From ordinary teenager to superstar: The construction of a micro-celebrity status using the affordances of social media platforms Master Thesis: New media & digital culture Utrecht University, april 2017 Hanneke van de Put, 5695821 Supervisor, René Glas Second reader, Anne Kustritz Abstract The changing technological advances made by contemporary social media platforms have led to a situation where, in theory, everyone can become famous. This thesis explores the role of the affordances of social media platforms and the requirements for achieving such a do-it-yourself celebrity status, also known as micro-celebrity. First, it focuses on the concept of micro-celebrity; the course where individuals market themselves by adopting self- consciously constructed personas, like brands or celebrities, when presenting themselves to an audience or fan base. The analysis focuses on the affordances of the platforms Musical.ly, YouTube and Instagram and the notion of micro-celebrity as illustrated by three micro-celebrities: Baby Ariel, Jacob Sartorius and Loren Gray. The relationships between the technical affordances of three social media platforms and the use of self-representation techniques employed in the pursuit of micro-celebrity, viewed from a political economy perspective, are the central focus of this research. The analysis shows that both the platforms and micro-celebrities intelligently exploit the possibilities afford by each other in order to increase their (economic) capital. The author incorporated the assignment into a multimedia course in spring 2020, requiring students to find and tell a story on deadline through the popular video-sharing application. The majority of Americans ac- cess news through social media, and news organizations regularly require applicants to be fluent in digital storytelling. Whereas existing research assesses ways of integrating Twitter, Facebook and Instagram into reporting courses, this study strives to add to that research by exploring what students learned and what other benefits and concerns they identified by integrating TikTok into journalism curricula. Overall, students reported that the experience nurtured creativity, taught them how to think and act quickly in the field, and fostered collaboration. Despite well-publi- cized questions about the Chinese government’s influence on TikTok, few students expressed ethical concerns about journalists adding TikTok to their storytelling repertoire. Our forecast says yes. While we’ll always hold a special place in our hearts for this entitled and empowered group, it’s time to direct our focus to the rising class of culture creators: Gen Z. This group, currently around 6-21 years old, is claiming their influence on the world sooner than any generation before, wielding their power to effect change, drive new trends, and hand up their ideas to the rest of us. For crying out loud, they can barely drive and are already a force to be reckoned with! Parented by Gen X and Gen Y—two generations who couldn’t be more different—Gen Z is a distinct group with a personality all their own.
