Our Speakers this evening are Janet Segall and Ivana Mitchell. Thank you for joining us today! The call today will focus on mental health and chronic disease like pemphigus and pemphigoid Ivana Mitchell holds a Masters Degree in Social Work and is a Registered Social Worker in Toronto, Canada. She provides psychotherapy in a primary care clinic and in private practice, assisting youth and adults struggling with a wide spectrum of challenges including: abuse, trauma, loss, relationship problems, chronic illness, and mental illness. Ivana is a Certified Daring Way Facilitator, offering a psycho-educational workshop created by Dr. Brené Brown, aimed at helping individuals embrace vulnerability and live with connection, compassion, and courage. Her education and training came in handy when she was diagnosed with Pemphigus Vulgaris. Through personal and professional experience, Ivana is aware of the challenges that accompany chronic illness, as well as the mind, body, and soul practices that may assist and empower those with an autoimmune disorder to live a wholehearted life. Janet is the Founder of the IPPF. She was diagnosed in 1983 and started the Foundation in 1994 with the express purpose of giving people living with this very rare disease a place go to find information and others also living with pemphigus. Janet graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. After college she worked at Pilgrim State Mental Institution on Long Island. Upon moving to San Francisco she volunteered at the San Francisco Mental Health Department assisting the psychiatrist in the psychodrama group. She also worked at the Women’s Refuge in Berkeley, CA. -

His role in the resurrection of long neglected woodwind instruments of extreme register, his innovation as a solo woodwind performer, and his reassertion of the composer into what has traditionally been an improvisational form have placed him at the forefront of contemporary music for over five decades. Mr. Mitchell is a founding member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and the Trio Space. Additionally, Mr. Mitchell is the founder of the Creative Arts Collective, The Roscoe Mitchell Sextet, The Roscoe Mitchell Quartet, The Roscoe Mitchell Art Ensemble, The Sound Ensemble, The New Chamber Ensemble and the Note Factory. He has recorded over 100 albums and has written hundreds of compositions. His compositions range from classical to contemporary, from passionate and forceful improvisations to ornate orchestral music. His most recent recording, Discussions, was counted among “The 25 Best Classical Music Recordings of 2017” by the New York Times. Also, for five decades, he has designed the Percussion Cage, an elaborate percussion instrument consisting of instruments from around the world, as well as many found instruments. -

I'm your host, Whitney Johnson. Today our guest is Ellen Bennett, CEO and founder of Hedley and Bennett. In 2012, Ellen Bennett was a line cook and a professional kitchen. When her boss was about to order new aprons, she said, "I'll make them instead." Ellen started with 40 aprons. A decade later, Hedley and Bennett has revenue of more than 20 million dollars. They sell to over 4,000 restaurants, and their clients include Martha Stewart, Mario Batali and Alton Brown. Currently in the sweet spot of her entrepreneurial S curve, Ellen has written a delightful book titled Dream First, Details Later, the book she wishes she would have had as a first-time entrepreneur. Ellen describes herself as half English, half Mexican. I would describe her as 100 percent disruptor. Whitney Johnson: Ellen, thanks for joining us. Ellen Bennett: Thank you, Whitney. Whitney Johnson: Tell us a little bit about the title of your book. Why did you title it the way that you did? Ellen Bennett: When I started Hedley and Bennett, I really wanted to find a book that resonated with me and it was really hard. Everything was very much black and white and not super descriptive, if you will. It was very businesslike, and I really wanted something that made me feel like I could do it and I could leap out into the world and make it happen, and it didn't exist. -

The other is m5b, the legato string fill that occurs just twice in each refrain (p. 162). m5a: appoggiaturas Structural description Please first note the difference between APPOGGIATURA , a ‘lean- Frn04-MusemAnal2.fm. 2017-11-07, 13:48 2017-11-07, Frn04-MusemAnal2.fm. ing note’ (from Italian appoggiarsi = to lean, ®l), and ACCIACCATURA [], a ‘smudged’ or ‘bruised’ note (schiaccare = to bruise, crush, ¬l ). There are many appoggiaturas in Fernando, no acciaccaturas. Ex. 65. Occurrences of m5a appoggiaturas in Fernando, b.14-15, 27-28, 63-67 and 22-23, 34-37, 73-74: (a) solo vocal; (b) written as euroclassical grace notes; (c) vocals in parallel thirds; (d) flutes in interlude. Each variant of museme 5a in example 65 consists of between two and seven consecutive pairs of legato-slurred neighbouring notes chained together in scalar sequence. Each pair of slurred notes in each sequence constitutes an appoggiatura. Except for example 65d, Fernando’s m5a is an entirely vocal fea- ture, solo in verse 1 (ex. 65a), in parallel thirds in verses 2 and 3 (ex. 65c). Ex- ample 65b sounds exactly the same as 65a: alternative notation is presented merely to show that note 2 in each pair was, in eighteenth-century euroclas- sical circles, heard as tonally more significant (the ‘l’ in ‘®l’), even though it is articulated as a weaker ‘offbeat’ preceded by the appoggiatura’s stronger 1. -

west coast music Encore Please find attached the Encore Band song list for your review. SPECIAL DANCES for Weddings: Please note that we will need to have your special dance requests, (I.E. First Dance, F/D Dance, etc) FOUR WEEKS prior to your event so that we can confirm the band will be able to perform the song(s) and so that we have time to locate sheet music and audio of the song(s). In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is needed, this gives us time to properly prepare the music. Clients are not obligated to submit a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and/or avoided. If you desire the highest degree of control (asking the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we would ask for a minimum 80 requests from the band’s songlist. Goodman "It's disconcerting that people who behaved so badly in war can behave so admirably in defeat."1 Neither any historical document nor any scholarly account has been able to recapture the mood of Japanese-American grassroots interaction in 1945 in the way that Mrs. Yumi Goto does in Those Days in Muramatsu. As one who was there in Japan as a member of the American forces in 1945-1946 and as a trained historian of Japan, I feel especially qualified to evaluate the remarkable evocation of an era which Mrs. Goto recounts. Certainly memories dim and memory plays tricks on all of us, but, since Mrs. Goto recorded her experiences contemporaneously, one feels the profound veracity of her writing. Moreover, the most unusual phenomenon of a Japanese woman purposefully recording her impressions in English so that some day they might be read by Americans reinforces her credibility. I am particularly pleased to attest to my great personal delight as well as my intense response when Mrs. Goto's work first came to my attention. Indeed, it was her son, Kenichi, the distinguished scholar of modern Indonesia and my colleague and friend of many years, who was kind enough to share his mother's manuscript with me. In fact, he himself had not known of the existence of Those Days in Muramatsu until about ten years ago at the time of Mrs.
