GRUINARD LODGE | Buchanan Smithy | In any other home, the authentic Adam fireplace would be the focal point.

No great country house in Georgian Britain was complete without an Adam fireplace. Reclaimed from an old nearby home, this alabaster on pine Adam fireplace makes an impressive feature. Except at Gruinard Lodge, even when the open fire is blazing, it can be a little overlooked. But then, when you can sit and watch the sun set over Loch Lomond, it’s little wonder. While people travel the world over for such an incredible view, you can appreciate it from your sofa.

GRUINARD LODGE | Buchanan Smithy | Worship the sun or worship the views.

The sun lounge is arguably the current owners’ favourite room. And it’s easy to see why. It’s the perfect place to enjoy your first morning coffee and drink in the views of Loch Lomond, Gartocharn, and Duncryne Hill. Late September here sees the arrival of geese on the shores of the loch for the winter. Every morning, hundreds fly over Gruinard to feed on the neighbouring grassy pastures and do so again at dusk to return to the loch. While many people travel miles to marvel at such sight and sounds, you can enjoy it from the comfort of your home. And, as the geese leave in March, the house martins arrive in April for the summer, performing their beautiful flight patterns over the home. The sun lounge also offers direct access to the patio through double doors, so when the temperature drops or the rain starts, many a barbeque party has finished up in here.

GRUINARD LODGE | Buchanan Smithy | Enjoy the rhododendrons, Loch Lomond and open access to the kitchen and sunroom for starters.

There’s lots to love about this dining room. It’s bright and spacious and, since it offers direct access to the kitchen, you can cook and be convivial at the same time. From here you can access not only the kitchen but the sun room and lounge too. Oh, and did we mention the garden and loch views?

At Gruinard, the spacious kitchen is a great place to gather and share your day. At its heart, the much-loved AGA. There’s also an integral fridge freezer, dishwasher and microwave and, tucked away, just off the kitchen, you’ll find a utility area that has a washing machine and wine chiller and direct access to the garden so it’s easy to gather in your homegrown salads, vegetables, fruits and herbs from the raised beds or neighbouring budding orchard area. Space to play. Delightfully, Gruinard, offers lots of lovely little nooks and crannies for you to lose yourself (when you’re not doing that in the extensive grounds). Whether it’s the area in the hall, tucked under the stairs, that can house a piano or the quirky little library area on the upper floor. Off the entrance hall, there’s a toilet and cloakroom where you can handily hang jackets above the radiator to get them dry and toasty. Space to work. The upper hall makes for a perfect study in one part and a sedate seating area for guests to enjoy their own space in another.

There’s built-in wardrobes and a spacious en suite. Rise and shine. Who would want to draw the curtains with such uninterrupted views of the hills and loch?

A double room with fitted cupboards and sitting area outside.

Fit for a kingsize with fitted cupboards too. Relahhhx. With a spacious enclosed shower, indulgently large bath and underfloor heated tiles, this ground floor family bathroom is bliss.

Yours. All yours. More family sized than en suite, remember, since it’s just off the master bedroom, this is just yours. It also has underfloor heating and is accessed through a delightful arched doorway. A Princess bath with fairytale views. This upper floor bathroom’s Velux window means you can look at the treetops or gaze up to the stars; so you can bathe in sunlight or moonlight. The current owners’ granddaughters love it. Adjacent, there’s a WC with sink to one side and an additional room for drying laundry on the other. Celebrate the Great Outdoors.

No matter the season, this one acre garden never fails to delight and surprise. Whether it’s when the avenue of pink and white roses are in full bloom, or when the fruit trees ripen with their first harvest, or the vegetables and salads can be harvested and taken straight from garden to kitchen. Azaleas, rhododendrons, bluebells, daffodils and wild flowers all flourish here, creating a riot of colour. Children will love the grounds – hide and seek in a garden like this could go on for some time and there’s many an adventure to be had here – tree climbing, bug hunting, den building and bird spotting. There are plenty of places you can relax at Gruinard; the garden swing where you can smell the azaleas, the day patio by the nesting blue tit box, the seated barbeque area sheltered by bamboo and honeysuckle or the patio lounge area with loch views framed by the twin eucalyptus. Regular visitors include woodpeckers, woodcock, ducks, cuckoo and owls. There’s also a double garage which incorporates additional storage, a WC and utility area with room enough for two freezers, as well as a further single garage with an adjacent greenhouse, kennels, a coal shed and wood store.
