December 2016 Copyright © 2016 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Abstract The Afrikaans film industry came into existence in 1916, with the commercial release of De Voortrekkers (Shaw), and, after 1948, flourished under the guardianship of the National Party. South Africa’s democratic transition, however, seemed to announce the death of the Afrikaans film. In 1998, the industry entered a nine-year slump during which not a single Afrikaans film was released on the commercial circuit. Yet, in 2007, the industry was revived and has been expanding rapidly ever since. This study is an attempt to explain the Afrikaans film industry’s recent success and also to consider some of its consequences. To do this, I situate the Afrikaans film industry within a larger – and equally flourishing – Afrikaans culture industry. -

Die film is binne drie maande in en om Hartbeespoortdam in Noordwes geskiet. Die film is vervaardig onder die vaandel van Hartiwood Films met Paul Kruger as die leier en fotografiese regisseur van die Liefling-span. 24 Afrikaanse liedjies is verwerk deur Johan Heystek en die choreograaf is Raymond Theart. Brian Webber is die regisseur van die opwindende dans en sangervaring in 'Liefling, die Movie' LIGGING Liefling, die Movie is hoofsaaklik in die dorpie Hartbeespoort in die Noordwes Provinsie geskiet. Die dorp is om die Hartbeespoortdam gebou. Dit is geleë suid van die Magaliesberge en noord van die Witwatersberge, ongeveer 35km wes van Pretoria. Die panoramiese uitsig en bergagtige ligging het meegebring dat Hartbeespoort n gewilde uitspanplek vir stedelinge geword het.Dit bied n verskeidenheid van water- en lugsport aan besoekers, spog ook met n akwarium, private dieretuin, slangpark,en kabelspoor. Daar is spesifiek gekyk na die tienermeisies van die Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk Waterkloof nadat die waarneming gemaak is dat baie van dié dogters aan depressie ly en dit ook deur van die ouers bevestig is. Die studie is aan die hand van die vier praktiese teologiese take wat deur Osmer (2008) voorgestel is, uitgevoer. Hierdie take is: Wat gebeur? Hoekom gebeur dit? Wat is veronderstel om te gebeur? Hoe kan daar gereageer word? In die studie is daar spesifiek gekyk na herhalende depressiewe episodes en Major Depressive Disorders. -

464 Ramantswana, “Reading of Psalm 137,” OTE 32/2 (2019): 464-490 Song(s) of Struggle: A Decolonial Reading of Psalm 137 in Light of South Africa’s Struggle Songs HULISANI RAMANTSWANA (UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA) ABSTRACT This article engages in a decolonial reading of Ps 137 in light of South African songs of struggle. In this reading, Ps 137 is regarded as an epic song which combines struggle songs which originated within the golah community in response to the colonial relations between the oppressor and the oppressed. The songs of struggle then gained new life during the post-exilic period as a result of the new colonial relation between the Yehud community and the Persian Empire. Therefore, Ps 137 should be viewed as not a mere song, but an anthology of songs of struggle: a protest song (vv. 1-4), a sorrow song (vv. 5-6), and a war song (vv. 7- 9). KEYWORDS: Psalm 137, Songs of Struggle, protest song, sorrow song, war song, exile, Babylon, post-exilic, Persian Empire. A INTRODUCTION Bob Becking, in a paper entitled “Does Exile Equal Suffering? A Fresh Look at Psalm 137,”1 argues that exile and diaspora for the exiles who were in Babylon did not so much amount to things such as hunger and oppression or economic hardship; instead, it was more a feeling of alienation which resulted in the longing to return to Zion. Becking’s interpretation of Ps 137 tends to minimise the colonial dynamics involved in the relationship between the oppressor and the oppressed, the coloniser and the colonised, which continually pushes the oppressed into the zone of nonbeing. -

These are the British Socialist Fabian Society founded in 1884, the South African Afrikaner Broederbond founded in 1918, and the South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR) founded in 1929. All three are generally accepted as highly influential organizations. The Fabian Society is arguably the earliest modern think tank. Its members developed two modes of communication which are identified in this thesis as rational-scientific and cultural-identity communications. -

CONFORMITY AND CONFLICT: AFRIKANER NATIONALIST POLITICS IN SOUTH AFRICA, 1948-1961 by John Lazar Balllol College Oxford University Michaelmas Term, 1987 One of the principal themes of this thesis is that it is incorrect to treat M Afrikanerdom" as a monolithic, unified ethnic entity. At the time of its election victory in 1948, the National Party (NP) represented an alliance of various factions and classes, all of whom perceived their Interests in different ways. Given, too, that black resistance to exploitation and oppression increased throughout the 1950s, apartheid ideology cannot be viewed as an immutable, uncontested blueprint, which was stamped by the NP on to a static political situation. The thesis is based on four main strands of research. It is grounded, firstly, in a detailed analysis of Afrikaner social stratification during the 1950s. The political implications of the rapid increase in the number of Afrikaners employed in "white-collar" occupations, and the swift economic expansion of the large Afrikaner corporations, are also examined. The second strand of research examines the short-term political problems which faced the nationalist alliance in the years following its slim victory in the 1948 election. Much of the NP's energy during its first five years in office was spent on consolidating its precarious hold on power, rather than on the imposition of a "grand" ideological programme. Simultaneously, however, intense discussions - and conflicts - concerning the long-term implications, goals and justifications of apartheid were taking place amongst Afrikaner intellectuals and clergymen. A third thrust of the thesis will be to examine the way in which these conflicts concretely shaped the ultimate direction of apartheid policy and ideology. -

University Abstract: For the National Party of South Africa, Communism was simultaneously a legitimate concern and a useful concept with which to attract voters and deflect criticism. The threat of Communism was frequently allied with the threat of African nationalism in National Party discourse during the apartheid era. The alliance between the African National Congress and the South African Communist Party, and the Soviet's role in supporting various governments and opposition movements on the subcontinent lent credence to the National Party's stance.
