Our ancestor, a Portuguese navigator, who discovered the CaroHne and Philippine Islands on March 12th, 1521, and who lost his life April 27th, in a skirmish with the natives on the Island of Mactan, opposite the town of Cebu, in the Philippine Islands.

1 12 Front Street, New York. INTRODUCTORY.

THE Island of Porto Rico, situated very nearly in the center of the Archipelago of the West Indies, is 1500 miles from New York. It is about 100 miles in length by 35 in width and in form is approximately a rectangle, having an area of 3670 square miles, or three-fourths the size of the state of Connecticut which has an area of 4674 square miles.

The island is traversed from northeast to southwest by a mountain chain and the longer northern slope of the water shed is broken by trans- verse ridges. There are about 25 rivers and hundreds of lesser streams. The island affords much in the way of picturesque landscape and interesting panorama. As natural curiosities, there are several caves; the cascade of St. Olalla in Bayemon; the Cacique Falls in Guanica, and a remarkable fountain in Aguadilla.

The principal lakes are: Martin Pena, Pifiones, Tortuguero, and Cano-Tiburones in the northern part of the island; Albufera de Joyuda in the west; Flamencos, Cienga and Guanica in the south. The best harbors are S. Juan on the north and Guanica on the southern shore. Other ports of considerable commerce—Arecibo, Agua- dilla, Mayaguez, Ponce, and Humacao are only roadsteads. The climate, though hot like all tropical coun- tries, is healthful. There are but two seasons: the dry during which the heat causes more or less sickness, and the wet when sometimes occur great tempests. The hottest months are from June to September, The time of rains is from August to December. Midwinter with its cool east winds is delightful.

Porto Rico possesses a soil of remarkable fer- tility. Sugar cane, coffee, tobacco, cacao, and cotton are the most valuable agricultural products. Corn, rice, beans, sweet potatoes, bananas, melons, oranges, pineapples, &c. all yield abundantly. Coffee does best on the high lands and in the shade. For this reason fruit trees are commonly planted in the coffee fields. The mountains are generally cultivated to their tops. The forests afford valuable lumber. Nearly a hundred years ago the government with wise foresight formally legislated that, "three trees should be planted for every one cut down." Medicinal plants, as well as trees and plants which furnish dyes and resins abound in all parts of the island. The mountains are full of wild pigeons, magpies, turtle doves, larks, linnets, and nightingales. While along the coast are flamengoeS; pelicans, herons and hawks. Tur- tles and bees abound. There are practically no poisonous reptiles, but spiders, centipedes, scor- pions, wasps, and fleas make their presence felt.

There are quarries of gypsum and white building stone at Ponce and Juana Diaz; of marble in C^guas and Rio Piedras; of granite in Maunabo and Yabucoa. Iron is found at Loiza; gold at Corozal and Luquillo; copper at Naguabo; zinc, rock crystal, and hard coal in the Serra of Mala- pascua. But the only mineral industry of any importance are the salt-works of Cabo Rojo, Guanica and Coamo. There are hot springs and mineral waters at Coamo and at Quintana in Ponce, and the waters of the river Guatemala and of the river San Lorenzo are thermal.

The principal exports from Porto Rico are sugar, coffee, tobacco, molasses, honey, cacao, cotton, hides, cattle, mules, unmanufactured woods, and salt. The imports being flour, butter, lard, wines, dried and canned fish; fabrics of silk, linen, cotton, and wool; crockery and glassware; all kinds of machinery; lumber, iron, steel, coal, &c. The leading article of import from the United States has been wheat flour. During the last five years, the value has averaged, yearly, about $600,000.

The cities of Utuado, Adjuntas, Yauco, San German, Maricao, and Lares are centers of the best coffee lands which produce annually about 350,000 bags. From Juncos to Comerio, and from Barceloneta to Isabella are the best tobacco sections. San Juan, Mayaguez, and Ponce are the most important business centers.

Implements of agriculture are, in general, rude and primitive. Many sugar plantations still use the old sugar mills. The centrals mentioned in this book are those equipped with modern machinery.

San Juan, the capital, on the northern coast of Porto Rico, is situated on an island about 3 miles long, connected with the mainland by the bridge of San Antonio. The city was founded

in 151 1, is walled and fortified. Morro Castle was begun in 1584. The castle of San Cristobal was finished in 1771. The harbor is good, though the entrance is narrow. The commerce is extensive. The manufactories of the city are limited to foundries, distilleries, an ice

The population of the capital, San Juan, is 28,700. factory, a match factory, the gas works and electric-light works. The water supply is dependent upon rain water and cisterns. An aqueduct is being built to bring water from the township of Rio Piedras, a distance of about six miles. This when completed will supply the city with an abundance of water. The houses are of stone, generally of 2 stories.

