It occurred to me that they looked a bit similar. “What’s that?” asked Divya. She pointed at my fist. I passed my Pele’s tear to Divya. She felt the weight of it in her palm. The Lyman Hawaiian Earthquake Diary, 1833-1917 An amazing accomplishment of record-keeping covering the significant years before, during, and after the strongest earthquake in the history of Hawaii. The 84-year collection of earthquake information credits the perseverance and foresight of Sarah, Isabella, and Frederick Lyman. Recurrent volcanic activity and earthquakes in Hawaii instill among residents respect of the impact of these catastrophic events. Introduction: IVO was first proposed as a NASA Discovery mission in 2010, powered by the Advanced Sterling Radioisotope Generators (ASRGs) to provide a compact spacecraft that points and settles quickly [1]. The 2015 IVO uses advanced lightweight solar arrays and a 1-dimensional pivot to achieve similar observing flexibility during a set of fast (~18 km/s) flybys of Io. The John Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab (APL) leads mission implementation, with heritage from MESSENGER, New Horizons, and the Van Allen Probes. Io, one of four large Galilean moons of Jupiter, is the most geologically active body in the Solar System. The enormous volcanic eruptions, active tectonics, and high heat flow are like those of ancient terrestrial planets and present-day extrasolar planets. IVO uses Figure 1. This booklet provides such information for the residents of Hawaii so they may effectively deal with the special geologic hazards of the island. Identifying and evaluating possible geologic hazards is one of the principal roles of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and its Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. When USGS scientists recognize a potential hazard, such as an impend ing eruption, they notify the appropriate govern ment officials, who in turn are responsible for advising the public to evacuate certain areas or to take other actions to insure their safety. NOA EMMETT ALULI AND DAVIANNA POMAIKA'l MCGREGOR Mai Ke KaiMai Ke Ola, From The Ocean Comes Life: Hawaiian Customs, Uses, and Practices on Kaho'olawe Relating to the Surrounding Ocean PROLOGUE HALI'A ALOHA O 'ANAKALA/Loving Remembrance Uncle Harry Kunihi Mitchell (1919-1990) Born in Ke'anae, Hana, Maui, Uncle Harry Mitchell (fig. 1) was reared in traditional Hawaiian ways by his grandparents to whom he was hdnai (given to be raised). He was born under Id'au kulua, a moon of Hawaiian healers. He passed away under muku, a moonless night. His grandparents were of the papa kaula keahikuni class of kahuna (priests). They trained the young Harry in the arts of using Hawaiian medicines made from native plants and marine life for healing of illness and injuries and improving the overall health of Hawaiians. Beginning in 1986, Uncle Harry dedicated himself to treating the physical health of the Hawaiian people. He actively organized other traditional Hawaiian Id'au lapa'au (healers) locally and state- wide, and he conferred with traditional healers from other parts of the Pacific and the world. Doctor Noa Emmett Aluli is a practicing physician on Moloka'i. Davianna Pomaika'i McGregor is an Assistant Professor in the Ethnic Studies Program at the University of Hawai'i. Myths and Legends The Volcano Goddess n olden times, Pele the fire goddess longed for adventure, so she said farewell to her earth mother and sky father and set Isail in her canoe, with an egg under her arm. In that egg was her favourite sibling – her little sister, Hi’iaka, who was yet to be born. As Pele paddled across the ocean, she kept the egg warm until her sister finally hatched. “Welcome, little sister,” said Pele and she continued paddling. The ocean was so vast and the journey so long that, by the time Pele had reached land – the island of Hawaii – her sister was already a teenager. Pele pulled their canoe onto the warm sand and set off for Kilauea Mountain, where she dug a deep crater and filled it with fire, so that she and her sister could live in comfort. But Hi’iaka was the goddess of hula dancing, and she spent most of her time in the flower groves, dancing with her new friend, Hopoe. 40 Pele loved her volcano home, but she needed to protect it from jealous rival gods, so whenever she felt like exploring, she fell asleep and left her body as a spirit. In this form, she could quickly fly across the sea to visit other islands. One evening, the breeze carried the sound of joyful music across the ocean and Pele decided to see where it was coming from. She took on her spirit form and flew across the sea – a journey that would have taken many weeks by canoe. -
