  • 10 Tips for a Safe Thanksgiving
10 Tips for a Safe Thanksgiving Thanksgiving is a great holiday and everyone looks forward to it as it brings family and friends together to share a great dinner together. However Thanksgiving is also associated with some health and fire hazards that can spoil the Thanksgiving fun. Here are 10 cooking safety tips for cooking Thanksgiving dinner without incident. 1. According to the US Fire Administration there are more than 4000 fires on Thanksgiving day alone. Therefore you must take adequate care to prevent one when cooking your Thanksgiving dinner. While grilling or frying you must remain in the kitchen and if you have to leave it for some reason then ask someone to be there and watch the food cooking inside. Whenever you are baking, simmering, broiling, roasting or baking make sure to use the timer and conduct kitchen checks. 2. Keep the cooking area clean and free of easily combustible items like food packaging, drapes, towels, food wrappers and potholders. They should be kept at least 3 feet away from the oven, stove or other hot surface. 3. Avoid wearing loose clothes or ones with long sleeves while you are cooking Thanksgiving dinner. 4. It is preferable to keep children away from the cooking area, especially the younger ones. If at all they enter the kitchen or come near the cooking area they remain at least three feet away. 5. NFPA discourages the use of outdoor gas-fueled turkey fryers that immerse the turkey in hot oil. These turkey fryers use a substantial quantity of cooking oil at high temperatures, and units currently available for home use pose a significant danger that hot oil will be released at some point during the cooking process.

Their leadership came from the religious congregations of Brownist English Dissenters who had fled the volatile political environment in the East Midlands of England for the relative calm and tolerance of Holland in the Netherlands. Concerned with losing their cultural identity, the group later arranged with English investors to establish a new colony in North America. The colony, established in 1620, became the second successful English settlement (after the founding of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607) and later the oldest continuously inhabited British settlement in what was to become the United States of America. The Pilgrims' story of seeking religious freedom has become a central theme of the history and culture of the United States. History Separatists in Scrooby The core of the group that would come to be known as the Pilgrims were brought together by a common belief in the ideas promoted by Richard Clyfton, a Brownist parson at All Saints' Parish Church in Babworth, Nottinghamshire, between 1586 and 1605.

Name _________________________________________ Date _________________ Period ___________ THE HSITORY OF THANKSGIVING http://www.history.com/topics/thanksgiving/history-of-thanksgiving/videos/the-mayflower Thanksgiving at Plymouth In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers—an assortment of religious separatists seeking a new home where they could freely practice their faith and other individuals lured by the promise of prosperity and land ownership in the New World. After a treacherous and uncomfortable crossing that lasted 66 days, they dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination at the mouth of the Hudson River. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village at Plymouth. Did You Know? Lobster, seal and swans were on the Pilgrims' menu. Throughout that first brutal winter, most of the colonists remained on board the ship, where they suffered from exposure, scurvy and outbreaks of contagious disease. Only half of the Mayflower’s original passengers and crew lived to see their first New England spring. In March, the remaining settlers moved ashore, where they received an astonishing visit from an Abenaki Indian who greeted them in English. Several days later, he returned with another Native American, Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe who had been kidnapped by an English sea captain and sold into slavery before escaping to London and returning to his homeland on an exploratory expedition. Squanto taught the Pilgrims, weakened by malnutrition and illness, how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants.
