Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of 175 silver print black and white photographs of Indiana houses (primarily Indianapolis) built in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Each print is mounted on a board measuring 20 x 16 inches, with notes on the name/description of the house, its location, construction year, and the owner of the house. The photographs are arranged chronologically by construction year, represented by the dates in the box listing (dates of the photographs are unknown). These mounted prints were created by Wilbur David Peat during his time as Director of the John Herron Art Institute (JHAI) in Indianapolis, IN. It is possible that the photographs were displayed at the JHAI, but there is no record of an exhibition. They were likely created around the time that Peat published his book, Indiana Houses of the Nineteenth Century (Indiana Historical Society Press, 1962), as many of the images appear as plates in the book. The prints have been housed in the Print Storage Room of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and were transferred to the IMA Archives by Curator of Drawings, Prints and Photographs Marty Krause in August 2016.
