Whenever you are baking, simmering, broiling, roasting or baking make sure to use the timer and conduct kitchen checks. 2. Keep the cooking area clean and free of easily combustible items like food packaging, drapes, towels, food wrappers and potholders. They should be kept at least 3 feet away from the oven, stove or other hot surface. 3. Avoid wearing loose clothes or ones with long sleeves while you are cooking Thanksgiving dinner. 4. It is preferable to keep children away from the cooking area, especially the younger ones. If at all they enter the kitchen or come near the cooking area they remain at least three feet away. 5. • Turkey Fryer Safety
Consider purchasing an Turkey Fryer outdoor turkey cooking appliance that does Safety not use oil. NFPA discourages the use of outdoor gas- fueled turkey fryers that cook the turkey , in hot oil. The use of turkey fryers can lead to devastating burns, other injuries and the destruction of property. The Dangers of Turkey Fryers KKK Hot oil may splash or spill during the cooking. Contact between hot oil and skin could result in serious injury. KKK A hot oil spill can happen with fryers designed for outdoor use using a stand. The fryer could tip over or collapse causing the hot oil to spill. Newer countertop units using a solid base appear to reduce this risk. NFPA does not believe the risks of either type of turkey fryer to be acceptable because of the large amount of hot oil involved and the speed and severity of burns. KKK In deep frying, oil is heated to temperatures of 350° Fahrenheit or more. Cooking oil is combustible. If it is heated above its cooking temperature, its vapors can ignite. KKK Propane-fired turkey fryers must be used outdoors. They are very popular for Thanksgiving. Many parts of the country may have rain or snow at this time of year. If rain or snow hits the hot cooking oil, the oil may splatter or turn to steam, leading to burns. KKK Turkeys must be completely thawed before placing in the fryer, because a partially Oil-less Fryers thawed turkey will cause the oil to splatter causing serious burns. NFPA urges those who prefer fried turkey to KKK The fryers use a lot of oil, about five gallons.

LOGFIRE LEDGER 298th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion VOLUME 1, ISSUE 9 NOVEMBER 30, 2011 On Thursday, November 24, 2011, the LOGFIRE Team hosted a Thanksgiving Day Run, aka, the ―Turkey Run‖. This event was a half marathon which consisted of 13.1 miles. Low temperatures and dreary skies threatened to put a damper on the affair. However, as soon as the runners took off from the starting line, the sun came out and during the run, a beautiful rainbow arched across the sky. Many thanks go out to the runners, coordinators, the Shindand USO, and all of the volunteers that helped to put this event together and make it a success. All of the proceeds from this event went to the Wounded Warrior Foundation. More photos on page 14. Photos by SFC Bonnie Hughes Page 2 LOGFIRE LEDGER LINES FROM LOGFIRE 06 The “LOGFIRE Pilgrimage” As the ―LOGFIRE‖ Team celebrates Thanksgiving, our thoughts gravitate to de- sires of being home and having a special dinner with family and loved ones. It becomes easy to fall captive to the temptation of depression on such special holi- days. However, as we take a step back and focus our attention solely on the meaning of the holiday, we can find many things to be thankful as we progress on our journey through Afghanistan.
