    In the Beginning – A Very Abbreviated History of the Earliest Days of Science Fiction Fandom by Rich Lynch The history of science fiction fandom in certain ways is not unlike the geological history of the Earth. Back in the earliest geological era, most of Earth’s land mass was combined into one super- continent, Pangaea. The earliest days of science fiction fandom were comparable, in that once there was a solitary fan group, the Science Fiction League (or SFL), that attempted to bring most of the science fiction fans together into a single organization. The SFL was created by publisher Hugo Gernsback in the May 1934 issue of Wonder Stories. Science fiction fandom was already in existence by then, but it mostly consisted of isolated individuals publishing fan magazines with one or two fan clubs existing in large population centers. This would soon change. That issue of Wonder sported the colorful emblem of the SFL on its cover: a wide-bodied multi-rocketed spaceship passing in front of the Earth. Inside, Gernsback’s four-page editorial summed up the SFL as an organization “for the furtherance and betterment of the art of science fiction” and implored fans to join the new organization and “spread the gospel of science fiction.” The response was almost immediate. Fans from various parts of the United States wrote enthusiastic letters, many of which were published by Gernsback in Wonder’s letters column. Some of the respondents started chapters of the SFL in various cities, and most of the science fiction clubs that already existed became affiliates of the SFL.

TEACHING PULP MAGAZINE WRITING Science fiction classes in colleges throughout the nation have become common­ place today. Estimates place their numbers at in excess of 500, and there are universities and colleges abroad which also have such courses. The first such course in history -was taught by myself at City College of New York, and ran from 1953 through 1955. I was listed as a member of the faculty and received compensa­ tion from the college based on the number of students in the class. Guest lec­ turers included Robert A. Heinlein, John W. Campbell, Isaac Asimov, Lester del Rey, Robert Sheckley and others. I gave it up when an editorial position at Quick Fro­ zen Foods magazine required that my evenings be available for special assignments. I plan to do a special article on that pioneering course sometime in the future. I mention it because some regard genre writing instruction as novel. While no earlier course on science fiction is known, there were special courses at New York University in 1942 on various specialist pulp categories. Marie Rodell taught a professional course on the Detective Story and Willard Crosby on the Action Story. These were part of a group of professional short story writing classes, headed by William Byron Mowery, well-known in the twenties and thirties for his action pulp adventures.

Howard United Press Association (REHupa) was founded in 1972 by a teen-aged Tim Marion as the first amateur press association (apa) devoted to Howard. Reforms by the next Official Editor (OE), Jonathan Bacon, had gone a good way toward making the fanzine Mailings look less amateurish, which in turn attracted more and better members. There was still too many Mailing Comments being made relative to the material worth commenting on, still too little that concerned Howard himself, and still too much being said about tangential matters (pastiches, comics, gaming, etc.) or personal affairs. A lot of fan fiction and poetry was being contributed, but this did garner a lot of appreciation and commentary from the other members. The next OE, Brian Earl Brian, put in a lot of work guiding the organization, though not always competently. Former, longtime REHupan James Van Hise wrote the first comprehensive history of REHupa through Mailing #175. [2] Like him, but more so, we are focusing only on noteworthy content, especially that relevant to Howard. Here are the highlights of Mailings #36 through #45. In Mailing #36 (Nov., 1978), member and longtime agent for the Howard heirs, Glenn Lord, reports on the 4th World Fantasy Convention in Fort Worth, Tex., the previous month: I thought the convention to be quite good … I … picked up Kirby McCauley … and we drove to Cross Plains where I showed him what sights there are to see in that sleepy little town (but failed to find a couple of people I wanted to see at home).

Or fantasy fiction, for that matter, as this is the National FANTASY Fan Federation. Well, that term “fantasy” was often used to describe science fiction back in the days when the N3F was originated. “These are fantasies”, people would say of the stories published in the magazines—much of which talk ended up in the letter columns. Sometimes the term “science fantasy” would replace “science fiction”, which was the term announced in Amazing Stories. “Scientifiction”, or “scientific fiction” was tried out as an alternative term, but the stf wasn’t always that scientific. These terms were juggled around quite a bit. Now there is science fiction and fantasy, two enduring terms, though there’s an attempt to replace one if not both with “Speculative Fiction”.
