Kochi - 682 018, Kerala, India e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT A new species of Harpadon Lesueur, 1825 captured from the continental slope area 19° 53’ N - 69° 23’E (north-eastern Arabian Sea) is described. The species Harpadon nudus sp. nov. was identified possessing a prominent trilobed caudal fin and a wide mouth with strong fang like barbed teeth and has been distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: slender, completely scaleless body with very short pectoral (8.6 - 13.8% SL) and pelvic (16.4 - 21.6% SL) fins, large eyes (9.1 - 15.1% HL) with narrow inter-orbital width (15% of HL) and single pair of nares, situated close to the tip of the narrow snout. Morphologically it differs from the partially scaled species such as Harpadon nehereus in having very short pectoral fins not reaching up to its dorsal fin, single pair of nares and a pointed snout in dorsal view. It can be distinguished from Harpadon microchir by its greater head length of 22 - 26% SL; absence of scales at the base of the adipose fin and on the lateral line as well as the dorsal fin count of 12 rays. It is differentiated from Harpadon mortenseni by its lower lateral line pores count (40 - 43), higher number of branchiostegals (17 to 20), absence of scales on the lateral line or caudal peduncle and absence of vomerine teeth. -

The identification of the population status and the conservation of commercially important and endemic wild fish populations in this region are crucial for the management. The aim of this paper was to identify the population status of Cirrhinus reba, a promising aquaculture but vulnerable species in the Indo-Ganges river basin in Bangladesh. Methods: C. reba samples were collected from four isolated populations of the Brahmaputra (n = 30), the Padma (33), the Karatoya (31), and the Jamuna Rivers (30) in Bangladesh, and the population status was evaluated using morphometric and landmark comparisons. Data were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis test, univariate analysis, discriminant function analysis, and the formation of a dendrogram. Results: Three meristic characters (Pectoral fin rays, caudal fin rays, scale in lateral lines), four morphometric characters (head length, pre-orbital length, post-orbital length, maximum body depth), and truss measurement (4–7) were significantly different among the stocks. The step-wise discriminant function analysis retained 15 variables from morphometric and landmark measurements that significantly differentiated the populations based on the constructed DFI and DFII. Discriminate function analysis also showed that 91.2% of the original groups were classified into their correct samples. -

The length weight relationship of P. disjunctivus in the current study is useful in identifying growth and mortality parameters where prediction of yields and corresponding exploitation rates. Fish specimen of P. disjunctivus were collected from Kalawewa and Victoria reservoirs during the period of January to December 2015, 2016 and 2017 for length weight analysis. Pterygoplichthys species were also collected for morphometric landmark measurements. Samples were preserved in ice and transferred to the laboratory. Fish specimens were grouped into five categories according to their abdominal spots and vermiculations. Thirty two morphometric landmarks measurements of fish specimen were measured with the use of digital venire caliper to the nearest 0.1 mm. Length weight relationships of both females and males of P. disjunctivus in Kalawewa & Victoria reservoirs indicated an allometric growth for both sexes. Condition factor value of both sexes was significantly different indicating a healthy condition. There was no significant difference between the five fish categories based on the 32 morphometric measurements, one-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and canonical variate analysis were performed. -

Pectoral fin rays (p<0.01), caudal fin rays (p<0.05) and scales on lateral line (p<0.05) out of 11 meristic; peduncle length (p<0.05) and first pre-dorsal fin length (p<0.05) out of 9 morphometric and 1 to 2 (p<0.05), 3 to 4 (p<0.05), 6 to 7 (p<0.01), 9 to 10 (p<0.05) and 3 to 11 (p<0.01) out of 28 truss network measurements showed significant differences from each o ther among the individuals of the populations. st For morphometric and truss characteristics, the 1 discriminant function (DF1 ) accounted for 81.6% and 78.4% whereas the 2nd DF accounted for 18.4% and 21.6%, separately of the among-group variability and together they elucidated 100% of the total amongst group variability. -

Prior to the present study, the species was represented by only the two type specimens collected from the Hawaiian Islands. Among Japanese congeners, it is most similar to the Indo-Pacific Synodus doaki Russell and Cressey, 1979 especial- ly in having a very long nasal flap, but differs notably from the latter in that the tip of the pectoral fin extends well beyond a line connecting the dorsal- and pelvic-fin origins (vs. just reaching this level). The Japanese specimen is fully described, with a color photograph of the fresh specimen. A new standard Japanese name, “Kaede-eso”, is proposed for S. mundyi.
