PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • NI ROCKS Interviews ROXY PETRUCCI from VIXEN / JSRG / MADAM X
NI ROCKS Interviews ROXY PETRUCCI from VIXEN / JSRG / MADAM X Written by NI ROCKS Tuesday, 29 January 2013 01:00 - Last Updated Monday, 18 February 2013 20:32 I recently contacted drumming legend Roxy Petrucci to do an interview for Rock Radio NI. The timing seemed right as her new band JSRG had just been announced for Firefest in October and the band were also embarking on the Monsters of Rock Cruise. Most people will know Roxy as the drummer from Vixen in the late 80s and early 90s, but she also played with Madam X before that and in a number of bands since. Her new band JSRG consists of three of the original members of Vixen. I must admit I got quite a buzz out of doing this interview (even if only by e-mail) as it’s not every day you get to ask questions to someone who you watched on TV and listened to on the stereo in your late teens / early twenties in the heyday of classic rock! NI ROCKS – Happy New Year to you Roxy. Thanks for agreeing to answer a few questions for Rock Radio NI. As it’s the start of a new year we’ll start with a few questions about what you’re doing now and over the next few months before we talk about your career to date. 2013 looks like it is going to be a great year for your new venture JSRG which consists of three of the members of the successful Vixen line-up from the late 80s - early 90s.

  • Female Rock Pioneers
FEATURE FEMALE ROCK PIONEERS In an era when men looked like women, it was still tough for female rockers to make it in a male-dominated world. Paul Suter tracks down five women who featured as Kerrang! Ladykillers to discuss Eighties attitudes to girls who wanted to rock, and find out what they’re doing now. Roth… they were all sex symbols. But they IT’S NOT THE EIGHTIES any more, which for those of us and Rock Goddess had already emerged. Then along weren’t treated in a sexist manner and the with a nostalgic bent may not be good news. • Flutists' Family Tree : in Search of the American Flute School / by Demetra
FLUTISTS’ FAMILY TREE: IN SEARCH OF THE AMERICAN FLUTE SCHOOL DOCUMENT Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Demetra Baferos Fair, M.M. ***** The Ohio State University 2003 Dissertation Committee: Professor Katherine Borst Jones, Adviser Approved by Professor Lois Rosow Professor Christopher Weait Adviser School of Music Copyright by Demetra Baferos Fair 2003 ABSTRACT For decades, American flutists have sought to identify specific traits that define their playing as a whole. While the “French School” has been characterized by a preoccupation with tone, a standard repertoire, and set of teaching materials written by Paris Conservatoire professors, no such definition can yet be set forth for the “American School.” This document provides a clear starting point for research into the what, where, why, and how of the “American Flute School” by first identifying who is associated with that school. By tracing the lineage of transverse flute playing from teacher to student through the past 300 years, we may identify orchestral flutist, soloist, and teacher, Georges Barrère, as a primary influence upon American flute playing. Barrère and his students – and his students’ students – have taught approximately 91% of all living flutists in the United States today. Of that vast number, approximately 87% can trace their heritage (through one or more of their teachers) to Barrère student William Kincaid, renowned flutist of the Philadelphia Orchestra and pedagogue at the Curtis Institute of Music. It is important to note that most modern musicians study with more than one teacher over the course of their career (usually between three and eight).
