The Japanese Sake Bible: Everything You Need to Know About Great Sake - with | eBay BALL tampering is one of the most heinous crimes that can be committed in the gentleman's game known as cricket, but what does it actually mean? Umpires Darrell Hair, right, and Billy Doctrove, chat after about possible ball tampering during the fourth and final Test match between England and Pakistan at London's Oval. Well, technically, ball tampering is when a bowler or fielder alters the ball in such a way that its aerodynamics change. But to save the punters out there from all that mumbo jumbo, here's a few ways a ball can be tampered with:. Spit is perfectly fine though. A common way to get more swing on the ball is to roughen up one side. When one side of the ball is more harsh than the other, air can pass over the smooth surface of the ball much quicker giving it extra movement. During the game, you'll see fielders spitting on the ball and rubbing up and down the length of their pants, which is fine. The ball can be polished without the use of anything artificial. It can be dried with a towel if it's wet and can be cleaned of mud as long as an umpire supervises. Pretty much anything else is illegal. Inthen England captain Michael Atherton was accused of rubbing dirt on the ball during a Test match against South Africa at Lord's. TV cameras busted him reaching into his pocket and then rubbing something on the ball. But when called up on it, Atherton said he used dirt to dry his hands. He eventually was forced to pay a few thousand dollars in fines. Again TV cameras helped, picking up Tendulkar scuffing the seam on the ball. Things got quickly out of control though and after racism allegations the ICC revoked the status of the match as a Test. Perhaps one of the most famous ball tampering incidents in cricket was in Pakistan was playing England and TV cameras caught the umpires having a little chat about the condition of the quarter seam. It looked like it had been altered, so England was given an extra five runs. Well this didn't sit well with Pakistan and they refused to come out on to the field after the tea break. In the end the umpires just awarded the W to England and the Test was all over. More recently, The Cricket Pocket Bible: Everything You Need to Know About the World of Cricket two years The Cricket Pocket Bible: Everything You Need to Know About the World of Cricket, Shahid Afridi, was banned for two T20 international matches against Australia. He was caught red-handed biting the cricket ball in a bizarre attempt to readjust the seam. The ball was just replaced and his best defence was that he was trying to smell the ball. • The Temptations of Ball Tampering: Steve Smith's Australian Team
The Temptations of Ball Tampering: Steve Smith’s Australian Team in South Africa By Dr. Binoy Kampmark Theme: History Asia-Pacific Research, March 25, 2018 There was an audacity about it, carried out with amateurish callowness. As it turned out Australian batsman Cameron Bancroft, besieged and vulnerable, had been egged on by Australian cricket captain Steve Smith and the Australian leadership to do the insufferable: tamper with the ball. Before the remorseless eagle eyes of modern cameras, Bancroft, in the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town, was detected possessing yellow adhesive tape intended to pick up dirt and particles that would, in turn, be used on the ball’s surface. This, it was assumed, was intended to give Smith’s team an advantage over an increasingly dominantSouth Africa. The reaction from the head of Cricket Australia, John Sutherland, was one of distress. “It’s a sad day for Australian cricket.” Australian veteran cricketers effused horror and disbelief. Former captainMichael Clarke wished this was “a bad dream”. One of the greatest purveyors of slow bowling in the game’s history,Shane Warne, expressed extreme disappointment “with the pictures I saw on our coverage here in Cape Town. If proven the alleged ball tampering is what we all think it is – then I hope Steve Smith (Captain) [and] Darren Lehmann (Coach) do the press conference to clean this mess up!” Indignation, not to mention moral and ethical shock, should be more qualified. This, after all, is a murky area of cricket. An injunction against ball tampering may well be enforced but players have been engaged in affecting the shape and constitution of that red cherry since the game took hold on the English greens.

