Covell Learning to Persevere The Popular Teachings of Tendai Ascetics This paper introduces the teachings of three contemporary practitioners of Tendai Buddhism. I argue that the study of Japanese Buddhism has focused on doctrine and the past to the detriment of our understanding of contempo­ rary teaching.     From India to Japan Patterns of Transmission and Innovation in Japanese Buddhism KCJS, Spring 2018 Catherine Ludvik Class Time: Mon & Fri 1:10–2:40 Course Description This course takes students on a pan-Asian journey from India to Japan, via the Silk Road, through an exploration of the origins, transmission and assimilation of selected themes in Japanese Buddhism, and their subsequent developments within Japan. We trace the beginnings and metamorphoses of selected figures of the Japanese Buddhist pantheon, like the ancient Indian river goddess Sarasvatī who is worshipped in Japan as Benzaiten, and of certain ritual practices, like the Japanese goma fire ceremonies and their relationship to the Vedic homa rites of India, and we study about some of the illustrious Indian, Chinese and Japanese monks who functioned as their transmitters. By way of these themes, we examine patterns of transmission and innovation. The aim of this course is to provide a wider Asian context and a layered understanding for what students encounter in the many temples of Kyoto and nearby Nara, and in the numerous festivals and ceremonies that take place within them. Themes discussed in class will be amply illustrated through field trips to temples and festivals. Course Materials There is no single textbook. Readings are listed in the Course Outline below. Stone This article places Nichiren within the context of three larger scholarly issues: definitions of the new Buddhist movements of the Kamakura period; the reception of the Tendai discourse of original enlightenment (hongaku) among the new Buddhist movements; and new attempts, emerging in the medieval period, to locate “Japan ” in the cosmos and in history. It shows how Nicmren has been represented as either politically conservative or rad­ ical, marginal to the new Buddhism or its paradigmatic figv/re, depending' upon which model of “Kamakura new Buddhism” is employed. It also shows how the question of Nichiren,s appropriation of original enlighten­ ment thought has been influenced by models of Kamakura Buddnism emphasizing the polarity between “old” and “new,institutions and sug­ gests a different approach. Lastly, it surveys some aspects of Nichiren ys thinking- about “Japan ” for the light they shed on larger, emergent medieval discourses of Japan relioiocosmic significance, an issue that cuts across the “old Buddhism,,/ “new Buddhism ” divide. Revivalof RevivingSakyamuni's Buddhism and Nichiren'sView on the Lotus Sutra Nichiren (“ú˜@,1222-1282) respected Dengyo-Daishi Saicho (“`‹³‘åŽt•Å•Ÿ, 767-822), and he tried to map out a scheme for salvation, directly linking people to Sakyamuni Buddha, with the idea of 'Integrated Buddhism' by T'ien-t'ai Ta-shih Chih-i (“V‘ä‘åŽt’qûô, 538-597). Nichiren considered the line of teachers starting form the Buddha to Chih-i and then to Saicho (the Buddha Chih-i Saicho) as the lineage which transmitted the orthodox teaching of the Buddha, and he respected them as San-goku San-shi (ŽO•‘ŽlŽt, 'Three Teachers over the Three Countries' ). Later, he arrived at a conviction that he had established a foundation for the ten-thousand years of Mappo age (the Period of Degenerated Law,–––@, Saddharma-vipralopa), as he directly inherited the teaching of the three masters. Thus, he conveyed the con- viction to his followers, by mentioning the word San-goku Shi-shi (ŽO•‘ŽlŽt, 'Four Teachers over the Three Countries'), adding his own name to the end of the previous list. Though there are 700 years of temporal gap between Chih-i and Nichiren, Ni- chiren placed Chih-i's understanding of Buddhism at the base of his thought. Viewing it from formalistic standpoint, it may indicate that Nichiren inherited Tendai-Shu (“V‘ä•@). However, having the consciousness of honoring orthodox Tendai made him consider that Chib-i and Saicho were the inheritors of the Lotus Sutra only in Zobo age (the Period of Imitative Law, ‘œ–@, Saddharmapratirupaka).

    The Contribution of Buddhist Scholars toward the Friendship of China and Japan Yang Zengwen EING geographically close to each other, China and Japan have Bshared a history of amicable exchanges for over 2,000 years, which has had many important influences on the economy, politics, and culture of both countries. Since the normalization of the diplomatic relationship of the two countries in 1972, the governments of both China and Japan have placed great importance on the development of their bilateral rela- tionship, and have continuously developed their good relationship since then. In 1998, the leaders of the two countries agreed to a joint declara- tion to establish the concord for their peace and development. In 2008, the two countries further reached the Chinese-Japanese joint statement that promoted a full-scale strategic reciprocal relationship. It upheld a lofty long-term goal which aimed to accomplish a peaceful coexistence, a friendship from generation to generation, and a mutually beneficial collaboration for shared development.1 On the occasion of the academic conference “Modern Society and Religion” co-sponsored by the Institute of World Religions of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Institute of Oriental Phi- losophy in Japan, I wish to discuss the appropriate attitude and responsibility of Buddhist scholars in both countries for the sake of peaceful coexistence and ever-lasting friendship between both coun- tries from the view of a Buddhist researcher. Stone The Atsuhara Affair TheLotus Sutra, Persecution, and Religious Identity in the Early Nichiren Tradition In 1279, twenty peasants who were lay followers of the Buddhist teacher Nichiren were summarily arrested at Atsuhara in the Fuji district of Suruga province and were sent for trial to Kamakura, where three of them were beheaded. This incident is known in the history of Nichiren Buddhism as the Atsuhara persecution. The first part of this article outlines the circumstances of the persecution and the political and religious tensions that fueled it and considers how Nichiren was able to persuade his followers to remain steadfast in the face of a grave threat. The second part examines links between Nichiren’s interpretation of the persecution and larger themes in his teaching of exclusive devotion to the Lotus Sutra, especially that offering one’s life for the sutra’s sake guarantees one’s attainment of buddhahood.     Session 14 - October Worldwide Kosen-rufu and the Soka Gakkai — Chapter 3: Repudiating the Nichiren Shoshu Priesthood under Nikken Since its establishment, the Soka Gakkai has grounded itself completely on faith that is directly connected to Nichiren Daishonin. It has consistently taken action to spread the Daishonin’s Buddhist teachings to create happiness for all people and bring about world peace. However, a group emerged that sought to destroy this movement for kosen-rufu, and in doing so that group, known as the “Nikken sect,” revealed its true nature as a devilish function. The Nikken sect refers to the priesthood of the Nichiren Shoshu Buddhist school in its corrupt state under the leadership of Nikken Abe, who claimed to be the 67th in the lineage of its high priests. This sect has taken the position that its high priest, who is also its chief administrator, possesses absolute and uncontestable authority and power. In the more than quarter century since instigating what has become known as the “second priesthood issue” in 1990, the Nikken sect has betrayed the teachings and spirit of Nichiren Buddhism and has become a group given over to slander of the Buddhist Law. Though Nikken transferred the office of high priest to a successor, Nichinyo, in December 2005, the lineage he has passed on continues to be muddied by his slander of the Law. The Battle against Evil Functions In his treatise “On Establishing the Correct Teaching for the Peace of the Land,” Nichiren Daishonin writes, “Rather than offering up ten thousand prayers for remedy, it would be better simply to outlaw this one evil” (WND-1, 15) and “The only thing to do now is to abandon the evil ways and take up those that are good, to cut off this affliction at the source, to cut it off at the root” (WND-1, 17).
