Maquetación 1 ste año India será el país protagonista de muchas de las acti- vidades en las que participará Casa Asia. Es el año de la India en España, y cómo no, su cine también estará presente. Y Eesta muestra es el inicio del recorrido cinematográfico que haremos por un país rico en matices, colores y disciplinas. Porque hablando de cine, India no es sólo Bollywood (el cine que se hace en Bombay), sino que NO SOLO BOLLYWOOD: NUEVO CINE DE LA INDIA CICLO RAINCOAT | PAAP | TARE ZAMEEN PAR | LIFE IN A METRO también podremos disfrutar de su cine independiente y de las cinema- tografías del sur (la tamil, la telugu…) que cada día adquieren más importancia, ofreciendo un cine fresco y genuinamente original, sin olvi- dar las raíces y tradiciones de su país, ni los imprescindibles números musicales.     Whose Mother (land)?: Visualising and Theorising National Identity - Karen Gabriel - Introduction Using established and familiar iconographic representations of the nation, this paper will make two intertwined arguments. The first of these is that by and large, narrations of the nation have a melodramatic structure. The second is that, the iconic and mythogenic figuring of the nation as Mother India/Bharat Mata, contrary to enduring assumptions about it, is, strictly speaking, not a ‘national’ one at all. To do the above, the paper will critically review the relations between a) melodrama, gender, the organisation of sexuality, the family and the nation; b) The principle of maternality, the maternal body and nation. c) It will examine the ways in which central symbols of the national iconography of Mother India/ Bharat Mata have been cognised and reworked Some art instances and modern cinematic narrativizations and representations of the nation in mainstream Bombay cinema will be used to exemplify the precise nature of the relations set out above and the arguments being made. The argument will rest in the main on the work of cinema, since cinema remains a key representational site at which the mechanics of melodrama as these pertain to the nation-state are clearly deployed and visibilised. This specific dynamic was inevitable, in manner of speaking, given Bombay cinema’s historical involvement with nationalism, the nationalist movement and ideas of nation: this powerful cultural apparatus early on officially declared its commitment to promoting nation-building, national integration and patriotism. Popular Hindi cinema has been a major point of reference for Indian culture in the last century, and will undoubtedly persist in the 21 st century. To an extent, Hindi cinema has shaped and reflected the burgeoning transformation of a 'traditional India' to a 'modern India'. (I use the term modern to reflect the impact the west has had on Indian society, and how this impact in turn is reflected on screen). Issues surrounding gender and sexuality tend to be avoided, if not subverted in Hindi cinema. More specifically, issues surrounding femininity and female sexuality in Hindi cinema is either not recognised or 'mis-recognised' on screen. Feminist studies, in relation to film, have taken up these issues, to a large extent in the west (cf. Hollows, 2000; Kaplan, 2000; Macdonald, 1995). Chatterji (1998) maintains that the interest of feminists in film began as a general concern for the under­ representation and mis-representation of women in cinema.
