    PRE-COMPETITION FACTS RUKA TRIPLE, FIN Stage 1: Ladies‘ / Men‘s Sprint Classic COMPETITION COURSE Ladies: 1,4 km Men: 1,4 km Bonus seconds: WEATHER FORECAST LADIES For the 10th season in a row, Ruka will host the first sprint event of the World Cup calendar (2008-2017). Marit Bjørgen (NOR) has won four of the previous 11 sprint World Cup events in Ruka (all classic style), most of all athletes and one more than Petra Majdic (SLO). Bjørgen's four sprint World Cup wins in Ruka, are joint-most for her at a single venue along with Lahti and Düsseldorf. Bjørgen is on five podium finishes in sprint World Cup events in Ruka, joint- most along with Majdic. Bjørgen has only recorded more sprint World Cup podium finishes in Davos (6) than in Ruka (5). Stina Nilsson (SWE) has won the last three sprint World Cup events (free and classic) and could become the first non-Norwegian to claim four victories in a row since Majdic in 2009. Nilsson has won each of the last five sprint World Cup events she participated in. The last time she failed to claim victory was in the sprint free in Davos on 11 December 2016 (31st). On 26 November 2016, Nilsson won the sprint classic in Ruka, her first ever World Cup victory in classic style. Only Maiken Caspersen Falla (NOR, 10) has claimed more sprint World Cup wins since the start of 2014/15 than Nilsson (9). Last season's sprint World Cup winner Falla has reached the podium in 14 of her last 15 sprint World Cup appearances with a 31st-place finish in Drammen (classic style) on 8 March as the only exception.

    PRESS RELEASE For immediate release FIS Cross-Country World Cup Quebec City to host world’s elite cross-country skiers again in 2019 and 2020 Quebec City, Friday, October 6, 2017 – News doesn’t get any fresher than this! With the annual FIS (International Ski Federation) Technical Committee and FIS Cross-Country Committee meetings still underway in Zurich, it has just been confirmed that the FIS Cross-Country World Cup Finals will be coming back to Canada in March 2019 and 2020. “It’s a huge step forward for Quebec City to cement its place on the calendar for two years in a row, said FIS Race Director Pierre Mignerey. “We should stress, though, that the entire race calendars for both years are subject to FIS Council approval this November.” All bets, therefore, are on the world’s elite cross-country skiers taking the Plains of Abraham by storm from March 22 to 24, 2019. “The format of the 2020 event is yet to be confirmed, but the 2019 competition will be the same as what we saw in March this year,” added Gestev President, Patrice Drouin from his seat at the FIS meetings. That means it’s going to be all hands on deck for Quebec Winter Events Corporation and event producer Gestev in the next few months as preparation begins for these world-class events. The most recent FIS Cross-Country World Cup Finals attracted more than 60,000 people to Quebec City’s Plains of Abraham in March 2017 and the event was voted the top stop on the World Cup circuit last season, according to an FIS survey.

    FIS TOUR DE SKI PREVIEW LADIES • This will be the 12th edition of the Tour de Ski. The previous 11 have been won by six different athletes from four different countries. • Justyna Kowalczyk (POL) is on a record four Tour de Ski victories. Therese Johaug (NOR) and Virpi Kuitunen (FIN) both won on two occasions. Charlotte Kalla (SWE), Marit Bjørgen (NOR) and Heidi Weng (NOR) all triumphed once. • Only Charlotte Kalla in 2007/08, Virpi Kuitunen in 2008/09 and Justyna Kowalczyk in 2011/12 failed to win the overall World Cup title in the same season. • The last four editions of the Tour de Ski have all been won by Norwegian athletes: Johaug (2013/14, 2015/16), Bjørgen (2014/15) and Weng (2016/17). • Last season's winner Heidi Weng could become the second athlete to record back-to-back Tour de Ski victories after Kowalczyk, who won four in a row between 2010 and 2013. • Norway have recorded 16 overall top-three finishes in the Tour de Ski, at least 11 more than any other country (Finland 5). • Norway have claimed at least one overall podium spot in each of the last seven editions of the Tour de Ski. In 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16, they even swept the podium. • Stefanie Böhler (GER) is the only athlete to have appeared in all previous 11 editions of the Tour de Ski. Böhler's best result came in 2014/15, when she finished in 11th place in the overall standings. • Only Aino-Kaisa Saarinen (73) has appeared in more Tour de Ski stages than Böhler (70).

