CANTERBURY’S VIBRANT CRICKET NETWORK BRINGS CULTURES AND COMMUNITIES TOGETHER.

The diversity within cricket in the city and region is reflected in the rich blend of ethnicities that come together each week, with almost 1 in 5 male cricketers identifying as Indian or Asian. Cricket is an important part of Kiwi culture, as demonstrated by the inclusion of a cricket programme in the Kiwi Lifestyle induction course for new immigrants. The Christchurch Ethnic Council, working with the Christchurch cricket family, now run an annual 4 week Ethnic Cricket Festival each summer that celebrates the diversity of the city and brings people together around a common passion. Together Canterbury University and Ara connect international students from around New Zealand with cricket clubs. Burger King Super Smash

A pressure-cooker environment pushing domestic players to the edge of their ability, and in turn pushing cricket to the edge of what’s possible. The league is an area of significant development and new investment by NZC, and the introduction of the women’s Burger King Super Smash this year will further enhance this. Like domestic T20 leagues around the world, there is significant growth in interest and engagement and NZC is looking to work closely with our partners to maximise this. A major part of the importance lies with our future broadcast strategy. The last season of Burger King Super Smash season had 10 million viewers in India via Star Sports. In order to meet the needs of our overseas Broadcast Partners, key international matches of the 2018-19 Summer of Cricket season have been moved to a later start time, to ensure our fans in India can tune in to the excitement. To build upon our strong overseas viewership, we need to accommodate a similar degree of flexibility for domestic matches.
