Interviews fall through, promised art never arrives, computers act up – everything, it seems, that can go wrong does. This would be one ofE those issues. But, hey, you’re reading this, so it’s all worked out, right? After all, we’ve been doing this for better than 20 years now, and during that time we’ve learned that we can get through pretty much anything. Whatever it takes to bring you whatzup in northeast Indiana. It’s what we do. And so, here you are, checking out the area’s only arts and entertainment weekly, and within it you’re going to find more to see and do than you can possibly imag- ine. Steve Penhollow profiles those Southern rock legends in our cover story on page 4. Penhollow also has an interview with another legendary southerner, Charlie Daniels, also playing the Foellinger at the beginning of September, on page 7. On page 8 you’ll find Mark Hunter’s piece on Zion Lion, the Kalamazoo reggae sextet that closes out the Botanical Roots sum- mer concert series on September 2. It was still abiding by the rules of rock and roll but it was hijacked by dissonant or discordant sounds. Notable purveyors of noise-rock in the second half of the decade were Nice Strong Arm; Rat At Rat R, whose Rock & Roll Is Dead (dec 1984/feb 1985 - ? 1985) was prophetic; Agitpop (1), whose Back At The Plain Of Jars (? 1985 - ? 1986) was reminiscent of Half Japanese and Pianosaurus; Ritual Tension (1), whose I Live Here (? 1985 - ? 1986) was devoted to clownish non-linear Pere Ubu-esque "dances"; Gut Bank (1), who recorded an album of amateurish but highly creative noise-rock, Dark Ages (? 1986 - end 1986), and pioneered the "riot- grrrrls" movement. Robert Poss (a student of avantgarde composers Alvin Lucier, Phil Niblock and Rhys Chatham) led the triple-guitar attack of the Band Of Susans (13). The guitar tornadoes on the EP Blessing And Curse (aug 1986 - ??) and on the full-length Hope Against Hope (may/jun 1987 - ? 1988) gave rock'n'roll a new twist, fusing minimalistic repetition, psychedelic vocals and guitar noise.

Dinosaur, still without the Jr. Not hardcore anymore, but not yet anything else either. First live shows: fearsomely loud. First record, a fearsome mess: a raw miscellany thrown together from small-town ennui, the apathy of the middle classes, and all the things teenage boys are obsessed with.1987. Dinosaur Jr. A new record, Youre Living All Over Me, the result of a move into a college dorm, encounters with Sonic Youth in the big city, and a hell of a lot of practice. Searing guitar riffs smash into mountainous solos; gnarly pedal effects light up twisted song structures; tight punk drumfills wade through distorted bass sludge. Contradictions are everywhere, but with opposite poles forced together, a fixating spark is created - one that, pre-Nirvana, ignites the idea of how the alternative might also become the mainstream. All things, as this book explores through interviews and comment from the band and its friends, that make up the unique - and uniquely odd - story of a record that cares so little it cares a lot.