Prominent among the public buildings are: The Fortresses, Arsenal, Barracks, White House, Theatre, City Hall, Cathedral, Bishop's Palace, Seminary, Supreme Court, Custom House, Gov- ernor's Residence, "Instituto Civil" or Univer- sity, State Prison, Cemetery, &c.

Its institutions of beneficence consist of vari- ous asylums for the aged, insane, and poor; hospitals; co operative societies; a savings bank; a home and school for destitute and orphan children, where 150 boys and about as many girls receive an education and are taught a trade.

The " Instituto Civil " has courses in Law and Medicine, as well as a Normal course for the training of teachers.

The principal newspapers and periodicals published in San Juan are: Correspondencia de Porto Rico, Boletin Mercantil de Porto Rico, Las Noticias, Eco del Commercio, Listin Mercantil, Integridad Nacional, Illustracion Portorriquena, Revista Portorriquena, El Mentor, Reforma Agricola, Boletin Ecclesiastico.

Besides the jurisdiction of San Juan, the capital, the island is divided into seven departments or provinces, each named from its principal city, and these provinces are subdivided into 70 townships.

The last official census of Porto Rico was made :

in 1887. The population by provinces was, as follows PROVINCE. POPULATION, NO. Slavery was abolished in 1873. TOWNS AND TOWNSHIPS OF THE PROVINCE OF BAYAMON.

Bayamon, the chief town of this province is a station on the railroad between S. Juan and Are- cibo. Another railroad connects it with Catano wliere there is a petroleum refinery and an ice factory. The chief agricultural products of the township are sugar cane and coffee. According to the last official census, the township has a population of 15,316.

Carolina, founded in 1861, is situated in a level country watered by the river Loiza. The chief agricultural product is sugar cane. One ^^«/r(3;/equipped with modern machinery is known as the "Central Progresso." Population, 11,042.

CoROZAL was founded in 1795, has a population of 9,652. It is situated at some distance from the coast. The chief products of the township are sugar and coffee.

Dorado is a village at the mouth of the river

Plata. The township contains 1 1 sugar plantations, I coffee plantation, and 96 pasture farms. Population of the township, 3,985.

Loiza on the Rio Grande dates its foundation back to 1 719. The township produces great quantities of sugar cane, and has one ver}^ large central. Many farms are devoted to fattening cattle for export. Population, 9,600. N aranjito in the interior on the river Plata was founded in 1824. The principal gains of the farmers are from fattening cattle. Population, 6,661.

Rio Grande has a population of 6,237. Its lands are fertile and yield abundantly all the common products of the country.

Rio Piedras has much land that is argfeliferous and calcareous, useless for cultivation. The lO lower lands on the river Piedras produce sugar cane. An aqueduct is being built from Rio Piedras to San Juan which when finished will furnish the latter with an abundant supply of water. The population of the township is 1 1,042.

ToA-ALTA was founded in 1 75 1 . Cattle raising and sugar making are the principal occupations of this section. The township has a population of 6,808.

ToA-BAjA is in a beautiful valley on the river Plata, "fronting the capital, on the other side of the harbor." The chief products of the town ship are sugar and cattle. Population, 3,285. Trujillo on the river Loiza was founded in

1 80 1. There are 2 large sugar plantations in this township, but the most of the farms are devoted to the fattening of cattle. Population, 4.015-

Vega-alta founded in 1775, is situated on the river Cibuco. The chief product is sugar cane. Population, 5,498.

Vega-baja is also in great part devoted to the cultivation of sugar cane. In this jurisdiction is a central for sugar making called "San Vicente." The population of the township is 10,648. II TOWNS AND TOWNSHIPS OF THE PROVINCE OF ARECIBO.

Arecibo is on the northern coast of Porto Rico, about 30 miles to the west of San Juan. It has about 6,000 inhabitants. Its roadstead is long but difficult of entrance and dangerous for disembarking when the sea is rough. A life- saving station is established here, furnished with all needed supplies. The city has good public and commercial buildings. The township of Arecibo contains about 1,000 small farms, beside 10 large sugar plantations, and has a population of 27,722. The valleys of the river Arecibo and its tributaries, produce in abundance excellent tobacco, coffee, bananas, and also furnish good pastures for cattle raising. Not far from the city on the road to Utuado is "Council" Cave, the vault of which is formed by a multitude of unequal arches, having beautiful crystalizations which give a fantastic aspect to the whole.

