Cover image: Pictured is a male house sparrow (Passer domesticus) on Lundy Island, . Laboratory studies of many species have found that the offspring of old parents exhibit reduced fitness, yet the effects of parental age on offspring fitness had not been dem- onstrated in a natural population. Julia Schroeder et al. tracked the reproductive fitness of house sparrows on Lundy Island. The authors found that birds with old parents produced fewer offspring annually than birds with young parents. The finding suggests that reproduction with older partners may confer a fitness cost, rather than a benefit, as previously thought. See the article by Schroeder et al. on pages 4021–4025.
