Walking Walking is a great way to get around and the best thing is that it is free. It’s also an easy way to get fitness into your daily routine. It is recommended that adults get 150 minutes of exercise per week (which works out as 30 minutes per day over five days in the week). One of the easiest ways to accomplish this is heading out for a brisk walk! There are many benefits to walking:

• Can help maintain body weight and lower the risk of obesity;

• Can lower the risk of chronic diseases and high blood pressure;

• Improvements to your mood and wellbeing; and also

• Studies show that it can encourage and improve creativity!

Hawkridge Court is just minutes away from shops and services along the Lewes Road, Moulsecoomb Railway Station, Wild Park and Down Local Nature Reserves, Moulsecoomb and Bevendean Primary Schools as well as Doctors Surgeries such as the Avenue GP Surgery. All are fairly level and good for walking and cycling. For some journeys, it is often quicker to walk. Any distance up to 400 metres is faster than catching a bus. The majority of the streets and areas shown in Fig 1 (page 1) can be walked in under 25 minutes.

Key destinations in the local area are listed in Fig 2.

• Improving wellbeing by relieving stress;

• Helps prevent chronic and life threatening illnesses;

• Being more cost effective than running a car. Did you know, maintaining a bike for a year costs twenty times less than maintaining and driving a car; and

In Brighton & Hove, cycling is one of the fastest modes of transport, door to door. When you take into account the traffic and cost of car or bus, cycling quickly becomes a sensible option for getting around.

The City Centre (including Churchill Square and the Laines), seafront and Brighton Station are within a reasonable cycling distance of the scheme. There are bike‐friendly routes (National Cycle Route 2) along the Lewes Road (A270), London Road (A23) and the seafront. There is also an excellent provision of cycle stands located at Brighton Station, Grand Parade, and St Peters Church for commuters, visitors and shoppers.

Like walking, cycling is a great way to exercise. You could use your bike to visit relatives and friends, to commute to work or when travelling around the city. You don’t have to do it every day, but just once a week stops your bike getting rusty!

Cycle maps are available at www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/cycling. This website allows you to easily plan cycle journeys with variable route options available to all levels of cyclist.

For details of National Cycle Routes and all matters to do with cycling see: www.sustrans.org

If you wish to record your cycle ride and compare your performance overtime, as well as share with the local community you should visit: www.strava.com. Strava can also be used for running, walking and other workouts.

Cycle Parking Covered and secure cycle parking is provided within two cycle stores at Hawkridge Court, enough for 36 bicycles. There is also space inside the wheelchair flats on the ground floor for mobility scooters, together with charging points.

Travelling by car The Hawkridge Court Travel Pack is not anti-car. However, we do like to encourage smarter and greener car travel where possible. Did you know:

• Each week, the average person spends seven hours in their car;

• The average annual cost of car insurance is £436; and finally

• Drivers spend on average £89.67 per month on fuel.

Sometimes it’s a necessity to drive, so here are seven eco-driving tips that can help make a difference to your journey:

1. Service your car regularly to maintain engine efficiency;

2. Check your tyre pressures regularly (and before long journeys), under- inflated tyres use more fuel as they increase rolling resistance;

3. Lose any unnecessary baggage, extra weight means extra fuel;

4. Combine short trips; cold starts use more fuel so it pays to combine errands;

5. Drive smoothly, accelerate gently and read the road ahead to avoid unnecessary braking;

6. Cut down on the air-con; air-conditioning increases fuel consumption at low speeds (the effects are less noticeable at higher speeds; and

7. The faster you go the greater the fuel consumption (cruising at 70mph uses up to 9% more fuel than at 60mph and up to 15% more fuel than at 50mph).

Car Sharing and Car Clubs By sharing the same or similar journeys with other people you can save money on the cost of car travel as well as meet new people. Lift sharing is a

The car club in Brighton & Hove is run by Enterprise. More details can be found at: www.enterprisecarclub.co.uk/gb/en/home.html
