www.uiwcardinals.com 6 UIW Tennis & Golf 2015-16 Head Coaches Devin Wilke has been involved with the UIW tennis program since 1999. He was a player for four years, followed by two years as a graduate assistant, nine years as an assistant coach and finally in 2014-15 he took over as the head women’s coach.

As an assistant with the women’s program, Wilke helped them to three conference titles and four appearances in the NCAA Division II tournament. In his first year after taking over for long-time head coach John Newman, the team struggled to a 2-21 record.

Wilke played four years of tennis at Incarnate Word. In competition, he posted a ca- reer mark of 41-39 in doubles play and he was 39-25 in singles. He is ranked in the top five all-time in both categories.

In his four years, the Cardinals won two Heartland Conference titles, played in two NCAA Division II regional tournaments and in 2002 advanced to the National Tournament. That spring, 2002, he was named All-Heart- land Conference.

A product of San Antonio’s Roosevelt High School, Wilke earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management in the spring of 2003. Twice he was Verizon Academic All-District and each year he was on the Heartland Presi- dent’s Honor Roll as he maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.80.

Twice he was a finalist for the UIW Student-Athlete of the Year, and he was an annual member of the Incarnate Word Dean’s List.

Pierce Brandan joined the UIW tennis coaching staff in 2011-12 and took over as the men’s head coach in 2014-15. Brandan understands the ins and outs of the program after working for and playing under long-time UIW head coach John Newman.

As an assistant coach at the NCAA Division II level, the men’s teams were ranked in his first two years. The move to Division I has been tougher, but Brandan is slowly making headway in the Southland Conference.

In his first season as head coach, Brandan had to deal with injuries to a number of key players. One player who stayed healthy was senior Leo Ivic who was the top player on the team. He posted a 15-14 singles record and earned second team all-Southland Conference honors and was on the all-Academic first team for a second straight year. The team finished the year with a 5-16 record and 0-5 mark in the conference.

A native of Georgetown, Texas, Brandan played four years of tennis with the Cardinals before receiving his bachelor’s degree in biology in 2011. He compiled a 9-11 singles record and 14-15 doubles record.

In the classroom as an undergraduate he was a member of the Pre-Med Society and back in 2009 he was rec- ognized with placement on the Heartland Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
