Season Update
Fédération Internationale de Volleyball [email protected] Telephone +41.21.345.3535 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour/FIVB Open Final Update Lausanne, Switzerland, December 15, 2013 — The third double-gender and final FIVB Open event on the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball calendar was held this past week in Durban, South Africa. These supplemental events to the FIVB World Tour Grand Slams are spread throughout the world to help open the door for development of the sport. For the women, China’s Xinyi Xia/Chen Xue repeated their Open gold from Phuket defeating Chantal Laboureur/Julia Sude of Germany, 21-18 and 21-18 in 43 minutes. It was the second FIVB event title for the sixteen-year old Xia and the 17th for Chen Xue, who were playing just their third FIVB event together. Laboureur and Sude were each playing their first FIVB final four. In an all-Latvian final on the men’s side, recently crowned tour champions Aleksandrs Samoilovs/Janis Smedins rallied after losing the first set to defeat Martins Plavins/Aleksandrs Solovejs, 15-21, 21-17, and 15-10 in 51 minutes to win the gold. It was the pair’s third FIVB gold of 2013 as well as the third for Samoilovs and the fourth for Smedins. For Solovejs, it was his first final four after two previous 25th-place finishes. This marked the first time that Latvia captured both the gold and silver medals in an FIVB event. With the completion of the Durban Open, the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball Calendar has officially concluded.
