  • UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites in Slovakia
UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in Slovakia Several of our cultural and natural properties were inscribed into the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Bardejov and Banská Štiavnica's historical centre and its technical monuments, Spiš Castle- the biggest castle in central Europe, Vlkolínec Village with its wooden houses documenting our traditions and culture, wooden churches situated in eastern Slovakia are just examples of our historical monuments inscribed into the List. We would like to mention some natural treasures from the UNESCO List: unique caves lying in Slovak Paradise, Oak Primaeval Forest in North-East Slovakia. On the other hand, there are some treasures waiting to be inscribed into the List: Gothic wooden altar chiseled out by Master Pavol from Levoča, Limes Romanus-an ancient Rome’s border defence system or Tokai vineyards. Brief Description Spišský Hrad has one of the largest ensembles of 13th and 14th century military, political and religious buildings in eastern Europe, and its Romanesque and Gothic architecture has remained remarkably intact. The extended site features the addition of the historic town-centre of Levoča founded in the 13th and 14th centuries within fortifications. Most of the site has been preserved and it includes the 14th century church of St James with its ten alters of the 15th and 16th centuries, a remarkable collection of polychrome works in the Late Gothic style, including an 18.6 metre high alterpiece by completed around 1510 by Master Paul. Spissky castle, view from Drevenik Outstanding Universal Value The castle of Spišský Hrad, the town of Levoča, the associated sites in Spišské Podhradie, Spišská, Kapitula, and Ţehra constitute a remarkable group of military, urban, political, and religious elements, of a type that was relatively common in medieval Europe, but of which almost none have survived in such a complete condition with equivalent integrity.

U.S. Department of Agriculture, Technical Bulletin No. 1616, 100 pp. Six Eurasian species of Carduus thistles (Compositae: Cynareael are troublesome weeds in North America. They are attacked by about 340 species of phytophagous insects, including 71 that are oligophagous on Cynareae. Of these Eurasian insects, 39 were ex tensively tested for host specificity, and 5 of them were sufficiently damf..ghg and stenophagous to warrant their release as biological control agents in North America. They include four beetles: Altica carduorum Guerin-Meneville, repeatedly released but not estab lished; Ceutorhynchus litura (F.), established in Canada and Montana on Cirsium arvense (L.) With the financial support of the International Visegrad Fund Support for the least developed districts and regional development in Slovak republic Roma advocacy and research center Introduction In Slovakia we have several initiatives that try to address regional differences. One of them is Community led local development - CLLD. CLLD is a tool for involving local actors in deciding on the social, environmental and economic development of their territory. It is based on the bottom-up principle and on the LEADER signs, so far used only as a separate initiative of the European Union and later as part of rural development programs. Basically, representatives of the microregion in question will determine their own development priorities (strategy) and, after approval by the governing body, carry out their own selection of projects. This approach is implemented through Integrated Local Development Strategies (ILDSs), respectively. CLLD strategies, which are developed with respect to local needs and capabilities, and include innovative elements linked to local situations, networking and, where appropriate, cooperation. The promoter and holder of the ILDS is a territorially competent public-private partnership that acquires the status of a Local Action Group (LAG) upon its approval by the competent authority. Another tool to alleviate regional disparities is a program to support the least developed districts. Economic growth and development in the Slovak Republic highlighted the differences between regions and districts of Slovakia. If the majority of the population benefits from the growth, the least developed regions suffer from a high rate of unemployment, the departure of the young and educated workforce, and a lack of investment and entrepreneurial activity.
