Courses Taught Creighton University (EOTD) OTD 386/POTD 386: Occupational therapy students will participate in a 3-week cross-cultural experience in the Dominican Republic focusing on the aspects of occupational therapy treatment in an international setting. A major focus of the experience will be exploration of the role of occupational therapy in an underserved global health setting utilizing the tenets of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Students will engage in cultural exploration of the Dominican culture utilizing the ICF and provide health-related education to multiple community partners. Implementation of treatment, patient education, reflection and discussion are the main methods used to promote student learning during the experience. OTD 601: The focus of this course is to disseminate findings from an individually design scholarly project under the direction and guidance of a faculty mentor. Students will complete a professional oral presentation.

Creighton University (POTD) POTD 500: Introduction to Clinical Doctoral Studies This course provides foundational information and skills for engaging in the post professional distance OTD program. Emphasis is on understanding the expectations and purpose of professional doctoral education; developing proficiency with computer hardware, software, and programs; demonstrating basic literature search strategies; developing professional writing skills; developing a plan of study; and building a learning community POTD 553: Introduction to Inquiry. This course is the first of a series of research courses. Emphasis of this course will be placed on developing critical research consumers and building a solid foundation in research. This course will examine evidence-based practice, explore the relationship among theory, research and practice and gain a thorough understanding of the research process. Both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies will be introduced and students will begin to understand numerous research designs. Critical knowledge and skills in research will be highlighted. Research literature in occupational therapy will be critically examined. POTD 554: Research Proposal The focus of this course is the development of a methodologically sound research proposal. Students will identify a research problem, formulate researchable questions; select a research design; quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods; that is best suited to answer the research questions. Both quantitative and qualitative data analyses will be discussed and students will apply such knowledge and skills in developing research proposals. The IRB process will be reviewed and implements for developed research proposals. Through proposal development, students will gain competence in scientific inquiry. POTD 555: Research Implementation The research proposals developed in the Research Proposal course will be implemented in this course. Emphasis is placed on the first-hand experience of the research process (e.g., recruitment of participants, data collection, analysis). Students will critically analyze and solve problems encountered during the proposal implementation process, which will be closely monitored by the course instructor to ensure research integrity. POTD 556: Manuscript Writing A scholarly written research manuscript is expected of students at the end of this course. POTD 580: Professional Trajectory Drawing on the understanding of occupation, professional practice, and professional identity and leadership from field and classroom experiences, students develop learning objectives to support a personal trajectory toward transformation of practice. These objectives will be carried out during the Professional Rotations. POTD 590: Doctoral Experiential Component Students constructed this professional experience by carrying out their personal learning objectives identified in POTD 580 Professional Trajectory. Course objectives move from personal and professional transformation toward the transformation of practice. During this experience, students are expected to function beyond the competencies of entry-level therapists. A total of 16 credit hours of Post Professional Rotation are required for graduation (unless waiver applications have been approved during POTD 580 Professional Trajectory). Number of credit hours assigned to each experience is based on learning objectives and approval by instructor.

University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse (MS OT) OT 530/531: Occupational Performance Analysis This course examines key concepts used in the description and analysis of occupational performance. This form, function, and meaning of occupations will be explored in relation to performance areas, process skills, activity and occupational configurations, client factors, and contextual issues. Task analysis, selection and grading of activity, the teaching/learning process, compensatory techniques, and occupation as therapeutic ends and means will be explored and applied in relation to the design and implementation of treatment with various populations in traditional and non-traditional settings. OT 640: Assistive Technology This course will refine skills in clinical decision making and task analysis, grading, adaptive equipment fabrication, and the therapeutic use of high and low technology in OT treatment. Computer technology and specific tool use will be emphasized. OT 641: Health Care Systems This course is designed to offer further depth in relation to advocacy skills, which will be examined and practiced as part of the change process in the contexts of client care and professional leadership. OT 661: Applied Mental Illness This course will include the study and hands on application of occupational dysfunction as a result of mental and cognitive dysfunction. Models and frames of reference utilized in the treatment of individuals with mental health diagnoses will be examined and critiqued. Group process, assessment and treatment techniques, and documentation specifically for this population will be explored. OT750/751: Scholarly Practice II: Occupational Therapy Research This course is the second in the series of research skills courses. It is designed to help the students apply previously learned statistical information to occupational therapy literature. Students will become familiar with research methodologies typically used in occupational therapy and will become skilled consumers of scholarly literature through extensive reading, analysis, and discussion of occupational therapy literature. Topics covered include reading scholarly articles, literature searching strategies, research methods, ethical research, and application/interpretation of statistical data. OT 760: Scholarly Practice III: Research Seminar This course is the third in the series of five Scholarly Practice courses. It is designed as a seminar course that provides the opportunity for students to participate in research data collection and analysis. Students will participate in various data collection exercises through lab experiences, and will create a culminating paper and poster that describes their process and results OT 775: Critical Analysis of Practice I This is the first of a two-part experience with problem-based learning. Working in small groups students will use critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and reflective practice to process case studies. These cases will be typical to occupational therapy practice and will require synthesis of material from several courses. Problems may relate to the occupational therapy process, ethical issues, supervision, etc. All cases will develop critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills that will be required of occupational therapists practicing in today’s health care arena. OT 776/777: Occupations and Interventions: Older Adults Occupational performance in the aging population will be explored with emphasis on the impact of disease or injury in the older adult population from diverse backgrounds. Specific focus will be on analysis of sociocultural, environmental, and personal life roles of the elderly as well as those disease/dysfunction processes that frequently impact this population. Students will practice the occupational therapy process of observation, evaluation, analysis, and treatment of this population during the laboratory component of this course. OT 785/786: Adult Clinical Practice This course is a synthesis of all courses from the curriculum. Students are given the opportunity to implement the OT process, select, administer, and interpret evaluation tools, develop and implement treatment interventions, practice clinical reasoning, measure outcomes, and improve documentation skills while working with adults with chronic conditions. Students will integrate theory, evidence, and clinical skills while being client-centered and occupation-based through all aspects of the OT process.