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 13, 2019 Lenny Valjas and Emily Nishikawa claim the first Gold Medals at the 93rd Canadian Cross-Country Ski Championships, in Gatineau Race action continues tomorrow, with the 2nd day of the Pursuit Race. Gatineau, Quebec: Today was the first day of action at the Nakkertok Nordic Ski Centre and National Team veterans Lenny Valjas of Toronto and Emily Nishikawa of Whitehorse came out on top in the senior, classic style competitions. Lenny, a double Olympian, with 7 World Cup podiums to his name, was in a hard-fought battle with junior racer, Remi Drolet of Rossland, B.C., for much of the race. It was the more experienced Valjas who prevailed over the final few kilometres. Remi, who was 7th at this year’s World Junior Championships, finished as the top Junior competitor. Filling out the senior podium on the men’s side, was Bob Thompson of Woodstock, Ontario, 15 seconds back of Valjas. He was followed by young, local star Antoine Cyr of Gatineau, only a little over a second later, in bronze position. Lenny Valjas: “Today was great. It is inspiring to see all the young skiers out here racing, as I head into my final World Cup races in Quebec City. Remi made me push hard today, you have to be on your “A” game to beat him. He is the future and I am happy to see the young guys nipping at my heels”. Claiming silver in the junior race was Sam Hendry of Canmore and again it was a local skier, Ottawa’s Pierre Grall-Johnson that was just a second back from a silver medal.

    Preview ladies' 3-Days Tour Lillehammer - 30 Nov-2 Dec 2018 • Charlotte Kalla won last year's 3-Days Tour to become the first ever non- Norwegian winner of the opening mini tour in Ruka or Lillehammer. Therese Johaug triumphed in 2015 and Heidi Weng took the number one spot in 2016. • Three of the last four winners of the 3-Days Tour went on to win the overall World Cup title that season. In that run only Kalla in 2017/18 failed to claim the overall World Cup despite winning the opening mini tour. • Norway has claimed 17 of all 24 podium spots in 3-Days Tour history (71%). Only Sweden (4), Poland (2) and Finland (1) also managed to record a top-three finish in the competition. • Norway had at least two athletes on the podium in seven of the eight editions of the 3-Days Tour. • Weng is the only athlete to have reached the podium in both previous 3- Days Tours held in Lillehammer. Weng won the 2016 edition and finished in third place in 2014. • Jessica Diggins and Sadie Bjornsen are both hoping to become the first ever non-European winner of one of the Tours (3-Days Tour, Tour de Ski, World Cup Final, Ski Tour Canada). • Krista Pärmäkoski, fourth in last season's Tour de Ski, could become the second Tour winner from Finland after 2006/07 and 2008/09 Tour de Ski champion and 2007/08 World Cup Final winner Virpi Kuitunen. • Pärmäkoski, compatriot Anne Kyllönen and Ingvild Flugstad Østberg are the only athletes to have appeared in all 23 Tours since the start of 2010/11 (3-Days Tour, Tour de Ski, World Cup Final, Ski Tour Canada).

    PRE-COMPETITION FACTS DAVOS, SUI Ladies’ 10 km / Men‘s 15km Individual Free COMPETITION COURSE Ladies: 2 x 5 km Intermediate positions: 2,2, 5 and 8.2 km Men: 3 x 5 km Intermediate positions: 2.2, 8.2, 10, 12.2 km WEATHER FORECAST LADIES • Marit Bjørgen (NOR) has won a record equaling four consecutive 10km World Cup races in freestyle and classic combined (excluding pursuits, including stage races). • Marja - Liisa Kirvesniemi (FIN) was the first to achieve this feat in 1983, followed by Bente Skari (NOR, 2002 - 2003) and Justyna KowalcZyk (POL, 2011 - 2012). • The first of these four 10km races in Bjørgen's streak was the last 10km World Cup event in the freestyle, held in Ulricehamn on 21 January 2017. • The last time Bjørgen won successive 10km freestyle in the World Cup events was in March - December 2014, when she won in Lahti and Davos. • Charlotte Kalla (SWE) won the distance event last week in Lillehammer (skiathlon), her eighth distance victory in the World Cup (including stages). All other Swedish women have won seven World Cup distance races combined (excluding relay). • Kalla can win back - to - back distance races for the seco nd times following her wins in the 10km freestyle on 29 December 2007 and 1 January 2008 in the Tour de Ski (both in Nové Mesto na Morave). • Kalla is the only woman to have finished on the podium in all three World Cup distance races this season, finishing second in the 10km classic and third in the 10km pursuit in Ruka, before winning the skiathlon last week.
