Greenberg (2011)
Greenberg (2011) “You like me so much more than you think you do.” Major Credits: Director: Noah Baumbach Screenplay: Noah Baumbach, from a story by Baumbach and Jennifer Jason Leigh Cinematography: Harris Savides Music: James Murphy Principal Cast: Ben Stiller (Roger Greenberg), Greta Gerwig (Florence), Rhys Ifans (Ivan), Jennifer Jason Leigh (Beth) Production Background: Baumbach, the son of two prominent New York writers whose divorce he chronicled in his earlier feature The Squid and the Whale (2005), co-wrote the screenplay with his then-wife, Jennifer Jason Leigh, who plays the role of Greenberg’s former girlfriend. His friend and sometime collaborator (they wrote The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou together), Wes Anderson, co-produced Greenberg with Leigh. Most of Baumbach’s films to date deal with characters who are disappointed in their lives, which do not conform to their ideal conceptions of themselves. At whatever age—a father in his 40s, his pretentious teenage son (The Squid and the Whale), a college graduate in her late twenties (Frances Ha, 2012)—they struggle to act like grownups. The casting of Greta Gerwig developed into an enduring romantic and creative partnership: Gerwig co-wrote and starred in his next two films, Frances Ha and Mistress America (2015). You can read about Baumbach and Gerwig in Ian Parker’s fine article published in New Yorker, April 29, 2013. Cinematic Qualities: 1. Screenplay: Like the work of one of his favorite filmmakers, Woody Allen, Baumbach’s dramedy combines literate observation (“All the men dress up as children and the children dress as superheroes”) and bitter commentary (“Life is wasted on… people”) with poignant confession (“It’s huge to finally embrace the life you never planned on”). -

User Password Sign Up | Forgot Password Thursday, Dec 08 , 2005 Devo - Live 1980 (DVD) Posted :Thu, Dec 8th, 2005 00:20:24 Devo Devo - Live 1980 (DVD) Target Video Review By : Vivien Weimar With 80s nostalgia being de rigueur these days, the time is ripe for a DEVO reunion. The reclusive new wave band usually doesn't tour much as original founder Mark Mothersbaugh has since moved on to creating commercials and soundtracks at his Los Angeles production company Mutato Muzika (that fantastically weird space-ship-looking building on Sunset Boulevard) along with the other Devo members save Jerry Casale who has been directing videos for such bands as the Foo Fighters and Soundgarden. However, this summer Devo got together and played limited dates all across the country--and this fall they released Live 1980, a full-length concert video shot at the Phoenix Theatre in Petaluma, CA on August 17, 1980. Complete with white uniforms, blue background screen and "energy domes" (don't you dare call them flower-pot hats), Devo play the hits off of their albums, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We are Devo!, Duty Now For the Future and Freedom of Choice. Twenty-one songs are featured in this 75-minute disc including the classic MTV staple "Whip It", the oft-covered "Girl U Want", and their own covers of Johnny River's classic "Secret Agent Man" and the Rolling Stones "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction". -
Post-Postmodern Cinema at the Turn of the Millennium: Paul Thomas Anderson’S Magnolia
Revista de Estudios Norteamericanos, vol. 24, 2020. Seville, Spain, ISSN 1133-309-X, pp. 1-21. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.12795/REN.2020.i24.01 POST-POSTMODERN CINEMA AT THE TURN OF THE MILLENNIUM: PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON’S MAGNOLIA JESÚS BOLAÑO QUINTERO Universidad de Cádiz [email protected] Received: 20 May 2020 Accepted: 26 July 2020 KEYWORDS Magnolia; Paul Thomas Anderson; post-postmodern cinema; New Sincerity; French New Wave; Jean-Luc Godard; Vivre sa Vie PALABRAS CLAVE Magnolia; Paul Thomas Anderson; cine post-postmoderno; Nueva Sinceridad; Nouvelle Vague; Jean-Luc Godard; Vivir su vida ABSTRACT Starting with an analysis of the significance of the French New Wave for postmodern cinema, this essay sets out to make a study of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia (1999) as the film that marks the beginning of what could be considered a paradigm shift in American cinema at the end of the 20th century. Building from the much- debated passing of postmodernism, this study focuses on several key postmodern aspects that take a different slant in this movie. The film points out the value of aspects that had lost their meaning within the fiction typical of postmodernism—such as the absence of causality; sincere honesty as opposed to destructive irony; or the loss of faith in Lyotardian meta-narratives. We shall look at the nature of the paradigm shift to link it to the desire to overcome postmodern values through a recovery of Romantic ideas. -
Stillness in Time (1994)
Stillness in Time (1994) Transcription Notes: If you read through many of the old interviews done with Stuart you will know that he was highly inspired by Latin rhythm and time concepts. Although Jay liked this aspect of his playing, none of it really showed up on the !rst album. By the time the ‘The Return of the Space Cowboy’ was released, Stu’s Latin vibe was clearly showing through – possibly due to the arrival of new drummer Derrick McKenzie too. ‘Stillness in Time’ is by far one of the most technical Jamiroquai bass lines in terms of timing. The bass line is predominately based on a root-!fth movement which sometimes includes the 9th also. He then embellishes on top of this to "esh-out the bass part more - but this basic and common outline is always there. This is another of those tracks using the Warwick 4 string. The sound is not so de!ned and since it is an airy Latin/Samba groove, a lot of the notes are tied over to ring. The sound you are aiming to replicate (or get similar to) the record would be to boost the bass a little and add extra middle to your sound. Make sure it is smooth and punchy – muddy isn’t a bad sound for this track, particularly almost Dub like. You will be required to use the full extent of your technique on this track to nail it well. Try to consistently be a bar or two ahead of your playing (sight reading wise) so you are aware of what is approaching. -

Shakespeare on Film, Video & Stage
William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. From helping with making informed decisions about a new movie script with respect to aspects such as its origi- nality, similarity to other movies, or even commercial viability, all the way to offering consumers new and interesting ways of viewing the final movie, many stages in the life-cycle of a movie stand to benefit from Machine Learning techniques that promise to reduce human effort, time, or both. -
