Proffitf and lasting impression of him comes from my student days-what a won- derful teacher he was, and how genuinely proud I was because "we" had him on our faculty. He was even then recognized as a "real comer," particularly in the area of taxation. Our closer association in later years only confirmed my original opinions. This is not intended nor is it an appropriate place for a eulogy of Pro- fessor Wright. I hope that you agree, and that you will remember this when you are asked to contribute to subsequent campaigns.

Matching Gift Programs for Law Firms For many years a growing number of commercial companies have recognized the importance of charitable giving and have supported a wide variety of worthy causes, and, at the same time, have encouraged their employees and ]antes Van Dyke Rnlp11 Pal11 Fichtner and guest officers to contribute to their own favorite charities by instituting pro- grams through which the company matched the individual's charitable gifts. For reasons that to me are not entirely clear law firms have been slow to follow suit. But the practice has started and the number of firms with matching programs is growing slowly but steadily. In my opinion this idea should take off like a rocket. In addition to all of the reasons that have persuaded hundreds of commercial organizations to adopt matching gift programs, there is an additional and special reason why these programs should be attractive to law firms. All of the "raw material" for the legal profession-your new associ- ates and partners, the judges, many future legislators, and all the new members of the -will come from the law schools. The quality of this "raw material" will depend to a large extent on how well-each law school does its job, and its ability to do a good job will certainly be influenced by its financial situation. A matching gift program is a good way the law firm can become directly involved in the "production process." This is but one reason, but a strong reason, for czjcr!/ law firm to have some kind of a Kay Felt and the Ann Arbor office will Compliments matching gift program. be glad to share whatever we know We have already made it clear that In 1982 Ms. Kay Felt, now our with you, so that you can develop the these records do not just "happen." Scott Bass led Region I, which is the state of New York, to new high marks with a jump of 8.S0/0 in the number of gifts, and an increase of 70.296 in dollars. Region 11, extending from through on the east coast, under the direction of Jerry Libin, increased gifts 5.1°h and dollars 26Olo.

(3) Several states that are parts of larger regions showed dramatic increases this vear. Since some are J. (4) In Houston, Texas Sarah Margu- lies (who serves as co-chairperson for Region XIV as well) obtained 11 additional gifts in 1982 (an increase of 18.8%) and 46.5% more dollars than were contributed in 1982. (5) Region X deserves a special word. The entire region consists of but two counties in Michigan (Wayne and Oakland) but contains more alumni than any other region. Not surpris- ingly, with this concentration, it has always responded strongly to the annual appeals and has long been the annual leader in both the total num- bers of individual gifts and dollars contributed. As a consequence, new high marks, especially substantial ones, are difficult to achieve. But, they are happening. With Jonathan Lowe as chairman, and John Lynch, John Quinn and James C. VanDyke as his principal , individual gifts increased more than 6.3% in 1982 (from 938 to 997) and total contribu- tions rose from $172,053 to $202,241, a gain of 17.5%. Remarkable!

Foreign Participation In 1982, for the first time, a "people power letter," asking for volunteers to help with the campaign, was sent to Mnrk Stichel, Clalrdin Roberts, Douglas Ellnmn,~ our alumni living in foreign countries. Although fund raising for charitable causes is not a common happening in many of these countries as it is in Law School alumni, friends of the Law the , and although there School, and members of the "Law are no tax incentives for most donors School Family" (usually spouses of alumni) whose gifts or commitments to from these countries for gifts to the the University now qualify them for University of Michigan, the response inclusion within one of these special in both the number of volunteers and ultimate contributions was heartwarm- groups. Michigan Income Tax Credit We remind those of you whose income is subject to the Michigan Income Tax that your gifts to the Law School or Law School Fund do qualify for the credit provision in Section 260 of the Michigan income tax statute. Thus, without trying to get too tech- nical here (obviously you will want to look at the statute), within the limita- tions of the Act the taxpaver can receive credit equal to S@"O of his or her charitable contributions to institu- tions of higher learning located within Michigan. Since these charitable gifts also qualify as deductions on your Federal return (in contrast to the Mich- igan credit) it means that many of you can make a substantial sift to the Fund, up to 6200, or up to S400 if you file a joint return, without a vey larle increase in your cash outlay. Dear Terry:

Thank you for your kind words concerning the success of the Law School Fund.

The results in the last few years have been significant and I would love to be able to take credit for them. However, I am well aware that what has been achieved during the last two years is the result of work done by many people before mv tenure began. My efforts have been more in the nature of minor tinkering with a well-running machine rather than anv dramatic change of direction or method. If these efforts have added anything to the Law School Fund, it is more likely that the benefit will appear in the future rather than being reflected in our recent successes.

There is a human tendency to give credit for the success of an organization to its titular head and I am pleased to have the opportunity to temporarily fill that role. But I know the success really belongs to having a good "product" and the work of some 400 people year after year.

Thank you again for your warm note.

Very truly yours,

Dear Dick:

I do want to let you know now how grateful we are for your services as national chairman of the Law School Fund during the past two years. Your success seems to me a little short of remarkable.

I had assumed that the growth we experienced during the two years of Bill Greening's chairmanship meant that we were in for either a reduction or at best a rather small increase. Instead, it appears that over the two years you will have succeeded in increasing contributions to the Fund by nearly a third and in substantially increasing the number of contributors. It is quite an accomplishment, and the School is greatly in your debt.

Sincerely, ,--/