Hatillo is on the northern coast near the mouth of the river Camuy. It is also a station on the shore line railroad. The township has 3 sugar plantations, and about 450 small farms devoted to the cultivation of tobacco, and all crops and fruits common to the country. The population of the township according to the last official census is 9,671. Camuy on the northern shore possesses considerable valuable timber lands. Excellent tobacco grows on the low lands, and about 100 small farms on higher lands are devoted to coffee raising. The township has a population of 9,181. Camuy is the present terminus of the railroad from San Juan.

QuEBRADiLLAS is situated in a very attractive and picturesque locality. 12

The township produces tobacco, coffee, sugar, lumber, corn, and rice, these being named in the order of local commercial value. It has a popu- -ation of 5,929. Utuado enjoys a most agreeable climate being one of the coolest places on the island. Upon the heights coffee grows in great quantities, also some bananas, cotton, &c., are cultivated. Through this township flows the river Arecibo

and its many tributaries : the "Grande," '' Vivi," "Tanama," "Saliente," "Don Alonso," "Limon," "Martin" and "Morales." The valleys produce sugar cane, and luxuriant meadows devoted to cattle raising. In this township is the "Cave of the Dead," so called from the

fact that in it were discovered quantities of hu- man bones. It is believed to have been in other times a place of deposit for the dead. The township has a population of 31,292. The Public Plaza in this town is considered one of the finest in the island. The principal newspaper published in Utuado is called "La voz de la Montana."

Barceloneta is one of the most modern divi- sions on the island. It was founded in 1882, has a population of 6,246. The village is a station on the railroad between S. Juan and Arecibo.

CiALES in the interior produces principally coffee, tobacco and lumber. Its arable lands are divided up into small farms. The township has a population of 13,036.

Man ATI is on the river Manati, and is also a station on the railroad between S. Juan and Arecibo. Its lands are fertile. In the town-

ship are 4 sugar plantations, i coffee plantation, and about 300 small farms of general produce and fruits. Population, 8,191. MoROVis has 3 sugar plantations, and about 400 small farms, plenty of good coffee land, but no large coffee plantations. The township has a population of 11,567. 14 TOWNS AND TOWNSHIPS OF THE PROVINCE OF AGUADILLA.

The town of Aguadilla is built on the slope of the mountain "Jaicoa." It has a considerable commerce, is one of the oldest, well-known ports. A deep and spacious roadstead is formed by- Cape S. Francisco and Pt. Borinquen. The township has a population of 16,306. The chief pro- ductions are sugar cane, coffee, tobacco, maize, cacao, lumber. Oranges and limes grown here are of superior quality. Just west of the town is a remarkable spring, which has in its waters a multitude of fishes. The waters overflow in a cascade and then flow on in open artificial chan- nels through the middle of the streets till they reach the sea.

The Public Plaza in front of the church and the City Hall is divided so that each of its four corners forms a separate garden, which has in its center a statue representing one of the four seasons.

Isabella is situated in a level country through which flows the river Tinia. Great quantities of tobacco are raised in this section. The township has a population of 12,554.

Lares is high on the mountains having a climate delightfully cool. It is a rich coffee region, having 136 coffee plantations and 354 smaller coffee farms. The coffee of this section is pre- pared for market almost as well as the coffee of Yauco, though it has never yet quite attained to the fame nor the price of that. The population of this township is 17,163,

San Sebastian was founded in 1752, The rivers Culcbrinas and Guatemala flow through this township. The waters of the latter are warm. 15

The fertile lands of this region produce in great quantities coffee, cotton, tobacco, rice, corn, &c. Population, 14,042.

MocA lies lower down on the river Cidebrinas. The soil is poor. The principal products are sugar and lumber. Population, 1 1 ,092.

Aguada is the oldest town in the island. It was founded in 151 1. On the banks of the river are vestiges of an old fortress which existed in some remote epoch. The town is situated in a level country, which is marshy in the rainy sea- son. The soil is good, the chief products are sugar, coffee, and bananas. The township has ten sugar plantations, and a central for sugar making, called "El Coloso." Population, 9,557. RiNCON has a population of 5,337, was founded in 1770. Lands are hilly and high. Chief products are sugar cane, coffee, corn, and bananas. This jurisdiction has also one central known by the name of "Central Corsica." i6 TOWNS AND TOWNSHIPS OF THE PROVINCE OF MAYAGUEZ.

