Prof. Tülay Artan Keywords: Literature, Translation, Alexander romance From Antiquity to modernity, Alexander lived his second life as a legendary hero in the Alexander Romances composed around the third century CE that quickly promulgated all over the world and its languages from East to West. Alexander the Great is discussed in several cultures including Muslim literature, both Arabic and Persian. One of the most important representation of the Alexander Romance is in 10th century, Firdawsi’s Shahnama that presents some details about Alexander the Great. In the Ottoman Empire, one the earliest accounts are found in Ahmedi’s work, İskendername. Ahmedi was the greatest poet of the late fourteenth century and also of Turkish Divan Literature and one of the crucial representations of Alexander Romance tradition. This thesis is firstly to investigate the scholar Ahmedi and his source of information on Alexander the Great. Briefly, what was the reason for Ahmedi Alexander Romance tradition appearance in the Islamic world? Secondly, in the fourteenth century Ahmedi authored the first İskendername, which later became a tradition and there are receptions of the Ahmedi’s İskendername by Ahmed-i Rıdvan and Figani. In 16th century these works were written and presented and one of the parts of this thesis is investigates the translation issue of these texts. Bu sebeple, bu tez çalışması öncelikle Ahmedi’nin İskendernâme’sinin bilgi kaynaklarını inceleyecektir. Özetle, Ahmedi’nin İslam Dünyasındaki İskendernâme geleneğinde kendini gösterme sebebi nedir? 14. yüzyılda Ahmedi’nin İskendernâme’sinin ardından bu yazım bir gelenek oluşturmuş ve Ahmedi’nin İskendernâme’sinden sonra 16. yüzyılda Ahmed-i Rıdvan ve Figani tarafından İskendernâme örnekleri yazılmıştır. Bu tezin bir kısmı da bu metinlerin çevirileri üzerine odaklanacaktır. In addition, he uses the tavelogues of Clavijo, sent as a Spanish envoy to Tamerlane. Prof. Forman Christian College University Lahore, Pakistan, [email protected] Abstract This paper discusses the relationship between sufis and local tribal and kinship structures in the last half of eighteenth century to the end of nineteenth century Mianwali, a district in the south-west of Punjab. The study shows how tribal identities and local forms of religious organizations were closely associated. Attention is paid to the conditions in society which grounded the power of sufi and shrine in heterodox beliefs regarding saint‟s ability of intercession between man and God. Sufi‟s role as mediator between tribes is discussed in the context of changed social and economic structures. Their role as mediator was essentially depended on their genealogical link with the migrants. This shows how tribal genealogy was given precedence over religiously based meta-genealogy of the sufi-order. The focus is also on politics shaped by ideology of British imperial state which created sufis as intermediary rural elite. The intrusion of state power in sufi institutions through land grants brought sufis into more formal relations with the government as well as the general population. The state patronage reinforced their social authority and personal wealth and became invested with the authority of colonial state. Using hagiographical sources, factors which integrated pir and disciples in a spiritual bond are also discussed. This relationship is discussed in two main contexts, one the hyper-corporeality of pir, which includes his power and ability to move through time and space and multilocate himself to protect his disciples.

Trabzon (population about 250,000) is a 90-minute flight from Istanbul and a 3-hour drive (198 km) from the Georgian border. It is a long, skinny town squeezed along the coast by mountains which are strikingly green and usually covered in mist. It rains very often. Because of these conditions and the dramatic green I have heard this part of the coastline referred to as Turkey's Shangri-La and I like to repeat it. Tea and hazelnuts are grown on the slopes since the climate is more humid as a rule than one might expect. A few of the peaks are snow- capped now because 18 inches of snow fell last week, a freak fall such as has not happened in a decade. The sea is fiat and grey as gun-metal with a sharp wind coming off it. As a result I am always cold but the truth is that after the hot summer in Istanbul I rather like it. I remember the end of Brave New World when the Controller gives the rebel Helmholtz a choice of exile in the Falklands or Samoa, and he chooses the Falklands because he thought the cooler weather would focus his mind.

Jon Magoulias and I are blessed to announce that we are planning a pilgrimage from October 12 – 26, 2015 entitled: “Saints Alive”! This experience will take us to some of the most famous and revered sites of our Christian Orthodox Faith. It will enable us to learn the lives of saints who were people just like us and journeyed through life to give glory to God. We will visit Constantinople and the Ecumenical Patriarchate where the relics of many saints are venerated; we will travel to Trabzon (Trebizon) on the Black Sea (known as Pontus) to visit sites that have been only been opened to us in recent years. At Trabzon we will visit the famous monastery of Panaghia Soumela, along with other churches and museums. Today the monastery's primary function is as a tourist attraction. It overlooks forests and streams, making it extremely popular for its aesthetic attraction as well as for its cultural and religious significance. As of 2012, the Turkish government has been funding restoration work, and the monastery is enjoying a revival in pilgrimage from Greece, the USA and Russia.

This paper reports results of research performed to develop cement mixture proportions using these slags. The influence of slag proportions, specific surface, and water demand on compressive strength and bulk density of cement blends are presented in this paper. The different test results, which were compared with the Turkish Standards, in general, were found to be within the limits. 0 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd Introduction Reutilization of industrial by-products has been a thrust area of research, both ecologially and economically, in recent decades. The cementitious materials presently used for that purpose are silica fume, fly ash, and blast furnace slag (1). The use of iron blast furnace slag as a cementitious material has been practised in Europe since the late 1800s. It was not until World War II, when slag cement was used extensively as an energy saving measure, that its excellent performance and durability properties were fully appreciated.
