual phenomena to appear in the world of design in recent decades. It emerged in the winter of 1980/81, when a group of young designers eager to break away from the dogmas of functionalism and industrial design formed around the Italian architect and designer Ettore Sottsass. The group’s first collection, presented at Milan’s Arc’74 gallery in September 1981, was an international sensation. Characterized by garish colours and wild patterns, the Memphis designs seemed to have walked straight off the pages of a comic book and gave rise to a completely new look in which popular culture, advertising aesthetics, and post-modernism merged in a crazy medley. The exhibition »Memphis: 40 Years of Kitsch and Elegance« at the Vitra Design Museum Gallery celebrates the fortieth anniversary of the group’s foundation through its creations, presenting furniture, lamps, bowls, drawings, sketches, and photographs that give insight into the world of Memphis. Exhibits include works by such well-known members as Ettore Sottsass, Michele De Lucchi, George Sowden, Martine Bedin, Michael Graves, Barbara Radice, Peter Shire, Nathalie Du Pasquier, and Shiro Kuramata. The group’s declared aim was to overcome the dictates of functionalism, celebrate the banal and everyday, and break the taboos of good taste. Its design philosophy was also influenced by the emergence of the information society. Like television and computers, Memphis objects were meant to communicate with the viewer and tell their own unique story.

The installation is part of the “NATURE” exhibition series being held in the museum's Gian Ferrari Gallery, which has previously invited designers to examine the subject of the relationship between nature and artifice. According to Michele De Lucchi, the latest artist to be invited to explore the topic: “A missing link is the element that joins the isolated parts of a broken, open chain. We often need this today.