Mayaguez is on the west coast at the mouth of the river Mayaguez. Its commerce is extensive. The movement and traffic of the warehouses show the prosperous condition of the city. The principal industries of the city are: establishments for cleaning and milling coffee; saw-mills and lumberyards; distilleries; foundries; manufactories of carriages, furniture, ice, leather, bricks, chocolate, fruit beverages, &c. The public buildings are good. The principal ones are: the City Hall, Church, Military Hospital, Bar- racks, Theatre, Custom House, Asylum of St. Antonio, Market Plaza, Casino Hespana b'ltra- marino, Casino Mayaguez, Casino de San Juan, Spanish Bank, Savings Bank, Cemetery, &c. The water supply of this city is abundant. The savings Bank of Mayaguez was established about 20 years ago w^ith a capital of $2000 divided into 100 shares of $20 each. The purpose of the Bank was simply and only to attempt to waken among the poorer laboring class the vir- tue of economy. On Sundays from 9 to 1 1 A. M., the Bank is open to receive deposits which may not be less than 25 cents nor more than $10. The number of depositors was soon counted by hundreds, who came weekly to deposit their savings. Interest at the rate of 6% yearly is paid in June and December. On December 31st of every year there has been a dividend distrib- uted among share-holders and those depositors who have $5. or more, which has remained in the Bank the entire year. Three prizes of $25., $15., and $10. respectively are given annually to the poorer depositors, who have deposited some- thing every Sunday for six months without in- terruption, and without having drawn out any 17 money. These prizes are drawn by lot. The country around Mayagiiez, belonging to its jurisdiction is fertile, yielding in abundance all the common products of the island; but the principal source of wealth is commerce. Popu- lation of the township, 28,246.

The principal newspapers published in Maya- giiez are: El Imparcial, Revista Mercantil, Bole- tin Masonico.

A?5asco is situated on the river A fiasco, which is here crossed by a substantial bridge built by the government. It is also a station on the railroad between Aguadilla and Mayaguez. This town was founded in 1703. The chief products of the township are sugar, coffee, rice, named in the order of their value. There are many sugar plantations, and one ''Central." Population of the tovv^nship, 12,437. Las Marias was founded in 1871, has a population of 9,792. Its rich lands are devoted almost entirely to the cultivation of coffee.

Maricao is one of the coolest and healthiest places on the island. All its lands lie high on the mountains, and are good for coffee culture, which constitutes the principal source of wealth, ex- cluding other crops as well as cattle raising, even what is necessary for home use. Population of the township, 7,728. Sabana Grande was destroyed by fire in 1892. But was promptly rebuilt by generous subscrip- tions from all parts of the island. Sugar cane and coffee culture are about equally divided among the lands of this township. Population, 9,611.

San German is situated on a hill around which flows the river Guanajibo. The city has many good buildings. There is here a Gov. Hospital served by the Sisters of Charity, and a school for poor i8 children is annexed to these buildings directed by teachers from the same religious order. There are 3 Public Plazas. One in front of the new Church and the City Hall, another joins the old convent " Porta Coeli," and lastly the Plaza of San Sebastian in front of the church of the same name. Contiguous to the new Church has been lately built an Episcopal Seminary dependent on the Seminary at San Juan. The production of sugar in this township is much less than formerly. Coffee, corn, cotton, and bananas, yield abundant harvests. The forests furnish mahogany, carob, laurel, oak, cedar, and lica. In this region an extensive industry is carried on of weaving hats, hammocks and sleeping mats from the fibre of the maguey. The township haS a population of 19,827.

Lajas is a recent division made in 1883. The township has a few sugar plantations, and also a few small coffee farms, >but it is mostly given up to of is grazing. The population the township 9, 1 92. Cabo Rojo is an old town founded in 1771. The township consists of low lands which produce great quantities of sugar cane. Some tobacco, coffee and cotton are also cultivated. Quarries of fiaofstone are found here, and in the southwest are extensive salt banks worked by the government. H ats of fine straw are manufactured here. The township has a population of 16,844.

HoRMiNGUERO IS ou the river Guanajibo. It has a population of 3,199. On a mountain in this township is the Hermitage and sanctuary of Our Lady of Monteserrate which formerly was much visited not only by the inhabitants of Porto Rico, but also by great numbers of pilgrims from Sta. Cruz, St. Thomas, Dominique, Martinique, Curacao, &c., who came to fulfill vows and offer worship to the Virgin Mary. 19 TOWNS AND TOWNSHIPS OF THE PROVINCE OF PONCE.

