DISTRICT ATTORNEY COUNTY OF NEW YORK ONE HOGAN PLACE New York, N. Y. 10013 (212) 335-9000 CYRUS R. VANCE, JR. DISTRICT ATTORNEY Lateral Employment Opportunities The New York County District Attorney’s Office seeks experienced attorneys for positions in various divisions within the office. The Trial Division has principal responsibility for prosecuting misdemeanor and felony crimes. It is comprised of six trial bureaus, and a number of specialized bureaus and units which target certain types of crimes or have other specialized knowledge, training and experience. Assistants in the Trial Division prosecute cases vertically. This means that they are assigned cases immediately after arrest and are responsible for those cases to final disposition by trial or plea. This vertical prosecution system means that one prosecutor will usually stay with the case from start to finish, better serving the victims, witnesses and law enforcement officials involved in the prosecution of crime. Felony assistants in the specialized bureaus and units develop expertise in certain types of crimes, involving sex crimes, child abuse, domestic violence, elder abuse, cybercrimes, identity theft, hate crimes, vehicular crimes, and other serious violent crime. The Trial Division also handles public assistance fraud, litigation surrounding psychiatric evaluations, landlord-tenant narcotics evictions, as well as a crime strategies unit that identifies groups and individuals most responsible for committing crimes in our communities. The Investigation Division is staffed by experienced Assistant District Attorneys who work with investigators, analysts, and accountants on a variety of white collar, corruption, and organized crime prosecutions. Cases within the Investigation Division are developed through proactive investigations. ADAs assigned to the Investigation Division have previous trial and/or appellate litigation experience. Positions are currently available in the following bureaus and units: • The Major Economic Crimes Bureau focuses on criminal conduct committed in the financial sector, including securities, commodities, and investment fraud; mortgage fraud and financial institution fraud; commercial bribery and kickbacks; bank fraud; structured investment schemes; fraud via the Internet; and international money laundering and terror financing. • The Rackets Bureau prosecutes traditional and non-traditional organized crime, including criminal enterprises, construction-related companies, and other businesses or loosely formed groups of co-conspirators that engage in repeated criminal activity. • The Special Prosecutions Bureau prosecutes financial frauds including embezzlement, extortion, schemes to defraud, public benefits fraud, and individuals that engage in financial schemes that target the elderly and immigrant communities. • The Tax Crimes Unit seeks attorneys with experience in complex tax investigations and litigation. The Appeals Division attorneys provide New York’s appellate courts and all federal courts with in-depth written and oral analyses of legal and factual issues arising in a full range of criminal prosecutions, ensuring that properly-obtained convictions are upheld and that no defect in the trial-level proceedings unduly affects either the public or the accused. Appeals Bureau attorneys excel in the specialized research and advocacy skills demanded by the most highly respected appellate courts in the nation, appearing regularly in the New York Court of Appeals, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and, occasionally, the U.S. Supreme Court. Candidates should possess superior writing and oral advocacy skills. The Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor is responsible for felony narcotics investigations and prosecutions in the five boroughs of New York City. Founded in 1971, it is the only agency of its kind in the United States. Assistant District Attorneys are assigned to SNP by the five District Attorneys’ Offices and serve in one of three divisions: the Special Investigation Division, the Trial Division and the Alternative Sentencing Division. Created in response to a burgeoning heroin epidemic and a related spike in violent crime, SNP was granted broad authority under New York State Judiciary Laws to root out sophisticated narcotics trafficking organizations and track offenders across traditional jurisdictional boundaries. Since its inception, SNP has worked closely with local, state and federal law enforcement partners to improve the lives of New Yorkers by making neighborhoods safer. The office’s far-reaching cases target major trafficking networks that distribute narcotics in the city, across the United States and around the world. Renowned for its expertise in wiretap investigations, SNP uses cutting-edge electronic technology to identify and pursue members of criminal enterprises from street-level dealers to top suppliers. Recognizing the link between drugs and violence, the office also investigates gang- related activity.
