  • Breaking the Spell: Religion As a Natural Phenomenon
Additional Praise for Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon "Breaking the Spell continues to spark controversy with its Darwinian take on the all-too-human urge to believe.. .. Dawkins, Dennett, and Harris argue that religious beliefs, particularly those derived literally and selectively from religious texts, can lead to behavior that is dubi ously moral according to more universal principles of right and wrong. The killing of innocents in the name of holy war is only the most obvious instance. Dennett extends a conciliatory hand to believers so long as they are willing to subject any purportedly God- given moral edict 'to the full light of reason, using all the evidence at our command.'" — U.S. News & World Report "Rich and rewarding.. .the main business of the book is to give a sci entific account of how religion may have developed among creatures such as us... Dennett here does an admirable job of dismantling the common (yet almost never argued for) prejudice that those who be lieve in the supernatural have some sort of moral superiority." —San Francisco Chronicle "In Breaking the Spell, the blasting rhetoric of Dawkins and Harris is absent, replaced by provocative, often humorous examples and thought experiments." —Wired "Mr. Dennett's main argument is that religious belief—especially in the United States—is often sheltered from the cut and thrust of intel lectual argument and scientific scrutiny, and it should not be." —The Economist "Dennett describes the various stages of the long historical evolution of religion, beginning with primitive tribal myths and rituals, and ending with the market driven evangelical megachurches of modern America.

IN THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE MIDDLE DISTRICT OF NORTH CAROLINA RYAN ANDREWS, SCOTT CRAWFORD, ) and MARK PERRY, ) ) Plaintiffs, ) ) 1:13cv408 v. ) ) CHRISTOPHER ADAM DAUGHTRY, ) ) Defendant. ) MEMORANDUM OPINION AND ORDER THOMAS D. SCHROEDER, District Judge. One of the more popular and prolific songwriters of the twentieth century, Sammy Cahn, once wrote that love was “lovelier the second time around.” BING CROSBY, The Second Time Around, lyrics by Sammy Cahn, music by Jimmy Van Heusen, in HIGH TIME (Bing Crosby Prod. 1960). This case puts the lyric to the test in the context of a contemporary songwriter’s second attempt at federal removal jurisdiction. Plaintiffs Ryan Andrews, Scott Crawford, and Mark Perry (collectively, “Plaintiffs”) are suing their former bandmate, Defendant Christopher Adam Daughtry (“Daughtry”), to recover profits derived from certain musical works. The action originated in state court, was timely removed to this court, and then remanded for lack of subject matter jurisdiction. (Doc. 24 Case 1:13-cv-00408-TDS-LPA Document 25 Filed 01/15/14 Page 1 of 19 in case 1:12cv441.)1 After some discovery and motion practice in state court, Daughtry filed an answer that asserted counterclaims under the Copyright Act, 17 U.S.C. § 101 et seq. (“Copyright Act”). He removed the action a second time to this court, premising jurisdiction on 28 U.S.C. § 1454 and the presence of a federal question in the counterclaims. (Doc. 1.) Plaintiffs move to remand the action on the grounds that jurisdiction is lacking under section 1454 and Daughtry’s removal was nevertheless untimely.

  • Stevie's Salas the Bio
Stevie's Salas The Bio A guitar player, writer, producer, and composer, Stevie Salas has recorded on over 70 different albums with artists as diverse as George Clinton, Justin Timberlake, Buddy Miles, T.I., Mick Jagger, and Rod Stewart. Having sold over two million solo albums around the world, Stevie has been cited as one of the top 50 guitarists of all time. Dreaming of a career in music, Stevie left the small town of Oceanside, California in 1985. Eight months later he was discovered by funk music legend George Clinton as the lead guitarist for Clinton’s albums. Stevie received his first major label producer credit with “Was (Not Was)” when he co-produced the UK hit “Out Come the Freaks” from the Album “What up Dog?” Rolling Stone Magazine listed “What up Dog?” as one of the top 100 records of the decade. In 1988, Stevie was asked to join Rod Stewart on a world tour as lead guitarist. Skipping cities in a private jet to sold-out stadiums led to Stevie signing the largest record deal Island Records had ever paid for a new artist. Stevie’s first record, “Colorcode,” is still a cult classic in the UK and Europe, and his second solo album, “Back from the Living,” ousted the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith for “Best Album” in Japan. An accomplished composer, Stevie is credited with providing the score for several films including Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure and the 2009 film Darfur. Over 50 of Stevie’s compositions have been released on major labels.