The city of Ponce is one of the most important on the island. It has a population of about 30,000 inhabitants. It is healthful and the sur- rounding country is picturesque. The distance from S. Juan by the highway is 80 miles. The city is well supplied with water by a good aqueduct. It has very good public buildings : City Hall, Church, Theatre, Asylum, Barracks, Cus- tom House, Market place, &c. The Public Plaza has fountains and flowers, and an Arabian Kiosk. There is an English Episcopal Church here, the only protestant church in the island. There are foundries, distilleries, and manufactories of carriages, hats, ice, chocolate, sea-bis- cuits and gas ; and an official Camera of Com- merce, Manufacture and Aorriculture.

At the Marina or Playa is the wharf and the warehouses of the city. Ponce itself being about 3 miles inland. The road between the two being lined on either side with pretty cot- tages, with gardens and fountains. The population of the Playa is about 3,000. A good road connects Ponce with Adjuntas and Arecibo. In this township are quarries of gypsum and white building stone, and hot mineral baths called ''Quintana," whose waters are recommended for cutaneous diseases. A good deal of English capital has been in- vested here in sugar plantations. Population of the township according to the last official census was 42,705. The principal newspapers published in Ponce are: El Noticiero, Eco del Sur, Listin Commer- cial, r3emocracia, Revista Obrera.

Adjuntas is an inland town on the principal 20 mountain range. A healthful place with a very agreeable climate. The heights are planted principally with coffee and bananas. An extraordin- ary number of streams large and small flow in all directions through its shady valleys. The township has a population of 16,321.

AiBONiTO on a table land of the mountains is about 1000 feet above the sea level and conse- quently enjoys a cool, pleasant climate, as com- pared with seaboard places. The greater part of this section is planted to coffee, with occasional strips of banana land and patches of tobacco and corn. Population of the township, 6,397. Barranquitas also on the mountains looks down upon most picturesque scenery. Valuable timber abounds. The lands are fertile. All common crops and fruits yield well, but coffee is mainly cultivated. Population, 5,828.

Barros is in the central part of the island. Chief products are coffee, lumber, cattle. Pop- ulation of the township, 11,697.

Coamo is one of the oldest towns on the island. It was settled in 1640. Near the town are hot mineral springs which are recommended for rheumatism, paralysis,

GuANicA is a village about 20 miles west of Ponce. Its commerce has never been of much importance, but it has a good harbor. It was the landing place of the army, under command of Major-General Miles, in July 1898.

GuAYANiLLA near the sea coast, is on the rail- 21 road between Yauco and Ponce. Chief products of the township are sugar and coffee. Popula- tion, 7,805.

JuANA Diaz is a picturesque town among the hills between Ponce and Coamo. About 9 miles in an air line from Ponce. All the products of the island yield, in this region, abundant harvests. Sugar cane and coffee are cultivated in about equal proportions and constitute the principal agricultural wealth. The township is watered by the rivers Jacaguas and Descalabrado. It has a population of 21,032.

Penuelas lies to the north of Guayanilla. The soil is not very good, contains plenty of clay. Sugar, coffee, bananas, corn, &c. are all cultivated to some extent. The township fur- nishes in abundance excellent lumber. Popula- tion, 10,023.

Sta. Isabel near the mouth of the Coamo river, has most fertile lands. About half the farms are devoted to cattle raising, the rest being planted mainly with sugar cane. Population, 3.332.

Yauco was founded in 1756. Its fertile lands produce sugar cane, coffee and bananas in great abundance. Coffee from Yauco is greatly ap- preciated in Europe, partly because the beans are of unusually large size, but probably more on account of its perfect preparation for market. It always sells for a higher price than the best from any other place on the island. The population of the township is 24,411. 22 TOWNS AND TOWNSHIPS OF THE PROVINCE OF GUAYAMA.

GuAYAMA, the chief town of the province, is near the southern shore, and has a population of about 5,000. It was founded in i 736. The most prominent feature of cultivation in this township is sugar cane, coffee coming- next, then cattle raising. There are two '''centrals'' for sugar making. Population of the township, 13,648.

