A Long, Long Time
June 7 – 11 ETTALONG BEACH NSW Proudly supported by ASC wishes to acknowledge the Darkinyung people who are the Traditional Custodians of the land upon which this event is taking place. We pay our respect to Elders past and present, and extend that respect to all indigenous people joining us at ASC this year. Message from the Founder Welcome to the 2018 Australian Songwriters Conference. To think it almost didn’t happen! How do I begin to say “Thank you” to everyone who has made ASC2018 possible? I have to begin with a huge shout out to the group of ASCers who rallied together to make sure ASC2018 would go ahead this year, most especially Elizabeth Usher, Renee Jonas, Terri Rowe, Mary Harrison, Tiffany Gow and Christine Kerr - you are my heroes! Thank you for going above and beyond to get the crowd funding campaign up and running, and for supporting and assisting me all the way through the past few months of event preparation. To everyone who supported the crowd funding campaign and helped to make it a success – thank you so much for believing in this event and funding our campaign. Finally, thank you to the amazing industry professionals, particularly the ‘Core’ Faculty members, for being so incredibly generous and supportive by turning up every year, sharing your time, knowledge and wisdom and being so incredibly humble and easy to work with. This year couldn’t have happened without you all, so I thank you and appreciate you more than words can say. ASC also wouldn’t be possible without the support of our wonderful partners. -
An Interview with Megan Washington by Megan Spencer Australian Musician Magazine, November 2010
‘Fireflies in a jar’ - an interview with Megan Washington By Megan Spencer Australian Musician Magazine, November 2010. There are those among us whose minds work differently when it comes to storytelling. Rather than sit down and ‘tell a story’, they sit down and and ‘tell a song’. These people are ‘hardwired’ for song. When stories start spinning in their heads and hearts, poetry spills out (not prose) which, coupled with music, become ‘lyrics’. Spontaneously and simultaneously music generates from within their imaginations to accompany each word. Melody and rhythm entwine themselves around phrases, until they fuse to form verses, choruses, repeat; and then become… song. Megan Washington aka ‘Washington’ is one of these enviable ‘right-brained people’, a latter- day songstress or “chanteuse” as she is often referred to, not only in the media but by herself as well. (On Washington’s MySpace under ‘About Me’ you will find, “Chanteuse: noun (literary): a female singer, especially one who sings on the stage in a theatre or bar, where elegant people fall about in frantic and frenzied splendour.”) Since emerging onto the national stage just over 12 months ago, people have been swooning over the sound of Washington’s voice and music. But it is her songwriting that leaves its mark; strong, poetic, narrative, with a distinct emotional tone. It smacks of a discipline in advance of her 24 years and defines her presence within the Australian musical landscape. “Songwriting for me sits somewhere between therapy, memory and fantasy,” says Megan, fresh from her first stint at Splendour In The Grass, where she got to belt out songs from her just-released debut album, ‘I Believe You Liar’. -

It describes the creation of a tailored historical geodatabase built from samples of gig listings (comprising dates, locations, and performer names), and how this historical geodatabase offers insight into the changing dynamics of performers and venue locations. The major findings from the analyses using the developed historical geodatabase are that neither city showed a decline in live music performance or performer numbers, but Melbourne increased at a greater rate than Sydney. -
21St September 2018 Submission to the House Standing Committee on Communications and the Arts Inquiry Into Factors Contributing
21st September 2018 Submission to the House Standing Committee on Communications and The Arts Inquiry into factors contributing to the growth and sustainability of the Australian Music Industry https://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Committees/House/Communications/ Australianmusicindustry INTRODUCTION Thank you for considering this submission, which is in collaboration with the Australian Association of Musicians (AM). My name is Andrew Barnum, as a PhD candidate at UTS in the Faculty of Arts and Social Science, my study is investigating the cultural contexts of Identity, Artifact and Change through the lens of Australian Song in the age of digital music. To date I’ve interviewed thirty-five Australian songwriters (genders and music genres) to understand the conditions in which their practice exists in Australia. In consideration of the terms of reference stated for this inquiry, it’s important to start with some unifying statements as drivers of purpose for this submission. WHAT ARE OUR COMMON BELIEFS AS AUSTRALIANS? As a community of Australian artists and citizens, we are informed by the belief that our nation should strive to be a productive nation - empathic, respectful, imaginative, industrious, adaptive, open and successful. (Creative Australia 2013) In this submission we are considering the reasons why our Association should support these beliefs as central to our strategy to re-invigorate The Australian music Industry, which is both a cultural and commercial Australian enterprise, locally and globally. This submission considers the factors that will grow and sustain our uniquely Australian Music Industry, as a proud Cultural and Creative Industry, and in doing so, confirm our sense of self as Australian musical entrepreneurs, our desire to feel we belong here in our birthplace as Australian artists, producers and copyright holders, and can sustain livelihood and opportunity at home, as productive members of the field of cultural production in Australia. -

Songs in the Key of Melbourne; Melbourne in the Key of Song
Songs in the key of Melbourne; Melbourne In the Key of Song. Research assignment SRA744 - Urban Patterns and Precedents Matt Novacevski, 2013 “Representations of a city and its life in the arts can be narrative ‘portraits’, local or ‘synoptic’ descriptions, ac- cording to Shapiro. Choosing a particular city—[...your A1 city ?...]— as the object of such representation, examine and discuss what can be learned about the nature of that city from any of those descriptions. Use specific examples for you inferences to give them credibility.” It has been claimed that Melbourne is the subject of popular song more than any Australian city (1). Since the 1970s, the city has been an incubator for the Australian music scene, growing some of Australia’s biggest artists and music industry players (2). In this context, it is natural that this music would that tell us much about the nature of Melbourne. Melbourne has been a muse to musicians and songwriters, which have in turn left to the city a series of cultural portraits in their songs that have not only described Melbourne; they have shaped its reality. Melbourne and its songwriters can be seen to have developed a symbiotic relationship where songwriters are inspired by the many faces of the city, while their songs are cultural documents that influence the way people view and interact with the city. As Keeling says, music acts “as a mirror to and for society, and it plays a very important role in shaping both our social identity and the identity of places” (3). While this project demonstrates the importance of popular music in reflecting and shaping the Melbourne’s sense of place, it does not seek to provide a comprehensive account of all this material - partly because songwriting focused on and inspired by Melbourne has been so prolific.
