Aoyagi Eisuke: Aikido doesn't have competitive matches, so what is the objective of training? How can we decide our training goals? Inaba Sensei: It was one of Master Ueshiba's discerning suggestions that Aikido should not have competitive matches. One explanation is that he didn’t want to make a champion or "number one" person, and in addition he thought it more important that individuals reach their own highest level. But if we think about it deeply, this is probably not the only or main reason. The question is what kind of competitive matches you can have if you want to practice a Bujutsu (Ṋ⾡:martial arts) which is really useful in life’s battles. A long time ago in Japan, if you lost a match, this was shameful. So you wanted to avoid half-hearted matches, and wanted to die like a brave man in a fight rather than getting injured. It was either win or die. That leads to considering what kind of competitive matches are possible if you fight with a real sword. This would be the equivalent of having competitive matches with guns nowadays. I wonder how effective "sporting" martial arts matches under specific rules would be in a real battle? In a sporting championship match you fight within a specified time of period, in a predetermined place, under fixed rules. Even if you win the match, how much influence or impact will that have on the battles you encounter in your life? It’s difficult to say whether or not it's better to have competitive matches.

However, although the large and game American squad gave it their all, the out- come was little changed as they were knocked around by the visiting European I teams this time! There were several upsets in the competition, but the most astounding was the dominance of Estonian middleweight Aap Uspenski, who won both the Middleweight and Openweight competitions, defeating opponents twice his weight in the process. American men did very well in the Lightweight class, but failed to even medal in the Middleweight or Heavyweight, although middleweight Troy Collins did grab the Openweight bronze medal. While most Americans are familiar with Japanese professional sumo, where there are no weight classes, international amateur sumo has changed the face (and body) of the sport. With three weight classes for men and three for women, we can watch ath- letes of all sizes and genders compete. Nevertheless, the Openweight class, where all sizes compete together, proved the most entertaining. Tom was a decorated Marine veteran, a direct student of O’Sensei Hohan Soken & the Head of Shorin Ryu Matsumura Bushi Jutsu. His ideas also contributed to the development of the Marine Corps close combat training program in the mid 1990’s; From Arizona, Shihan Dana Abbott’s Brother, Kennith Abbott Jr. passed on November 11th ; while Suro Jason Inay’s Uncle also passed in November; & lastly on December 12th, our member in England, GM Richard Hopkins’ Brother, Eddie Hopkins passed away from Leukemia. May the good Lord look over these dearly departed & may their loved ones be comforted by the Hand of God…..In health news, GM Ted Gambordella of Texas is dealing with prostrate Cancer & is in need of assistance to help with his medical surgery & expenses.

Abstract Folk sports are the countertype of modern sports: invented traditions, bolstered by tangible ritual and intangible myth, played by the common folk in order to express a romantic ethnic identity. Like other cultural forms, traditional sports and games around the world are becoming marginalized in the face of modernization and globalization. In 2003, UNESCO ratified the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in an attempt to counter such trends of cultural homogenization. As elements of intangible cultural heritage, folk sports now fall under the auspices of UNESCO safeguarding policies.

Flint* Department of Molecular Biology, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ 08544, USA Abstract Several of the functions of the human adenovirus type 5 E1B 55 kDa protein are fulfilled via the virus-specific E3 ubiquitin ligase it forms with the viral E4 Orf6 protein and several cellular proteins. Important substrates of this enzyme have not been identified, and other functions, including repression of transcription of interferon-sensitive genes, do not require the ligase. We therefore used immunoaffinity purification and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry of lysates of normal human cells infected in parallel with HAdV-C5 and E1B 55 kDa protein-null mutant viruses to identify specifically E1B 55 kDa-associated proteins. The resulting set of > 90 E1B-associated proteins contained the great majority identified previously, and was enriched for those associated with the ubiquitin-proteasome system, RNA metabolism and the cell cycle. We also report very severe inhibition of viral genome replication when cells were exposed to both specific or non-specific siRNAs and interferon prior to infection.