Agnas-Buenas is an inland town. The lands of the township are mountainous, and mostly planted to coffee. There is a large cave in this section, which has a very interesting interior, though it is seldom visited on account of the poisonous spiders which infest it. The township has a population of 6,844,

Arroyo, on the southern coast, has considerable coast trade. Sugar cane is almost exclusively cultivated. Population of the township, 6,040.

Caguas is an inland village situated in a level country watered by the rivers Turabo and Cag- uitas The principal products of the township are coffee and sugar cane. There is some good timber, and a good deal of land devoted to cattle raising. Clay abounds, and an especial kind of clay filled with metallic particles which often make on the coarser substance pretty enamels or incrustations. This clay might doubtless be valuable for making glass or objects of art. Population of the township, 15,011.

CiDRA is a village on the river Plata. Prod- ucts of most value are timber and coffee. Pop- ulation of the township 6,365.

GuRABO is a village on the mountains. It has a pleasant climate, and is considered a very healthful place. The river Grande and the Loiza both flow through this township. Sugar cane is principally cultivated, some tobacco and coffee, but more of cattle raising. Population of the township, 7,202.

JuNCOS is an interior town about 5 miles dis- tant from Gurabo. The principal occupation of the residents of this section has been cattle raising. Some tobacco and rice is cultivated. Pop- ulation, 7,414.

Sabana del Palmar in the interior on the river Plata is said to furnish the best tobacco produced in the island. Population of the township, 6,739.

Salinas is not a very old town. The salt works are carried on by the government. Sugar cane and coffee are raised, and about 150 small farms are devoted to cattle raising. Population of the township, 4,341.

San Lorenzo also called Hato-Grande is on the river Grande. The soil is good, and water abundant. There are a few sugar plantations and a few coffee farms, but the most of the township is divided up into small farms which carry on a miscellaneous cultivation of general produce. Population, 9,671. 24 TOWNS AND TOWNSHIPS OF THE PROVINCE OF HUMACAO.

HuMACAO, the chief city of the province has a roadstead but no good harbor. Its commerce, mainly with neighboring islands is valuable. The town itself is about three miles from the shore. Its Public Plaza is considered the finest in the island. Three rivers flow through this township: the Humapao, the Candelera, and the Anton Ruiz. The principal occupation of the farmers in this locality has been cattle raising. But there are a few sugar plantations. Popula- tion of the township, 14,936.

Ceiba to the northeast of Humacao is an unim- portant village surrounded by sugar plantations. The township has a population of 4,341.

Farjauo is the seaport for a region whose lands are remarkably fertile. The harbor is good though not deep. Its commerce active and valuable, limited mostly to neighboring islands. The township is devoted to sugar cane and cattle raising, with patches of tobacco and melons. Population, 8,974.

LuQuiLLO in the northeast corner of the island, is on mountainous land which produces principally coffee, cacao, and lumber. " El Yunque" (The Anvil), the highest peak in the island, rises about 1520 feet above the sea level, and may be seen by vessels at the distance of sixty miles. Population, 6,579.

Maunabo carries on a considerable coast trade. The chief products for export are sugar, coffee, lumber. The township has a population of 5-823.

Naguabo. The valleys along its many streams are generally devoted to fattening cattle for ex- 25 port. And there are a few sugar plantations. Its mountains furnish a variety of valuable woods, also some coffee and cacao. Its commerce is considerable. Population of the township, 9,914.

Patillas like Ponce and many of the coast towns of Porto Rico, is situated two or three miles inland, having a village at the Playa. Its commerce has never been large. The chief arti- cles for export are sugar cane, coffee, cattle, lumber. The township has a population of 10,553.

PiEDRAS is on the mountains. The chief products are coffee and corn, while there is also some sugar cane cultivated. Population of the township, 8,028.

Yabucoa is a pleasant attractive village. The chief products of the township are sugar and lumber. It has 2 centrals for sugar making, Popu- lation, 13,103.

Vieques is a small island to the east of Porto Rico. The principal town is Isabella II having about 500 inhabitants. The land is fertile. The most valuable product is sugar. All the common products of the country grow in abundance. The island has a population of 6,019.

CuLEBRA, an island to the northeast of Porto Rico is about 5 miles long by 3 in width. A colony from Porto Rico settled on it in 1880, and there are about 600 inhabitants. Its products are bananas, sweet potatoes, rice, corn, and vege- tables, which are readily sold on the neighboring island of St. Thomas. The island has one good department store, the property of D. Miguel Ramirez. This island suffers much from lack of water, being totally destitute of natural springs and streams A public spirited citizen spent his private fortune in building a good public cistern. SAN JUAN.