  • In the Early Years, All Matters Pertaining to Cricket Umpiring
THE WEST INDIES CRICKET UMPIRES’ASSOCIATION 1962 – 2012 – VIVIAN JOHNSON & JOHNNY GAYLE INTRODUCTION In the early years, all matters pertaining to cricket umpiring throughout the Caribbean were dealt with by the governing body of West Indies Cricket, the West Indies Cricket Board of Control through it various territorial affiliates. As the years passed, it became evident that a need existed for the establishment of a body whereby affairs of an umpiring nature would be properly addressed, which would ensure the development of umpiring, create a harmonious relationship among all participants of the game, promote the dignity of the office of umpiring, and generally to advocate in the interest of umpires. In order to accomplish these objectives, various territorial associations were established throughout the Caribbean. In 1946, Jamaica took the initiative with the blessing of the Jamaica Cricket Board of Control and formed the Jamaica Cricket Umpires’ Association, under the Presidency of Norman A.D. Tappin – J.P., Chartered Accountant, making the organization the second oldest umpiring Association in the world, surpassed only by the Victoria Association in Australia. This was followed by the formation of the Barbados Association in the early 1950’s, the Guyana Association and the Trinidad & Tobago Umpires Council in 1953. Interestingly, the British to whom the world is indebted for the invention of such a noble game did not form its Association of Cricket Umpires until March 1953. But there was no regional Association in existence in the West Indies which would bond the various organizations and their members together, and so broaden their input in the overall development of cricket as it relates to umpiring.

The Pakistani captain persuaded two of his bowlers to bowl illegitimate deliveries at precise times of the match while he batted out a specific over without scoring a run. Gamblers with inside knowledge bet profitably on these particular occurrences. This was a watershed moment in international cricket that saw corrupt players swiftly exposed unlike the earlier conviction of the former and now deceased South African captain Hansie Cronje whose corruption was uncovered much

  • Justice Qayyum's Report
PART I BACKGROUND TO INQUIRY 1. Cricket has always put itself forth as a gentleman’s game. However, this aspect of the game has come under strain time and again, sadly with increasing regularity. From BodyLine to Trevor Chappel bowling under-arm, from sledging to ball tampering, instances of gamesmanship have been on the rise. Instances of sportsmanship like Courtney Walsh refusing to run out a Pakistani batsman for backing up too soon in a crucial match of the 1987 World Cup; Imran Khan, as Captain calling back his counterpart Kris Srikanth to bat again after the latter was annoyed with the decision of the umpire; batsmen like Majid Khan walking if they knew they were out; are becoming rarer yet. Now, with the massive influx of money and sheer increase in number of matches played, cricket has become big business. Now like other sports before it (Baseball (the Chicago ‘Black-Sox’ against the Cincinnati Reds in the 1919 World Series), Football (allegations against Bruce Grobelar; lights going out at the Valley, home of Charlton Football club)) Cricket Inquiry Report Page 1 Cricket faces the threat of match-fixing, the most serious threat the game has faced in its life. 2. Match-fixing is an international threat. It is quite possibly an international reality too. Donald Topley, a former county cricketer, wrote in the Sunday Mirror in 1994 that in a county match between Essex and Lancashire in 1991 Season, both the teams were heavily paid to fix the match. Time and again, former and present cricketers (e.g. Manoj Prabhakar going into pre-mature retirement and alleging match-fixing against the Indian team; the Indian Team refusing to play against Pakistan at Sharjah after their loss in the Wills Trophy 1991 claiming matches there were fixed) accused different teams of match-fixing.

RACE AND CRICKET: THE WEST INDIES AND ENGLAND AT LORD’S, 1963 by HAROLD RICHARD HERBERT HARRIS Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Arlington in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT ARLINGTON August 2011 Copyright © by Harold Harris 2011 All Rights Reserved To Romelee, Chamie and Audie ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS My journey began in Antigua, West Indies where I played cricket as a boy on the small acreage owned by my family. I played the game in Elementary and Secondary School, and represented The Leeward Islands’ Teachers’ Training College on its cricket team in contests against various clubs from 1964 to 1966. My playing days ended after I moved away from St Catharines, Ontario, Canada, where I represented Ridley Cricket Club against teams as distant as 100 miles away. The faculty at the University of Texas at Arlington has been a source of inspiration to me during my tenure there. Alusine Jalloh, my Dissertation Committee Chairman, challenged me to look beyond my pre-set Master’s Degree horizon during our initial conversation in 2000. He has been inspirational, conscientious and instructive; qualities that helped set a pattern for my own discipline. I am particularly indebted to him for his unwavering support which was indispensable to the inclusion of a chapter, which I authored, in The United States and West Africa: Interactions and Relations , which was published in 2008; and I am very grateful to Stephen Reinhardt for suggesting the sport of cricket as an area of study for my dissertation.
