Chill Dara Heritage Week is coordinated by the Heritage Council and Local Authority Heritage Officers. It is supported by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. National Heritage Week is Ireland’s annual celebration of our built, natural and cultural heritage and is part of a European initiative to encourage people to take an interest in their local heritage. Many of the events in this guide have been organised by local community and heritage groups who have a passion for heritage which they wish to translate to the people of Kildare. In 2019 the theme of National Heritage Week is Pastimes-Past Times. During Heritage Week there is something for everyone to enjoy from open days at historic buildings to hands-on heritage fun for children; exhibitions, activities, talks, craft demonstrations, re-enactments, tours and much more. The aim of Heritage Week is to foster a greater understanding and awareness of our own local heritage. This listing of events has been compiled by the Kildare Heritage Officer, Kildare County Council. Most events listed here are free. Participants are advised to confirm details of events in advance. Some events require booking. Children are welcome to most events but young children should be accompanied by an adult. Please dress Suitable for suitably. Get out and enjoy Kildare’s wonderful heritage during Children national Heritage Week. The theme for Heritage Week in Ireland is ‘Pastimes- Past Times’. From 17- 25 August we encourage you to take a stroll through history and explore how our free time has evolved in often fascinating ways. Our pastimes today have been shaped by hundreds of years of storytelling, craft, sport and music. Heritage Week provides a great opportunity for local groups and organisations to showcase their own local heritage, of which they are justifiably proud. Heritage Week helps to raise awareness of built, natural and cultural heritage, encourages it’s preservation and seeks to foster a shared pride in our shared heritage. I must congratulate the individuals, heritage organizations, museums, heritage centres and community groups who have organized the fantastic array of heritage events contained in this event guide. The tremendous efforts, often on a voluntary basis, of these enthusiastic and committed people demonstrate that the protection of heritage is a shared responsibility which is taken very seriously by the people of County Kildare. The number of events organized during Heritage Week in County Kildare continues to grow year on year and I look forward to attending a number of them. I would like to wish everyone well in this year’s events and encourage the people of County Kildare to get out and explore Kildare heritage. Cllr.
