The game as played by such men as Norman E. Brookes, the late Anthony Wilding, William M. Johnston, and R. N. Williams is art. Every player who helps to attain a high degree of efficiency should have a clearly defined method of development and adhere to it. He should be certain that it is based on sound principles and, once assured of that, follow it, even though his progress seems slow and discouraging. I began tennis wrong. My strokes were wrong and my viewpoint clouded. I had no early training such as many of our American boys have at the pres- ent time. No one told me the importance of the fundamentals of the game, such as keeping the eye on the ball or correct body position and footwork.

Downloaded by [New York University] at 14:32 03 October 2016 A Social History of Tennis in Britain From its advent in the mid to late nineteenth century as a garden-party pastime to its development into a highly commercialised and professionalised high-performance sport, the history of tennis in Britain refl ects important themes in Britain’s social history. In the fi rst comprehensive and critical account of the history of tennis in Britain, Robert J. Lake explains how the game’s historical roots have shaped its contemporary structure, and how the history of tennis can tell us much about the history of wider British society. Since its emergence as a spare-time diversion for landed elites, the dominant culture in British tennis has been one of amateurism and exclusion, with tennis sitting alongside cricket and golf as a vehicle for the reproduction of middle-class values throughout wider British society in the twentieth and twenty-fi rst centuries. Consequently, the Lawn Tennis Association has been accused of a failure to promote inclusion or widen participation, despite steadfast efforts to develop talent and improve coaching practices and structures. Robert J. Lake examines these themes in the context of the global development of tennis and important processes of commercialisation and professional and social development that have shaped both tennis and wider society. Zato imamo hroničare i sportske novinare koji pisanjem o šampionima u prošlosti ne daju da se zaborave šampioni tog vremena. Upravo ovim radom žele se pomenuti svi šampioni ovako velikog turnira kao što je Rolan Garos koji se igra od 1891. godine. Uz sve muške osvajače od 1891. godine, poseban akcenat biće na “4 Musketara” koji su vladali 1920-ih i 1930-ih godina teniskim svijetom. Njih su činili Žak Briunon, Žan Borotra, Anri Koše i Rene Lakosta.
