Phillips built a solid career in Houston and New Orleans, and his trademark cowboy hat and ostrich skinned blue boots belied his colorful nature. Bum never wore that ten gallon hat in domed facilities; his mother taught him it was disrespectful to wear a hat indoors. Phillips began his career in the 1950s as a high school coach in Texas. He was hired a decade later as a defensive assistant for San Diego by offensive innovator Sid Gillman. When Gillman became head coach at Houston in the early 70s, he brought Phillips with him. Bum became head coach and GM in 1975, and became the most successful coach in franchise history with a 59-38 record. Phillips won games in physical style behind a solid running game and tough defense. He used battering ram Earl Campbell to wear down the defense with punishing runs followed by play action passing. Many believe he is responsible for Campbell’s physical deterioration, but Phillips was an old school football coach.

  • Texas Sports Hall of Fame
Texas Sports Hall of Fame The Texas Sports Hall of Fame was organized in 1951 by the Texas Sports Writers Association. Each year the honorees are inducted into the Hall of Fame at a gala dinner. (The second such fete in 1952 was headlined by, “That filmland athlete, Ronald Reagan, and his actress wife, Nancy Davis,” The Dallas Morning News, June 9, 1952.) The hall was originally in Grand Prairie in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The Hall of Fame was closed in 1986 for financial reasons, but in 1991 it was reopened in Waco. In addition to memorabilia, the new location also houses archives. Under the current selection process, dues-paying members of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame can nominate any number of individuals. (Anyone can become a member.) The selection committee, chaired by Dave Campbell, founder of Texas Football Magazine, reviews all nominees and creates the “Official Voting Membership” ballot. Ballots are then mailed to the voting membership, former Texas Sports Hall of Fame inductees and the media selection committee. The results of the balloting are announced in the fall with the induction banquet following in the winter. The hall of fame website is at www.tshof.org. THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 25, No. 1 (2003) Archie Manning, Quarterback New Orleans Saints (1971-82); Houston Oilers (82-83); Minnesota Vikings (83-84) March 25, 2002 By Thomas Danyluk I admit it. I didn’t want to do it. After Archie Manning agreed to give an interview for this project and I dug into the whole research process, it didn’t take long before things got way too depressing. It had been quite a while since I sifted through any Saints stats from the 1970s, but motivation dropped way out of sight in a hurry. No mid-December contests to relive when the stakes were high. No playoff games to revisit. No championship seasons. Just a whole bayou full of losing. Too much losing. Too many thirds-and fourteen, year after year after year. Here’s a sample of the mess that really belongs buried somewhere in a sealed underground vault. • 1971 Saints, Manning’s rookie year: 4-8-2. Last place in the NFC West. Seven penalties per game are the most in the league and yield almost 1000 bonus yards to New Orleans’ opponents. XXX • 1972 Saints: 2-11-1. Last place. Leading rusher in New Orleans? Running back Bob Gresham with 381 yards. You don’t want to know the runner-up performance at RB. Well, maybe you do. Fullback Bill Butler dutifully kicked in 233. Only five rushing touchdowns all season as a team. • 1975 Saints: 2-12. Last place again. Manning tosses 20 picks and 7 lonely touchdowns, while the offense averages barely 12 points per game and scores over 20 only twice.

  • Interim Coaches : « the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly »
THE COFFIN CORNER : Vol. 26, No. 6 (2004) INTERIM COACHES : The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly By Mark Speck While coaching styles and philosophies have changed over the years, one thing about head coaches has remained a constant.. You’re hired to be fired. Every coach knows this to be true Every coach has been fired at one time or another. After a couple losing seasons, or a few playoff failures. Sometimes after a winning season that doesn’t meet the owners expectations. And sometimes, a coach may be fired during the season, after a couple bad games. That’s where the interim coach comes in. The interim coach is a top assistant, a front office person, or even an unemployed head coach who has the unenviable task of taking over a team in mid-season. His job: to somehow rally the troops, right a sinking ship, turn around a losing season, and if he’s lucky get retained as the head coach for next season. Interim head coaches have met with varying degrees of success in the long history of pro football. Some men have handled it well, and some, not so well. There have been good ones, bad ones and some downright ugly ones. There have been some who at first glance looked bad, but turned out to be a good choice. Two cases in point would be Sid Gillman and Marv Levy. Gillman replaced Bill Peterson as head coach of the Oilers in 1973. Houston had lost all five of their games, and under the aged General Manager and former coach, the Oilers didn’t improve much, finishing the season 1-13.
