INTERDISICIPLINARY COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS The Red That Colored the World, International Folk Art Museum, 2015 I collaborated with exhibit designers and curators on the exhibit, The Red That Colored the World, at the International Folk Art Museum. The exhibition explores the creation and use of cochineal dye through artifacts in the Americas, Europe and Asia as well as the historical and social implications of the color red. The section I helped design, Cochineal in History of Science, utilized educational components to explore the scientific history of cochineal and the process in which insects are harvested and made into dye.

Toxic Food, Political Performance Art, Wal-Mart, Las Vegas, New Mexico, 2014 I was part of a team of faculty members from across disciplines—sociology, criminal 3 justice, and history—who collaborated to write a successful Nina Tesla Ballen visiting professorship foundation grant which enabled Spanish performance artist and activist Yolanda Dominguez to work on location with us in Las Vegas for two weeks. Students in my Design Projects for the Community course researched and created “pitches” for performance concepts related to globalization. Toxic Food, the winning proposal, is an “action” that casts a critical eye towards the safety of the food we consume.

Science of Cities: Santa Fe Children’s Museum, 2013 In collaboration with scientists from the Santa Fe Institute (SFI), the Santa Fe Children’s Museum (SFCM), and the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), students in the Program for Interactive Cultural Technology created an exhibit, The Science of Cities. The exhibit visually expressed the innovative science from scientist at SFI regarding cities, scaling and sustainability. I was the project manager and a faculty co-instructor/contributor and was in charge of co-creating the curriculum, mentoring students, inviting visiting artists, and the budget. I planned a field-based research opportunity to Denver where we met with exhibit designers from the Denver Children’s Museum. Science of Cities Documentation

Gustave Baumann Marionettes, Interactive Installation, 2013 Gustave Baumann created 70 hand-carved wooden marionettes in the 1920’s and 1930’s. These pieces are in the New Mexico Museum of Art’s collection and due to their fragility are seldom only shown in public. In an effort to aid the New Mexico Museum of Art to share these incredible artifacts more readily, a media arts and technology team was assembled to create an interactive multimedia piece. My contribution to the project was to create digital 3d models of various marionettes using a computational photography technique called photogrammetry. The final product is an interactive piece that allows the viewer to “become” a Baumann marionette. Marionette Documentation

Corpus Electric-Wearable Fashion Performance— Eighteenth International Symposium on Electronic Art, ISEA2012 Albuquerque: Machine Wilderness, 2012

This large scale STEMarts collaboration took place between Media Arts students and faculty from New Mexico Highlands University, members of the avant-garde fashion team: Taos Runway Vigilantes (TRV), students enrolled in the ISEA2012 Visiting Artists Teaching Program, and 516 ARTS. United by a common goal, the collaborators worked to create components for a technologically inspired fashion show entitled Corpus Electric, which was presented at ISEA2012. The event was featured during the Intel Education Day of the conference on September 23, 2012. I was the faculty consultant/contributor and project manager.

Emergence: A New View of Life’s Origin: New Mexico Natural History and Science Museum, 2011 Through a collaboration between the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, the Santa Fe Institute, and New Mexico Highlands University, the exhibit, Emergence: A New View of Life’s Origin, was developed, fabricated, and installed with funding from a $162,822 grant from the National Science Foundation. The exhibit explores cutting-edge scientific theories from Santa Fe Institute scientists regarding life’s origin and the evolution of life. As the project manager and co-instructor for the program, I assisted students in the development of print and multimedia components. I developed curriculum and team-taught the program, coordinated visits of several co-collaborators and exhibit design specialists and managed the exhibit design budget. Emergence Documentation

Indian Rodeo on the Navajo Nation-a film and exhibition by Devyn Dennison, 2009-2013 I mentored an extraordinary student, Devyn Dennison, while she researched, wrote and created a film and correlating exhibit about Navajo Rodeo. Devyn comes from a long line 4 of Navajo rodeo stars as well as a ranching family. During the fall of 2009, Devyn finished a 20-minute documentary, Indian Rodeo on the Navajo Nation which provided the framework for her exhibition. I secured a grant from the New Mexico Humanities Council for the project, which was designated a We the People project by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The exhibit and the film travelled to the following locations: the Pete V. Domenici Library, Navajo Technical College in Crownpoint, the Mesa Library in Los Alamos, and the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe. Additionally, I helped Devyn write and refine content for a paper on Navajo Rodeo on the Navajo Nation, which was accepted at the Museums and the Web 2010 Conference.

Interactive Fans, City of Las Vegas Museum, 2010 My students teamed up with the City of Las Vegas Museum to create interactive fans for a fashion exhibition at the museum. The students researched, designed, and produced interactive fans for the museum. The pieces illustrate the shift in communication from the Victorian era (i.e. the fan) to contemporary culture (i.e. texting) and fundamentally investigate how the tools we use alter how we communicate.

Fashioning New Mexico: New Mexico History Museum, 2009 A partnership between the New Mexico History Museum, the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs and the Media Arts Program at New Mexico Highlands University, constituted the first Program for Interactive Cultural Technology (PICT). Students worked to create a host of hands-on and multimedia pieces for the inaugural exhibition, Fashioning New Mexico at the museum. The exhibit explored the social, political, and personal implications, across various eras, of clothing. I was the project manager/co- instructor. I created a field-based research program for students to gather inspiration and make observations about innovative museum practices during a spring break trip to Washington D.C. I helped arrange personal tours of the Museum of Natural History, National Museum of the Native American, Marion Koshland Science Museum, Gallagher and Associates (exhibit design firm) and visited the Newseum and Holocaust Museum.
