She was built in Scotland in 1846 and sheathed with yellow metal” Upon arrival in Quebec City the ship was quarantined at Gros Isle for a medical inspection. From there the passengers were transferred to a river ship for transport to Montreal for those proceeding west and the remainder disembarked at the port of Quebec. Alexander arrived in Montreal where he boarded a 'river boat for the remainder of the journey. These shallow draft boats carried all the supplies for the journey west. Notes for DAVID PRATT: According to information from Isobel Dunn the grand-daughter of Isabella Dingwall, David and Isabella had 13 children. David and Isabella were married at 10 East Brighton Crescent, Portobello, Scotland where two of their children were born. David was working for the Railway at that time and as a result of an injury on the job he was unable to continue. From the information provided by living family members David and Isabella did not have any concrete plans when they went to Australia. During the early years David purchased a horse and wagon and sold firewood to the people in Mackay. He eventually started a dairy farm and became very successful. Mr. David Pratt. As written in the Mercury. Mr. David Pratt, of Juliet-street, hale and hearty, is looking forward with keen anticipation to the celebration of his 90th birthday on Friday, May 25. Mr. Pratt properly is one of the best known and highly respected citizens of Mackay and district, and particularly so in bowling circles ,in which annual competitions are held for the Pratt Diamond Wedding Cup. This was originally known as the Golden Wedding Cup, but in the succession of years was altered to the present designation. Mr. Pratt always makes a point of being present when the final of the trophy is decided on the green.

Owing to an accident in his youth when working on the Scottish railways, Mr. Pratt suffers at times from the aftermath of injured legs but he still drives his own car as occasion requires. This injury was the cause of his having to discontinue a few years ago the game of bowls of which he was very fond. He was an early member of the Mackay Bowling club, but soon after the City Club was inaugurated transferred his membership to it.

Early Days Recalled. In a brief sketch of his early life given to a “Mercury” representive, he said his parents had a very hard struggle in King’s Kettle, County of Scotland, where he was born. His father died when Mr. Pratt was only two years old. Times then became very hard, particularly after he lost his mother, but they weathered the storm.

Mr. Pratt said his schooldays were very brief, but he recalls the jubilation and festivities associated with the wedding of King Edward V11. He was then a lad of about 6 years. There was a big bonfire and the foundation stone of Arthur’s Seat was laid amidst popular acclaim. Mr Pratt stated that it was at that festive occasion he first tasted meat. Farmers Boy. Upon leaving school at the age of about 10 or 11 he went to work on a farm doing what was known as “rodding wheat,” and following the harvesters earning 7 pence a day at that occupation. He continued farming for some years and became thoroughly acquainted with all its phases.

When he was 19 years of age Mr. Pratt travelled to Edinburgh, but did not get on too well in that city. He was there at the time of the Duke of Edinburgh’s wedding, and participated in the rejoicings of that occasion. He later found work on the Leith docks and subsequently on the railways, where he remained for 10 years, raising to the status of guard. It was then that he met with an accident to both legs, causing periodical trouble. The office gave him an office position, when it was suggested by some friends that he should go to Queensland. In the meantime he married Miss I. Dingwall of Evertun, Ross-Shire, and sailed for Queensland, from Glasgow, in the Hannah Landells, on June 6, 1883, reaching Mackay on September 11th. Rural Ventures. Mr. Pratt said that Mackay was not much to boast about at that time. He lost his eldest girl, Johanna, soon after. He managed to secure a house near the Town Common with about four acres of land, where he commenced dairy farming, between times carting wood and doing odd jobs. His venture prospered by dint of hard work. This he later sold for 1000 pound and purchased another block of five acres where dairying was continued with a milk run. This venture was continued for 17 or 18 years. Growing cane on a block adjacent to the Town Common was another venture and in 1896 he purchased what was known as the Homebush Terminus near Bakers Creek. He grew cane and carted for Homebush Mill. Later McLennon’s property of 2000 acres was purchased and a large cane crop was harvested in 1908. The venture again was a success due to hard work and commonsense methods.

Mr. Pratt visited his homeland in 1812 but his wife did not accompany him. He only remained for 6 months and did not experience a winter there, Mrs. Pratt died about 4 years ago at the ripe age of 84 years.

9 Slight Indisposition. While at Eungella Range recently Mr. Pratt suffered from an attack of gastritis which left him in a somewhat weakened condition, but at present he is in good health.
