Son of Bum is a wonderful story of a fatherBy Gary OHaganSon of Bum is a wonderful story of a father, Bum Phillips, and his son Wade as they travel through the wilds of High School football in Texas, College Football and the NFL where they truly made their mark and continue to do so. Bum was and Wade is a beloved character and friend to hundreds of players they taught and the hundreds of thousands of fans that cheered their teams on particularly the phenom which was the Hosuton Oilers. The story is beautifully written in Wade's distinctive reassuring voice. I was moved by the way the book circled back in the final chapters to let us all know how much Bum meant to Wade, and does today, and how important Wade was to his father throughout their lives and in Bums final days. For all those parents with children with an interest in sports the story of this father/son relationship is an example of how beautiful it can all work out . Through victory and defeat on the field their love for each other always won out. It was unconditional.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Memories and InsightsBy GWLBack in the 1970s and 80s I was a Redskins fan, and as such I had a healthy hatred for the Dallas Cowboys. But it never extended down to Houston and the Oilers. When Bum had them they were my second favorite team. It wasn't because of Earl Campbell or Curly Culp or any of the other players. It was because of Bum. A real deal original in a league that was already well on the way of becoming too corporate and too cookie cutter.Bum was football plain and simple. A high school coach without grand ambition who rose through the college ranks and into the pros on the strength of his ability to teach the game and build teams. He took the game seriously enough to make it his life's work, but he never took it or himself too seriously. Didn't see the need to become another walking advertisement for Nike or UA. Stetson and Nocona boots were more to his tastes and the No Fun League wasn't going to change that. Wade Phillips is his own man every bit as much as his daddy was. He's his daddy's son through and through. For an Oilers fan the book is a chance to relive memories of a unique and excellent team. Certainly an opportunity to revisit Bum. Wade's book goes beyond that though .. much as Bum was more than just an oversized personality, he was also a very sharp football man whose influence on the defensive side of the ball is still felt today. So too is Wade more than just the son of a well known coach, he's also a great teacher of the game, who even if he won't admit it, may rank higher among defensive coordinators of that past 40 yrs than Bum ranks among head coaches. His book isn't just the story of his dad, or the story of their relationship, but the story of a successful life in pro football. Successful, but not enormously so.Wade's career had its ups and downs. It could have had fewer downs if he'd been a little bit better as a coach, or not quite as good a coach. Some coordinators who advance to head coaching positions win championships and never look back. Other coordinators, no matter how good they might be at the level get sized up as better suited to stay at that level. Wade was somewhere between the two. Six times teams hired or promoted him to head coach. And six times he followed head coaching jobs by returning to defensive coordinator. His has been an unusual career path. A better regarded coach could have followed one head coaching job with another. A lessor coach wouldn't have gotten six head coaching jobs. There's a humility in Wade's story. He knows what he knows, believes what he believes, and isn't shy about it. But he doesn't get too full of himself. He loves the game and all its challenges more than he loves Wade Phillips. And he loves his dad most of all.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An excellent book about love of family, and love of football!By rhsvampSon of Bum is a must read for any football fan. It is a thoughtful look at the lives of two notable and successful NFL coaches, and their loving connection through football. Read it! Legendary football coach and Super Bowl champion with the Denver Broncos, Wade Phillips, recalls his life in football and memories of his father, NFL head coach Bum Phillips, in a book perfect for a Fatherrsquo;s Day gift. ldquo;Having played for and against Wade Phillips, the first word that comes to my mind is respect. SON OF BUM is a great read about the Xs and Os from one of the greatest coaches in the league, as well as a loving tribute to the influence of family.rdquo;?Peyton Manning In his memoir Son of Bum, decorated NFL coach Wade Phillips shows that the roots of his knowledge come from his father, Bum Phillips. A beloved character in NFL history, Bum taught Wade from the beginning that ldquo;coaching isnrsquo;t bitching, rdquo; as well as how to have perspective on the game during tough times. These are lessons that apply both on the field and off, and Wade has passed this wisdom down to his son, Wes Phillips, an NFL coach himself. Known for his homespun, plain-talking ways, Wade is a groundbreaking coach who has long believed in using support and camaraderie?instead of punishment and anger?to inspire his players to be winners on and off the field. And though his defensive concepts are revolutionary, he would say they begin with common sense. Son of Bum is more than one manrsquo;s memoir?itrsquo;s a story of family and football and a father who inspired his son. ldquo;Having played for and against Wade Phillips, the first word that comes to my mind is respect. SON OF BUM is a great read about the Xs and Os from one of the greatest coaches in the league, as well as a loving tribute to the influence of family.rdquo; ?Peyton Manning ldquo;Wade is a breath of fresh air in the NFL?and this book is too. I've been blessed to know him for nearly 40 years. Like his dad?an old pal too?he is a genius! He can tell a story better than anyone in the league with that Texas down home wit and honesty. SON OF BUM is sensational!rdquo; ?Jim Nantz, sports commentator and author of Always by My Side ldquo;Wade Phillips has been a tremendously successful NFL Head Coach and maybe the best Defensive Coordinator ever because his players know he is committed to them as people and to their success. But most of all, as Captain Woodrow Call said in Lonesome Dove about a fellow fallen Texas Ranger, Phillips is lsquo;Cheerful in all weather, never shirked a task, and exhibits splendid behavior.rsquo;rdquo; ?Mike Leach, Head Coach, Washington State Cougars, and author of Swing Your Sword ldquo;Touching, revealing and worthy of a movie, SON OF BUM is the rare sports book that makes you want to hug your dad one more time?and harder than ever before. Football fans will devour this for the Xs and Os insight; I couldnrsquo;t put it down because of a sonrsquo;s vividly described love for his old man.rdquo; ?Lars Anderson, sports writer, author of The Mannings and The Storm and the Tide ldquo;Going back to the great battles between the Houston Oilers and the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1970s, I have been able to enjoy almost four decades of great coaching and great stories from Bum and Wade Phillips. Come along for a great football ride that takes you through the great stories, great coaching, and great insights in SON OF BUM.rdquo; ?John Clayton, sports writer, ESPN ldquo;Wade Phillips is a creative coaching genius whose defenses have been so overpowering they have altered the course of the NFL. His effervescent, optimistic, caring attitude has endeared generations of coaches and athletes to him and his story and life philosophy can enrich readers.rdquo; ?Leigh Steinberg, sports agent and author of Winning with Integrity and The AgentAbout the AuthorWade Phillips is an innovative football coach with a long and successful career in the NFL.
