Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race P.O Box 870800 • Wasilla, Alaska 99687-0800 907.376.5155 (main) • 907.373.6998 (facsimile) www.iditarod.com FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT: Erin McLarnon, Communications Director Voice: 907-376-5155, ext. 115 [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 2013 JUNIOR IDITAROD TO BEGIN THIS SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23rd Jr. Iditarod will be taking place this Saturday, February 23rd at 10 AM AK Time leaving from Knik Lake, Mile 13, Knik Goose Bay Road, Wasilla and ending on Sunday, February 24th at Willow Lake, Willow Community Center, Willow Wasilla, Alaska – Wednesday, February 19, 2013 – the thirty-sixth running of the Jr. Iditarod is set to get underway this Saturday, February 23rd at 10 AM AK Time from Knik Lake, Mile 13, Knik Goose Bay Road, Wasilla. Lynden is the major sponsor of this event. The thirteen Jr. Iditarod competitors, listed below will race to Yentna Station where they will overnight. Then on Sunday, February 24th, teams will leave in the order they arrived and race to the finish line on Willow Lake. The race course is approximately 150-miles. The winner of this race will have the honor of leaving 4th Avenue in Anchorage, Alaska on March 2nd wearing the 2013 Iditarod Honorary Musher Bib #1. Jones, KL1RK As the famous song goes, "I did the Iditarod Trail." Now that the fun and excitement is over, it's time to get back to business! There are many stories and even more pictures to be shared from the trail. Be sure to attend the April General Membership Meeting as we share the adventures from stormy THREE MONTHS TO FIELD DAY weather to runaway dog teams that make the Iditarod so much fun. Set-up is on Friday evening, June 24th. We are hoping to get Kincaid Park again (same location as last year). The HF “competition” begins Saturday morning, June 25th at 1000 (local), running 24 hours until Sunday, June 26th at 1000 (local). Field Day Rules are available on the ARRL website. This year the emphasis is on young operators and we can earn bonus points by using operators 18 years or younger. Assuming Red Cross participation, we will again be operating Class 2F. We are looking for “King Comms” for each bonus point category. Three thousand miles from his physical therapist and doctors, Nathan, a nine-year-old boy living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, will experience the role of Alaskan musher and the immense power and speed behind a sled dog team in the Iditarod. With the help of his friends at the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Alaska & Washington and Donlin Gold, Nathan will live a week-long Alaskan experience, including the highly coveted role of IditaRider. As an IditaRider, Nathan will travel the first leg of the race, approximately 11 miles through Anchorage, with musher Bill Pinkham of Colorado. “Donlin Gold is proud to honor the Alaskan tradition of gold mining and mushing in support of the Iditarod,” says Donlin Gold General Manager Stan Foo. “The Iditarod is a competitive race like no other in the world.
