As a violinist who studied at the Paris Conservatory, I have long been puzzled as to why so little had been written about something that everyone seems to take for granted—so called French style. I attacked this elusive issue from three perspectives: 1) a detailed look at performance directions; 2) comparisons among recordings by artists close to this period (Jacques Thibaud, Zino Francescatti, as well as contemporary French artists such as Philippe Graffin and Guillaume Sutre); and 3) interviews with three living French violinists (Olivier Charlier, Régis Pasquier, and Gérard Poulet) with strong ties to this tradition. After listening to countless historical recordings, I settled on three pivotal works that illustrate the emergence and full flowering of the French style: César Franck’s Violin Sonata (1886), Claude Debussy’s Violin Sonata (1917), and ii Maurice Ravel’s Tzigane: Rapsodie de Concert pour Violon et Piano (1924). Each of them presents specific challenges: notational and stylistic issues in Franck’s Violin Sonata, Debussy’s performance directions in his Violin Sonata, and notational and interpretive issues in Ravel’s Tzigane that led to a separate, orally-transmitted French tradition.

Yet despite this popularity, and the continuing influence of the school as reflected in the standard violin repertoire, many violinists today do not know what constitutes the Franco-Belgian violin style. Partly, this is due to a lack of contextual information; while many scholars have written about the history of the violin and violin playing techniques, there is currently very little literature comparing the principles and performance characters of specific violin schools.     FERNÁNDEZ, MILDRED “MILI,” D.M.A. The Violin Works of Joaquín Nin: A Catalogue and Violinistic Perspective (2013) Directed by Dr. John Salmon. 78 pp. The amount of works for violin by Spanish composers is vast, varied and unfortunately, largely a mystery. There are many pieces that should be part of the standard violin repertoire, but are not simply because of lack of exposure and lack of knowledge about them. The violin and piano works of Joaquín Nin y Castellanos (1879- 1949) are one of many such examples. In addition to providing a brief biography and overview of Nin’s general musical ideas and compositional style, this document contains an extended catalogue with all the available information on his violin works. This includes composition dates, running times, dedications, origins, stylistic characteristics, as well as violin specific difficulties and details for anyone interested in playing the pieces. At the end of the catalogue is also included a brief ranking of the pieces in order of difficulty. The pieces are all very varied in character, length and complexity, so included in the list are also performance placement suggestions. It is my hope that by providing this comprehensive document about Joaquín Nin’s violin music, it can not only serve as an incentive and useful source for anyone interested in learning the pieces, but also as a foundation which future researchers can build upon. Čaikovskio Maskvoje Abstract The current education system gives many pianists the opportunity to gain mastery of the instrument at an early age, to study in many countries and then to work with great teachers representing various piano traditions. Nevertheless, these benefits do not always create the necessary conditions for the emergence and formation of deep and powerful personalities. This assertion is reinforced by the fact that music critics often refer to the great artists of the old times through whom they establish the standard of piano performance. It seems that in our time quantity does not go along with quality and that the art of piano is invaded by a mass of impersonal artists; in other words, it seems as though all artists are very similar. Nowadays, major international competitions have become the primary instance which can create a hierarchy among the soloists and pianists and can select the best among them. There are often debates about the results of these competitions, but the decisions are usually final. These events provide an opportunity for young talents to enter the circle of professionals or, conversely, keep them away from the international scene. But after winning a particular competition, are these pianists able to meet long-term demands of the public? Three international piano competitions were chosen to attempt to answer this question: the Chopin Competition in Warsaw, the Mar- guerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris and the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow,1 which are among the most prestigious in the world.
